Chapter 27

Robinson abruptly turned on his heel and stormed away. Jillian and the Piper watched him go.

"Why does he seem so upset?" Jillian asked.

Ben coughed awkwardly. "William deosn't have the best relationship with his father. Let's leave it at that." He looked over her shoulder. "I think more of your friends are here to see you." He quickly scooted off as well.

Jillian spun around and was suddenly engulfed by the crew of the Jolly Roger. They surrounded her, all talking at once. Sparky slapped her on the back, "Tried to pull a fast one on us at the tavern, huh?"

Boulder shook her hand and Rosie even gave her a rare smile. Eye-Eye hung back a bit, looking ashamed. "Sorry," he mumbled. Jillian pushed through the others and gave him a hug. She felt him stiffen then relax.

"Its okay, she said. Then someone ran up to her and wrapped herself around her wiast in a crushing grip. "Goose!" How could she have forgotten the kids they had rescued?

"We found you!" Goose laughed. "Can I ride on your back?" Jillian laughed in relief. Despire being left with pirates, the girl seemed well-cared for. Her face and hair were clean and her blue eyes sparkled.

Smalls came up next with Al trailing behind. "Good, you can watch them," the pint-sized pirate said. "They're getting on my nerves." Jillian could only laugh. She didn't realize how much she had missed everybody. It dawned on her that they really did care about her after all.

"Where's Robinson?" Eye-Eye asked. "We're supposed to be leaving now."

She didn't know where to start. "Umm...he walked off."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Eye-Eye turned to the rest of the pirates. "Men!" he called. "We need to find our captain."

Jillian put a hand on his shoulder. "I think he needs some time by himsel-."

"Fan out!"

It was night before Jillian found Robinson. She was walking past a tent towards the campfire, when she heard voices.

"...understand why you're acting like this, William."

"I think you do, Ben."

It was the Piper and Robinson speaking in hushed voices. Jillian was about to enter when Ben said, "I thought after all this time, you'd feel differently. Why won't you talk to Robin Hood?"

There was en edge to his voice. "Why should I? He never cared for me. I was only a burden to him. He never wanted me-."

"That's not true," the Piper said in a low tone. "He cared for you a lot. You should have seen him when you left, brother."

It was only until then, standing in the damp grass outside the tent, when Jillian realized that both Ben and Robinson had the same accent. In fact, all the Merry Men did. It was so obvious that the pirate captain had grown up here. How could she have missed it before? It was also strange to learn that Robinson had once had a life here, growing up in this forest. She had always imagined him as she had known him, a grumpy pirate. It seemed that Robinson wanted to keep it that way.

"Don't call me that!" Robinson snapped. There was a pause as he tried to collect himself. "We may have been once considered to be brothers but not anymore."

"Someone's been taking thespian lessons," the other said dryly. "I didn't know you could be so dramatic."

Robinson ignored the sarcasm. "The only reason I'm staying is because Jillian needs you for something. Once she gets it, we're out of here and that's that!"

There was a long silence. Then Ben demanded roughly, "Do you think I'm an idiot?"

Jillian's head snapped up in surprise. This was completely out of behavior. Robinson seemed to think so too. "What's your problem?"

"I'm the one with a problem!? Who's the one who ran off when they were thirteen? Who's the one who became a pirate and had wanted posters slapped all over the world? Those darn papers were the only way we knew you were even alive-."

"SHUT UP!" Robinson roared. "Just shut up!" There was the sound of metal as he drew his sword. Jillian gasped, her heart beaating so hard it was sure to burst out of her chest. She twitched her fingers, ready to rush in there and stop him with her magic.

"Are you going to stab me?" Ben suddenly sounded tired, like he aged twenty years.

"Perhaps."

"Nah, you won't. You know why?" The Piper didn't wait for an answer. "Its because there's a tiny part of you that still cares. You think I didn't catch that cute little name you call yourself these days? Robinson. Son-of-Robin. You must really think I'm an idiot."

"Whatever," the pirate mumbled.

This one word seemed to speak thousands as Ben let out a laugh. "You see? You still care in that icy heart of yours and that's good enough for me. Now just go. You obviously need some time with your crew. Out."

As Robinson headed for the entrance to the tent, Jillian froze for a second, eyes wide open. She barely had anytime to process that she just heard before she turned and bolted for the campfire. Reaching the pirates of the Jolly Roger, she squeezed between Sparky and Rosie. Ignoring their bewildered looks, she tried to calm her breathing and look normal.

A few minutes later, Robinson came storming over. He forcefully wedged himself on the too-small log next to Jillian, causing all the pirates to shift and smash together.

"Where have you been?" Sparky asked as Rosie tumbled off the edge and landed on the ground in a heap. "You missed the sing-along!"

Robinson grunted, not looking sorry in the slightest. "Not important." He quickly changed the subject and turned to Jillian. "What's the next step, Jill?"

Jillian flushed as he stared at her. She felt terribly guilty for eavesdropping on his private conversation. "Umm, I-I need to talk to the Piper about my brother." She tried to ignore his scoff at the title. "He took the children from Brooks so he has to know where they are now."

Robinson sighed, clearly annoyed at having to ask for more help from the Merry Men. "Fine. But do you really think your brother is there?"

"Yes, I do," Jillian said. A flicker of doubt flashed through her and she stared at the flickering flames intently. "He has to be."

"And what's your plan then? Will you just magically convince him to come with us?" Robinson groaned as Jillian laughed. "That was poor wording."

"Maybe, but yes, I think proof of magic will convince him enough."

Robinson tossed a twig into the fire. "You're pretty confident in someone you've never met."

"He's family," she pointed out. She reddedned at know naive that sounded. She had never had a family. How could she know what it was like?

"Well, family can be disappointing sometimes." The fire crackled in the awkward silence. The other pirates continued to pretended that they weren't listening.

"You're talking about your father, right?" Jillian pressed. Before she could stop herself, she continued, "You should try talking to him. I know your childhood was rough but-."

"You don't know anything!" Robinson suddenly shouted, jumping up from the log. "Who's telling her things?" He scanned the surrounding faces with a wild, scary look in his eye. Jillian saw Eye-Eye hide behind Sparky, even though he was innocent.

Jillian stared at her lap, her breath quick and rapid. She was so terrified, she felt she would throw up. The fire reflecting in his eyes was unnerving. Robinson waited for a moment and said, "Well whoever it was should keep their mouth shut! We're only here for one night, then we're gone! Got it?"

The pirates nodded meekly. Goose and Al peeked out from behind Boulder and Robinson spun on his heel to leave-and ran straight into Robin Hood. All the air went out of Jillian's lungs as Robinson was face-to-face with his father for the first time since they arrived. No one spoke, moved, or breathed.

Robin Hood cleared his throat uncomfortably. He opened his mouth to speak, but the pirate brushed him off with an angry look and left.
