Chapter 9
EMMA POINT OF VIEW
It takes a step closer, coming into the torch light. I turn to my machine on my wrist hoping it works. Two words pops up:warming up. It needs to 'warm up'?! What kind of machine is this? I need you now!
I look over at Jake his eyes gleaming with taking on this challenge. Is he seeing what I'm seeing? It's a wolf nine feet tall! He looks at me not saying anything, but his eyes says it all. He going to do something.
He's going to do something probably stupid, which would probably put us more in danger, but let's see what he got.
He throws the torch light at the wolf. "Run!" Is all he says. I'm wrong that wasn't stupid that was suicidal! "Jake! Are you trying to get us killed!" I screamed as we're running for our lives. "If we stayed there any longer we would have been killed anyway." He didn't shout, but said it irritated. He's irritated?! Thanks to him we have a target on our backs.
I feel rough fur hit my side so hard I was sent flying twenty feet away from where I was, back hitting a tree. "Emma!" Jacob shouted, but I'm focusing on the wolf that's slowly walking towards me. I slowly get up, and hold out my sword. My back is killing me. Jake comes from behind, and puts the torch light on the wolf's fur. It did nothing, but have him as its next target.
Think what can I do? If this machine doesn't start up any time soon Jake is going to ask why I didn't use my powers. Well technically he's not using his either.
Focus at one thing at a time like not dying!
Jake's on the ground the wolf towering over him. I run behind the wolf and force the sword into the wolf's mane. It's backs away howling. Jake immediately gets up. "Thanks, but that's not going to hold it for long...can I fly us out?" He doesn't even wait for me to respond he wraps his arms around me, and takes off. I grip onto his shirt tightly.
He notices the tension. Yeah, I hate heights! We're so above the ground...don't look down!
"Hey, it's okay." We both hear a whooshing sound, Jake turns us around to be faced with the wolf. Great, it can fly.
Is it just me or is it that every single time he's say we're going to be fine that wolf pops up?
"Jake, I need to get my sword..."
"Oh, you want me to go ask it? I'm sure it won't mind giving it back to you." Jake responds sarcastically. He's right I do sound completely nuts, but my father always says "go with your instincts."
"Jake, I know it sounds ridiculous, but your just going to have to trust me." He keeps moving forward showing no sign of going to get my sword. I need it, and I can't fly.
I hear a sigh, but he turns us around. Now we're directly below the wolf. He's in the wolf's blind spot if it has one...I hope so.
"Fine, what's the plan?" He asks. We keep flying directly under the wolf, but now it's starting to notice we're no longer in front of him. "We don't have time right now just do it."
He still hestitates not liking how I didn't tell him the plan. All a sudden the wolf stops flying making Jake keep flying almost past the wolf, luckily he stopped in time. The wolf starts sniffing the air trying to sniff us out. "Do you trust me?" I asked. He nods, and as quick as ever we were over the wolf not under it. Man, he flies fast.
No time to waste, I let go of Jake, and fall onto the wolf's tail. Should have asked Jake to take me closer. "Emma!" I pull myself up, and the wolf immediately starts howling. Jake moves to the front of the wolf to distract it. "Jacob no! I need you back here!" The wolf lifts up its paw, and scratches Jacob arm it's hard to see how bad it is, but he quickly moves back to me. I grab my sword, but the wolf goes haywire.
I find myself hanging on one leg it's claw digging into my wrist.
"Emma..."
"Grab this." I interjected tossing the sword to him, but luckily he has fast reflexes and caught it. I pull myself up, while the wolf still going haywire trying to shake me off.
"Jake, toss it." He looks uncertain, but does it...I think he knows what I'm doing. I walk slowly up towards the head gripping the fur. Basically crawling. The howls hurts my ears, and my arm burns, but I was able to walk up to the top. I stab the wolf's head with the sword. The wolf's roars in the night, and starts falling towards the ground. I see Jake shouting at me, but I can't hear. I take the sword out, and put it back into the sheath ignoring the blood for the moment, why do I feel so dizzy?
I lose my balance, and start falling. I feel someone grab me.
"Em..." What did he say? Why is it getting darker?
JACOB POINT OF VIEW
She closes her eyes. "Emma?" She doesn't respond. I look at my arm covered with blood except it's not from mine arm. I need to get to land fast.
I look down towards the ground, and find a good looking spot by a lake where the moonlight's bright. We'll rest here.
I find sticks near by, and set up a bonfire. I go over to Emma, and set her down in front of the fire. Man, this has been a crazy day for the both of us...
but Emma was opened to me, and it just makes me feel awful how people feel that way towards her.
I move over to a nearby tree, and lean against it staring at Emma. That plan she had was crazy, but it saved us. Her father was right to choose her as one of the five chosen ones.
"Jacob?" I hear a whisper. "Emma. You okay?" I move to her, and immediately see her green eyes staring up into mine.
Wait, why does she have green eyes?! That's not a color in Xoruma...granted though they are beautiful.
Okay, I think today has officially knocked me out. I'm only saying that because I'm tired that's all.
"Yeah, just wanted to make sure you're okay the cut on your arm looks bad." She wanted to make sure I was okay? I wasn't the one who passed out from the loss of blood on her arm, and wrist.
"Trust me I'm fine I was more worried about you. You lost a lot of blood." She smiles weakly "I had worst."
EMMA POINT OF VIEW
I close my eyes taking a deep breath. Slowly I try to stand up taking a few tries, but I got it. "Emma, what are you doing?" He asked getting up as well.
What am I doing?
"Just needed to stand up, and stretch." I take a step forward tripping over a small rock, but Jake caught me before I fell. "Thanks, but I got it." I said shaking him off, and sitting back down. Yeah, I don't.
