Chapter 8

Alex stepped out of Jaime's patient room to find Agent Hank Henshaw still waiting out in the hallway. He looked into the room to see both Kara and Jaime standing only a few feet behind her. "If you don't mind, MR Henshaw, I'll tell you everything that Jaime and my sister have both confessed," Alex said confidently.

The expressions on both Kara's and Jaime's faces turned ice cold. "How could you, Alex?" Kara gasped.

Alex shook her head and evaded eye contact with them both, keeping her attention on Hank Henshaw alone.

The agent seemed pleased. "They told you everything?"

Alex nodded, "Yeah... but, I don't know if you'll believe me... some of it was rather far-fetched."

Hank smiled. "I've seen so many things since the events on Smallville, you'll be surprised at what I'll believe."

Jaime stormed toward Alex. "No, don't do this, Alex! You don't understand what he's going to do with that information! He's going to use it to..."

Kara pulled Jaime back. "There's nothing we can do, Jaime. My sister Alex is stubborn... There's no changing her mind."

Alex gave a bittersweet smile in their direction and then turned back to Hank. "Look, Hank... The thing is, what they told me... Well, you won't need them any longer. You have what you need... so I'm begging you, to let them go free."

Hank pulled a face that looked as if he were weighing up his options. Finally, he agreed. "We'll see them out... But Danvers, you can stay."

"Great, I always wanted to see where my father worked... you said he was on a mission?"

Hank shook his head, he was not going to give her any further details. He led them toward the entrance and used his scanner to open the doors. Kara attempted to bargain with Alex. "Please, don't do this... you're my sister, remember? Please don't!"

Alex refused to look her in the eye. "We're foster sisters, that's all. I owe you nothing, Kara."

Kara slunk backward at her words, and Jaime shook his head solemnly. Hank's smile was wider than before. "You're doing a good thing, Alex. Sometimes the right thing is also the hardest thing... Kara, Jaime? you're both free to leave." He ushered them out the building and the doors closed instantly.

Kara and Jaime were left standing in the cold parking lot while Alex was still inside. "Why would she do that?" Jaime huffed.

"It's Alex," Kara replied. "I'm sure she had her reasons."

"Yeah, I get that... but she knew the plan... you were to distract him while we were to carry out the other part of the plan. How do we know we can trust her... How do I even know I can trust you?" Jaime shook his head softly. "Dammit! I'm screwed!"

Kara knew that Alex's plan was to ensure that Kara remained safe at all costs... She was sacrificing herself for Kara, and Kara wouldn't let anything happen to Alex. She removed her gaze from the door and stared hard at Jaime. "I saved you back at school. You were almost dead."

"Yeah, and I wound up here... besides, how did you save me? How did you get past Crystal? You're just a regular girl!"

Kara opened her mouth ready to speak, but thanks to her magnified hearing she could hear Alex speaking with Hank. "Level 2? Why are we heading to level 2, MR Henshaw?"

Kara sighed and mumbled under her breath. "They're heading up to the second level... I need to find a way to get up there."

"Level 2?" Jaime asked, "how do you know that?"

Kara looked up. "Jaime, I need you to stay here... I'll be back in a minute. I'll get the door opened."

"Wait, what?"

Without leaving him with an explanation, Kara ran around the side of the building at regular speed, until she was out of Jaime's sight. She glanced around, she was standing in between the building and the fence. She looked up at a window, two stories high and flew upward. Once she had reached the window, she found that it was locked. Just a small obstacle. She peered into the dark room, there was nobody in sight. Nobody to see her use her powers.

With her laser vision, Kara burned a large hole into the glass, large enough for her to crawl through. She pressed on the glass and held the edges in her hands, so it wouldn't drop to the ground and smash. Her feet hit the tiled floor. She had made it into the dark room.

She leaned the sheet of glass against the wall when something caught her eye in the corner of the room. A security camera. Someone had to be watching her. Kara instantly flew toward it, doing her best to stay out of sight. From the corner of the room, out of the lens's view, she breathed a stream of iced, blurring the lens with a thick layer of frost.

She hadn't been caught yet, but she would need to move fast to ensure that matters stayed that way. Her next plan was to find a way to let Jaime in. That plan came in the form of a security guard streaming a video on his phone, in the next room. The security guard had left his ID badge on the table beside him.

Without the man even noticing, Kara swiped his ID badge and flew as fast as she could to the entrance. She scanned the badge and the doors opened revealing a rather surprised Jaime standing on the other side.

"How did you...?" he stammered.

Kara beamed excitedly. "You wanted to know if you can trust me... I just proved it to you. Now, let's go before we get caught."

Jaime stepped into the facility and looked around as the doors closed instantly behind him. "So you manage to slip in here easily," he said. "But do you know how dangerous this could be?"

Kara smirked. "Oh, I'm sure I'll be fine... Now, let's go... we're wasting time and by the sound of it, Alex is struggling to keep Hank occupied."

Keeping to the shadows, Kara and Jaime made their way through the D.E.O's facility. They passed many rooms, but while Kara was determined to find where they were holding Crystal, Jaime searched tirelessly for the item he called the scarab.

Then while Kara was listening into Hank and Alex's conversation, she heard a third voice that derailed their plan entirely. Jeremiah was reporting back to Hank Henshaw, only to find his daughter communing with the man.

Alex, Hank Henshaw, and Jeremiah Danvers stood in the well-lit office of Agent Henshaw. "Alex, what are you doing here? Where's Kara?" Jeremiah asked sternly.

Alex shuffled nervously. She hadn't yet given up any information that might expose Kara or even Jaime for that matter but now she might need to. She willed an explanation to come, but Jeremiah turned his glare on Hank. "Whatever my girls have done, leave them out of this. I will take them home immediately, but I have an important update on the mission."

Hank studied Alex and then Jeremiah curiously but said nothing.

"Please, Hank... it's about the scarab!" Jeremiah said boldly.

This had Agent Henshaw's undivided attention. "Your other daughter left with her friend an hour ago. Take your daughter home and then report back immediately, Danvers."

Alex bit down on her lip nervously, knowing that Kara and Jaime were still inside the facility. She only prayed that Kara had heard every part of this conversation, for the sake of her own safety.
