Chapter 3
Hours had gone by, the subject was sure of it. Waking up from his nap with a huge yawn, he sighed quietly. His hunger had been satiated for now, his stomach full after eating a whole human being. Now that hunger wasn't his main concern, his consciousness was finally weighing down on him.
Had he really done that?
Had he really just eaten a human being, something he had once been?
Did he really enjoy it?
Breathing hard, the subject squeezed his eyes shut and smacked himself in the head. A low growl emitted from his own throat. Hearing it sent the subject into a downward spiral of negative thoughts. Of course he had eaten that human, that's what monsters do. And he was one. Reopening his eyes, he was horrified when he noticed a reddish tint at the edges of his vision. What did this mean? What was going on? Drowning in anguish, the subject tucked away into his box. At that moment, a door opened.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I must caution you. This creature is not for the faint of heart," a voice spoke, accompanied only by the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. The subject recognized the voice. It was the man with the lack of morality and humanity, wasn't it? Growling in anger, the subject forced himself to remain calm. The time to strike would come soon, just not now. Not when he was straining to hear what was being said.
"I present to you the very first of my Bigger Bodies Initiative, Experiment 1160," the heartless man spoke, his voice full of pride. The subject hated hearing him speak with his aura of superiority. But there was something that the man had said that had him thinking. Experiment 1160. What in the world was that supposed to mean? Was... was that supposed to be him? Was he this Experiment 1160?
"Impressive work Harley," a new voice spoke. Another male with an aura of superiority. Great, just wonderful. The subject could hear a growl. Remarkably, it wasn't from him this time. He listened quietly as this new man continued to speak, "I'm surprised that, out of our entire roster of characters, you chose a more obsolete one and I'm not sure I want to know how much it cost to make this thing but great job nonetheless!"
"What I would like to know," a third man spoke slowly and deliberately, "Is what are we supposed to do with this one? You mentioned how the other experiments like 1163 and 1166 were, for lack of a better word, useless. How is this one any better than its successors?"
"Because we have already found a task for him," the heartless man answered without any hesitation. The subject frowned when he heard that. He had a task? What was it? He soon got his answer when the man remarked, "Remember Rowan Stoll? That little problem has been taken care of, all thanks to 1160."
"Wait wait wait," the second of the voices stammered, "Are you telling me that thing killed him?!" There was a low chuckle before the heartless man replied, "Precisely! 1160 can easily dispatch any troublemakers. No one will ever know what happened to them and you can carry on making toys without the threat of a whistleblower. Would you all like a demonstration?" When no answer came, he called out loudly, "Alright boys, bring her in!"
Sitting in his box, the subject heard the screams of a lady joined by the heavy stomps of boots. He could also hear something or someone being dragged across the floor. Meanwhile, the heartless human explained, "Leith, you told me that Miss Kathy here has been taking pictures of highly confidential files this morning. I had the boys round her up just for this." All of the sudden, something was thrown against the side of the box. Startled, the subject jumped out.
"Woah, maybe we should back up?" a man in a suit stated, his eyes wide. His voice matched that of the superior sounding man. The fella next to him, an older man with a cane, backed away slowly as he mumbled, "Way ahead of you there Leith." Then there was the human with a lack of morality. The subject remembered him well. He was smiling up at him. It was like he was waiting for something. Whatever it was, the subject knew he wasn't going to like it. He also didn't like the armed men standing behind the trio.
A whimper caught the subject's attention. Looking down, he found a young red haired woman with wide rimmed glasses and an olive green dress. Staring up at him, the lady opened her mouth and screamed at the top of her lungs. Taken aback by this, the subject stepped away from her and lowered his head while growling softly.
[it's okay, i don't want to hurt you ma'am.]
"1160!" the heartless human barked, his face red with anger. Looking up, the subject bared his fangs at the man in the white coat. God he couldn't stand him, not one little bit! During this time, the lady seized this opportunity and bolted away towards the stairs. She didn't get far when the man grabbed her. "Let go of me!" the woman screeched. Holding onto her wrist with a white knuckled grip, the heartless man replied coldly, "You're not going anywhere." Watching the whole scene, something in the subject snapped.
[LET HER GO!]
Letting out a thundering roar, the subject launched himself forward. The two men in suits scrambled back while the armed squadron raised their guns. But the subject ignored them all. His target right now was the man in the white coat. All it would take was one bite and it would be done and over with. Determined to wipe this waste of oxygen off the face of the Earth, the subject opened his jaws and chomped down. The sweet taste of blood flooded his mouth. Satisfied, the subject backed away. He was expecting to see the man's legs laying on the ground. But instead he saw the human standing with a lady's arm still in his grasp. The truth slowly dawned upon him.
[no... no no no no no no no... ay dios mio... what have i done...]
"Gentlemen!" the heartless man declared, letting the lady's arm drop to the floor, "Isn't 1160 just perfect? He was born for this role!" The man in the suit scratched his chin thoughtfully and commented, "A killing machine." Listening to every word exchanged between the humans, the subject stared numbly at the amputated arm. A pool of blood was already staining the floor red. The woman was dead and it was all his fault. Breathing hard, the subject turned his gaze towards the man in the white coat. The edges of his vision were beginning to turn red again. Ignoring that, the subject hissed his one and only warning.
Then he attacked just as the gunshots rang out.