"Okay." He said a little worried, but didn't question anything. He sits down right next to me.
After a while of complete silence he breaks it. "So, why didn't you use your powers?" The question sort of caught me off guard. What do I say? I have no powers...he would know something is up.
"You don't need to use your powers for everything. Why didn't you use yours?" Technically he did use his powers to fly us out of there, but why didn't he use his fire powers?
"As much as you thought it was suicidal I threw the fire to see if it would effect the wolf in some way, but obviously it didn't so I didn't find any use in using my powers. I only have fire powers, and the ability to fly." He sounded disappointed. Why? He should be happy to have powers.
"What power were you hoping for?" I asked. He looked up at me, then back down to the grass he was playing with. "Healing powers. My mother had healing powers, and every time I had a injury or even the tiniest of scratches she would heal it. I don't know why, but I thought it would be cool if I had inherited that power as well. Guess not."
For a moment no one talked. I was thinking about what it must be like to have powers, and Jake was thinking who knows what because I can't read minds, but sometimes I feel like he can read mine. I guess I can be predictable, but not all the time.
"So..." He starts debating on something. "How did your father exactly adopt you? What happened?" I don't know if I'm ready to tell him the truth, yet some part of me feels like I can.
Just do the cover story the cover story my father created.
"The story I'm about to tell you Jacob is a big secret not that many people know. Granted my father did have to tell all the heroes about me when I was a baby, but this is between you, and me in this world. Okay?" I look over to him. He gives a small smile, and nods his head. "Promise."
Should I just tell him the real story? No, I can't it, may put father in danger even though he's on another planet...it may put me in danger.
Cover story it is.
"I'm from Earth. My father one day had to check on the heroes department to see if everything was okay because there was a recent attack. So he went, and everything was okay. As he was walking back to his shuttle with his assistant they were talking about something, and that's when he heard a baby crying. Me. He looks around, but all he sees is an abandon house or shack because it was a little smaller than a house burnt to the ground. Father decided to look through the rumble. He looked for hours, but he didn't find me. At last he has only one place of rumble to look through that sort of made an arch. The rumble didn't fall on me just my parents. My father found me there, and ever since then I was adopted, joined the heroes." I can't even look at Jacob.
Why do I feel so bad about lying to him?
If people knew the truth they would try to kill me, and sadly so would he. No, it's just our secret, father and I.
I feel a hand wrap around mine. I look at the ground not looking at him or our hands. I can't look at him.
"I'm glad you told me. I'm sorry that happened to you that must've been hard to go through." You don't even know the story.
I get up, and walk to the opposite side of the bonfire. "I'm going to sleep you should too. Tomorrow going to be a long day." Try a long night.
"You go ahead, I'll keep watch." Snap, he's right we should keep watch, and try to avoid a new wolf diaster or whatever monster is there. "No, I'll keep first watch." I said already moving towards a tree on the opposite side of where Jacob is. As long as one of us is asleep I'm good, though if I'm asleep I wouldn't be able to see him, but if he goes to sleep I can just force myself not to look at him see win win for me.
Why do I feel so guilty? I'm doing this for father's and my safety, but why do I feel like I should have told him the truth? Maybe because he did the same for me.
"We could both take the first shift." I jump up. I look down at where I was sitting, then shifting my eyes to where Jacob was currently sitting. When did he move? "Fine, I'll watch from over there." I said slightly irritated. Wasn't that my spot to begin with? Your the one who wants to move.
I look out into the woods my back facing Jacob, though my back facing towards him I know he's still staring at me probably wondering why I'm acting so weird, and to be honest I don't know why I'm acting so weird.
My eyes start to close. For some unknown reason I look over to Jacob to see if he's sleeping, but his eyes find mine. Okay, he wins. He can take first shift.
I move closer to the bonfire. "You can take first shift when you feel tired wake me up." I didn't look at him. Get yourself together Emma! He's your partner, and you told him the cover story to protect you and your father. That's not a crime!
Why do I feel like it is then?
I start to close my eyes, but now I'm no longer tired. I force myself to go to sleep anyway.
..........
I wake up from the pain in my arm. My eyes looking over at Jacob his eyes slowly closing, then wide open. I watch him do this a few times. Let's switch.
I walk over to Jacob who's fell asleep. For a moment I just stayed there looking down at him. Should I wake him up so he could move closer to the fire? It's cold in these woods, but yet again maybe he doesn't feel it. "Everything okay Emma?" The question caught me off guard mainly because his eyes are still closed. Maybe if I don't say anything he won't know I'm here.
He's sleeping though so how does he know I'm here?
I hear a heavy sigh before he opens his eyes. He pats next to him gesturing me to sit there. Hesitantly, I sit there.
"Tell me what's wrong." I don't even know what's wrong, I just feel bad for lying especially since he told me about his past trufully.
How do you even know he's not lying?
I don't know, but I know he's not.
"You don't...no its nothing, just forget about it, good night." I start sitting up straighter to stand up, but his hand covers mine stopping me. I look over at him as he looks back at me.
He looks like he hasn't slept in days, yet his eyes still sparkle like he's...I don't know I'm not used to seeing that look in people eyes, never around me anyway.
"It's okay Emma. You can trust me." I slowly nod. I can trust him...I just don't know why this is bothering me so much. I'll just tell him the truth later...
What if he wouldn't want to be near me? What if my secret's out, and he joins the angry mob trying to kill me? If I tell him the truth he'll never trust me again.
"I just thought at this point you would've left me now knowing why I'm so different." A look of surprise comes across both of our faces. I didn't know that's what I was going to say, but now that I did I realized it's true. I thought he would've left me. "I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me."
