Chapter 7
"This is it," Alex said. "How do you propose we get inside?" She looked up at the large grey building standing in the dull light of the parking lot. She and Kara were standing behind a parked car, hidden from the light. There were approximately twenty vehicles scatted about the space.
But Kara didn't respond. her focus was on the entrance. Finding a way inside the Department of Extra-Normal Operations would be tricky, but she had a plan.
Kara had just eavesdropped on a conversation that was being had on the inside between two low-level employees. She smiled to herself and ran out from behind the car, leaving Alex following after her in a fit of her own confusion. "What are you doing, Kara? We're gonna get caught!"
Kara smiled. "No, we're not. You just need to play along, and we'll be fine." Kara reached the panel by the door and pressed the call button.
"That's your plan?" Alex scoffed. "They're not going to just let us in."
Kara remained optimistic and smiled when a professional, though masculine, voice spoke to them through the speaker. "Yes? Who is it?"
Kara inched closer to the speaker and spoke clearly. "Hi, we're looking for Jeremiah Danvers... Can you tell him it's his daughters, Alex and Kara?"
"Jeremiah Danvers isn't in right now. He's on a mission."
Alex pulled a face at Kara as if to say, 'I told you so.' But that did not derail Kara in the slightest.
"Oh, that's okay," she continued into the speaker. "We can come in and wait. He said earlier that I could check in on my friend Jaime. He might've left a message or something about it. Please... I really don't want to wait outside... it's scary out here."
Alex shook her head as the voice on the speaker hesitated. "Fine, I'll let you in. The boss is going to meet you. Just mind yourselves."
The connection to the speaker was cut off and Alex was stumped. "Did you use your hearing again?" Alex asked of Kara.
Kara smirked even wider and the doors opened. Standing before them was a dark-skinned man dressed in a neat black suit. He gestured to the girls. "Alex and Kara Danvers?"
They nodded, forcing the man to sigh. "I'll take you to see your friend. But you will need to do as I say."
"Hey, you're my father's boss... aren't you?" Alex asked. "Hank Henshaw?"
The agent stared sternly at Alex but did not respond. Instead, he turned on his feet and led them into the facility.

After a brief ten-minute tour of the D.E.O, Agent Henshaw led the girls just outside a patient room, where the door had been pulled shut. He looked down at Alex. "Mr Reyes is stable but we need him to tell us what happened. I'll need you to get the information and report it back to me... It's in his best interest."
"What about Crystal?" Kara asked, concerned about what might've happened to her.
"I'm sorry but that's classified... Wait, you were the one who saw what happened, weren't you?"
Kara nodded but instantly regretted admitting it. Agent Hank Henshaw addressed her with authority. "Miss Danvers, you will accompany me. I still don't quite understand it myself."
Kara looked to Alex for assistance, which she instantly gave. "I don't actually know Jaime myself. ot might be easier if Kara came in with me."
Hank grumbled but reluctantly accepted. "alright, but I'll be outside. I'll also give your father a call."
Kara and Alex made their way into the room, where Jaime was searching in his belongings frantically. They closed the door with a soft click, forcing Jaime to stop and turn to face them. "Where did you put it?" he shouted, taking them both by surprise. "You don't understand what it can do!" The boy was of Hispanic descent with a short crop of hair and stood approximately five foot ten in height.
As Alex tried to hold her back, Kara shrugged free from Alex's clasp and stepped toward Jaime. She spoke in a low whisper. "I... I don't understand. We didn't take anything. What are you looking for? We can help you find it."
Jaime pursed his lips together, clearly realizing that he was in the company of friends. "Who are you?" he asked.
"She's the girl who saved you." Alex said, in Kara's defense. "She's Kara and I'm Alex. What were you looking for?"
"Sorry, I shouldn't have snapped at you like that. My name's Jaime. Jaime Reyes. I think those guys stole something that belongs to me. It looks like a bug... a scarab... I really need to get it back... Please. I can't leave here without it." His dark eyes were pleading with them.
Kara thought about Crystal. Where was she? What was this thing that Jaime was looking for? Everything had to be connected and she was determined to find out what the answers. Kara nodded adamantly and brought her finger to her lips, knowing that Hank Henshaw was still standing in earshot outside the door.
She smiled at Jaime, her eyes telling him that she would help him get back his scarab, but she lied out loud. "No, sorry. I can't help you." It was a lie for the soul purpose of deterring Hank Henshaw from their plan. Their plan of uncovering the truths of the D.E.O.
