Peters POV
Inside, it's dead silent. I'd always be able to hear Clint's loud dad laugh from three floors above me, with just my regular hearing. Or Thor booming burps from all the soda he's been drinking. Tony has been trying to get him to eat healthier, and Thor agreed to it. He's actually been doing great, except for the fact he thinks diet soda helps you loose weight. Tony has given up already.
I lay my backpack on the table and pull out my phone. I press the power button a few times, but then I realize it's dead. I just throw it to the side and put my head into my arms.
I feel so dumb. I know I shouldn't. I know crying and breaking down is a normal thing. I feel like a baby, an annoying little baby who cries all day long for attention. Wade probably thinks I have problems. He might think I'm depressed. I don't want to be depressed. I don't want to be sad. I don't want to cry anymore.
Am I overthinking? Am I just overreacting? No. Yes. I don't know.
All my life everyone has known me as this happy cheerful kid. That's only cause I'm so good at hiding my emotions. It's not really because I was insecure or couldn't express them, it's more of the fact that no one cared.
Three days before my twelfth birthday, both my parents died from a plane accident. May and Ben helped a lot. When I came back to school I was ready to talk to people about my feelings. This one friend, Charles, didn't seem to care about how I was feeling. Whenever I'd mention how upset I was, people would just tell me to be happy. I soon realized no one cared about me. I stored my true emotions deep down in a bottle.
When Ben died, peoples reactions were different. I was fifteen, almost a whole year ago. I took one day off from school to go to his funeral. When people found out, I got all this attention I never wanted. I told everyone "I'm okay." and they believed me, even though I really wasn't. Ned cared though. So did MJ. They're the only ones I show my true self to. Well, not 100%.
Today, with Wade, I didn't even know what was happening. Everything I've kept tightly sealed in that bottle, suddenly spilled out. I'm glad I didn't start blabbering on about how much I hate living with the Avengers. Or how much I hate being Spider-Man. There are so many things in my life I hate, and I should be grateful for instead.
But instead my stubborn ass will get in the way and won't accept people's help or care. I hate how I'm like this.
"Peter? You awake, bud?" A firm hand shake my shoulder. I look up, it's much darker and there's pain in my back.
"Wha-" I mumble. It's Tony. He has a few cuts and bruises on his face. A sling on his right arm. I was going to get mad at him for ditching me, but I can't anymore. I just can't.
"I'm sorry no one came to get you.It was a last minute mission, there was no one I could call." I slowly nod and begin to stand up, but my legs go numb. I stumble into Tony and he catches me with his good arm.
"Woah, you good, Peter?" My arm grips him tightly as my legs tingle with pins and needles. I take a quick breath and nod again.
"Are you sure? You don't seem good. Pete, c'mon, lets sit down." We walk over to the couches and we sit next to each other, but he's facing me.
"You don't always need to be okay, Peter. Listen to me, you don't always need to keep this mask on, covering up your emotions." I look at him, he looks worried. Scared even. I want to tell him everything, but it'll scare him even more.
"Yeah, I know." My throat burns from holding in tears. I hate this feeling. I always get it. The smallest thing will happen and I'll feel the need to cry. I have to stop myself. I hate crying, I just hate it. A few times I've let myself cry, but it only lasts a minute.
"Are you sure? Be honest, are you okay?" I don't know what to say. Be honest? Lie? Be honest? Lie? Be honest? Lie? Be honest? Lie? Be honest? Lie? Be honest? Lie? Be honest-
"Peter?"
"I-I'm good, Tony." I force a smile but I can tell he isn't believing it.
"Let's get yourself to bed. You seem tired." We get up and my legs are still tingly from before. I walk unevenly, but Tony comes up to me and let's me grab onto him. Of course, I don't. I walk myself up to my room, alone for the rest of the night.
Tony Pov
"There's something going on with this kid. I know he's lost his aunt, and there should be no reason for him to not be upset, but he's acting different. He's not telling me anything, keeping all his secrets to himself. Does he not trust me?" I say to Natasha, through FaceTime.
She's in an hotel and looks tired. I don't know what time it is there. "Look, maybe get him to a therapist."
"Therapy? I don't think that's going to help." I scoff.
"Helped me. And you." Shes right, but also wrong.
"He's not open like we are. You think he'd trust a random doctor?" She tilts her head and just shrugs.
She takes a deep breath. We stay silent for a few seconds."Take him in for one appointment. If he likes it, keep going. If he doesn't, cancel. You gotta experiment with this."
"Yeah, I'll do that. Thank you. Get some rest, you seem tired." She smiles. I wish I could hug her right now.
"Can't." She gets up and open the patterned curtains to show a sunrise, "it's morning." She laughs a little and heads back to her phone.
"Alright, I'm gonna head to bed. Miss you."
"Miss you to." She blows a kiss, I do the same. I smile and hang up.
It's quiet. I take a deep breath, I hate the quiet. Everyone is either sleeping or showering. I need to shower. And sleep.
I trudge up three floors on the staircase. The elevator gets too boring. Plus I could use the workout.
I walk down the long hallway. I first pass Clint's room. I can hear quiet music playing and the shower running. Next is Thors. The only thing heard is his snores. Steve's room is after that, but we all know he's fast asleep by now. Natasha's room is empty. Peters room is next to hers. There's a dim light coming from the crack underneath. I probably should say goodnight, I mean, I am basically his dad.
I slowly open the door to find him laying on his bed, staring at his ceiling. He has white Christmas lights hung around his bed, which I'm not sure where he found. His room is a mess and smells like a thousand different rats live in here.
"Hey, uh, I just wanted to say goodnight." Peter turns his head to me and nods.
"Goodnight, Tony." I smile and he looks back up at the ceiling.
I was about to close the door, before I remembered something. "Let's get some sleep. Turn off the lights, cover yourself up. Get some good sleep. You have school tomorrow, too."
"Oh, can I not go?" He sits up a little, looking more alive thank before.
"Sure. Something happen?" I get more comfortable in his doorway, leaning on the wall.
He takes a deep breath."People know. Neds not my friend. I hate it there. I also hate it here. I wanna go home." I see him bite the inside of his cheek. His lips are pressed together tightly, he's holding in his tears.
"Oh Pete, this is your home now, bud." He turns his head away from me and I hear a very quiet and muffle sob. His head rests on his knee and his sleeve of his red hoodie covers the side of his face.
"Can I be alone." He doesn't turn around, but I don't move. I don't know if he can sense me or not.
"Please." His voice breaks. I can't just leave him, I shouldn't, but he's asking. I sigh slowly and slowly walk away. Worried I did the wrong thing, I shut his door.
Did I do the right thing? Am I being a good parent? What will happen cause of this decision.
More and more thoughts like those run through my head as I try to sleep. Except I can't sleep. I'm laying on my gigantic bed staring at the ceiling, just like Peter. Father like son? Son like father?
I end up drifting off to sleep sometime around two AM. My night is filled with nightmares that don't make any sense.
I'm not trying to be selfish or straight up hating Peter, but this night would've been better if his aunt never died.
