Chapter 5

Ezra curled further in on himself as the other children around him continued to sob and cry loudly for their parents.

Two-year-old Ezra did not sob, but tears still pricked his eyes and fell down his cheeks as he saw the flashes of red energy constantly before his little blue eyes and heard the voices of his parents cry out for a final time...

"Come on Ezra, hurry," whispered his father sharply as he pulled him along the alleyway. Curfew had already sounded and they were not supposed to be out on the streets.

The trio hurried home, away from the burning and screaming a few streets away where the small Church of the Force that they attended was burned to the ground and all the worshipers present summarily executed by the Empire.

Ezra was confused; this wasn't how their nights would go. They were supposed to be at the Church, not going home now. Ezra pondered this as he struggled to keep up with his parents long strides.

Shortly afterwards, they reached their home and his father made sure that they were both safe once they entered.

A funny feeling stayed with him even as he surveyed the blackness of the streets around them and found nothing as his mother pulled him towards his room and hurriedly whispered to gather his things.

Ezra didn't understand, but still complied as he got his stuffed Loth-Cat toy and some clothes into a bag at his mothers orders. She bundled him up in warmer clothes and wrapped him up in an extra blanket before telling him to wait on his bed.

Ezra complied as he held his toy close and pulled the edges of the blanket closer. Something was very wrong, he just knew it.

His mother returned rugged up shortly afterwards, a bag slung in her back as she crouched in front of him and produced two pendants. One was a necklace, decorated with the old symbol of the Jedi disguised as an Imperial insignia. The other was a bracelet with the same pendant.

His mother quickly put them on as he looked at them before his father appeared and said, "We need to go."

His mother nodded and let his father pick him up as Ezra held on tightly. He didn't realise that that would be the last time he saw his home and his parents alive again.

In the blur of events that followed, the flashes of red energy slicing through bodies, the yelling and screaming that echoed through his ears, and the dark masks of his parents assailants and his kidnapers were the only things seared into his brain.

As Ezra relived his new nightmare from hell, he was taken away from his home-world along with other kidnapped children, all toddlers and infants like himself, to a place far away and, unknown to them, to begin their new lives in a cutthroat world as future potential Inquisitors...
