Chapter 4
"Look out!" a small elephant plush trumpeted, jumping behind a chunk of concrete. The Bunzo Bunny toy and the unicorn plush he had been chatting with scrambled to find cover the moment they heard heavy footsteps approaching. All of the toys in the area hid just in time as the subject arrived on the scene.
Stalking down the hallway with his latest kill hanging from his mouth, the subject held his head high as he passed by everyone. He could see them all eyeing his prize. Thankfully, no one made a move. They were all too scared of the monster in their midst.
It's been a couple of months now. At least, that's what the subject figured. He wasn't too sure, to be honest. He could also care less about how much time had passed since his creation. What was done is done, no turning back now. He was no longer a human but a beast, an ungodly creature made by mankind. An animal that had no name but rather an experiment number.
He was 1160.
Snarling at his fellow experiments as he exited the hallway, 1160 crept into a dark and musty room. Another Bunzo Bunny toy and a large green dinosaur resided here. Upon seeing him however, they quickly got up and ran. Perfect, now he was alone. Settling down into his box, 1160 dropped his meal. A man, likely in his seventies, laid there on the floor before him. What he did to piss off the higher ups was beyond 1160's knowledge but boy was the smell of blood getting to him right now. Without a second thought, he snatched the carcass and swallowed it whole. In the past, he would have felt remorseful. But now, the subject didn't care anymore.
Not when his whole world was red.
1160 wasn't sure why his vision had changed. Was it due to how much flesh and blood was in his diet? Or was it because he was always angry? Whatever it was, it didn't matter to him. Not anymore. The subject had stopped caring about a lot of things. No more wondering what his previous life had been like. No more wondering why the scientists were still making experiments like him and the others. No more wondering about why they were lumped up into this underground storage room. The only thing that mattered to 1160 these days was when his next meal would be. His stomach would not stop growling and he was struggling to keep up with his own ravenous appetite.
A small noise came from near the room's only doorway. Whipping his head around, 1160 let out a huge hiss. His fuzzy fur standing on end, the poor giant toy that foolishly entered his domain quickly spun on his heel and fled. Letting out an exasperated huff, 1160 glared one final time before he tucked himself away into his box. Out of sight, out of mind. Just how he liked it.
Allowing the darkness of his box to blanket him, 1160 closed his eyes. His breathing slowed and his spinning thoughts settled down. It didn't take long for sleep to take a hold of him with an icy cold grip. Dreams were not waiting for him tonight, instead only nightmares. Memories of recent events in the past few months flashed in his mind. The faces of all he had killed were there, screaming in terror all over again. He felt no remorse, these people had kept him fed. But they were irritating 1160 tremendously. They were dead, why should they haunt him?
His eyes snapping open, 1160 found himself staring at the dark void that was the inside of his box. This was actually more comforting than seeing the backside of his eyelids. Keeping his breathing slow and rhythmic, the subject sat there in silence for the longest time. And it was very quiet, both in the room and beyond it. No thoughts, no words. Just silence. The surrounding atmosphere was calm and peaceful, all just for him.
Something wasn't right.
There's no way it could be this quiet, not when every single experiment was down here in this underground storage room. What was everyone up to? His curiosity getting the better of him, 1160 sprung out of his box and stalked out of the room. Walking down the empty hallway, his nerves started to jump all over the place. Where the heck was everyone? Following his nose, he eventually found them all crowded in the main room where the scientists dropped off food. They were all staying in the shadows, their eyes watching something in the middle of the room. Curious, 1160 followed their gazes.
A lone Bron toy sat in the spotlight, staring at its feet. Either it didn't know about the audience watching from the shadows or it did and was choosing to ignore everyone and everything. That was fine by 1160, he hated being around others to begin with so perhaps one who wasn't interested would be a nice change in pace. But there was something about this Bron toy that made it different from all of the other experiments, he was sure of it. And he was determined to get down to the bottom of this.
Keeping to the shadows behind everyone else, 1160 poked his head up every now and then as he circled the group. He was trying his hardest to catch the Bron toy's scent. It was hard with the overwhelming but delightfully sweet smell of the other experiments. He needed to get closer. Slipping past three mini Wuggies who scattered upon seeing him, 1160 stretched his large cubical head as far as he could. The little Bron toy in the center of the room didn't notice him. It was too busy looking left and right at all of the other experiments. The dinosaur currently was looking away from 1160, its attention focused on one of the PJ Pug-a-pillars. Taking this chance, the subject inhaled deeply. A revolting stench insulted his nostrils. Of course! This Bron toy was indeed different from the children turned experiments!
The Bron toy was an adult.
Music filled the air. 1160 didn't know where it was coming from but he knew, deep down, that it was a warning sign of what was to come. The Bron toy was too oblivious to notice. The other experiments, on the other hand, started to move away. His body shaking with fury, a growl rumbled in 1160's throat. They were now experimenting on adults and turning them into toys?! Were they trying to spy on them now?! He couldn't allow this. Hissing, the subject pounced.
Poor Bron had no idea what was happening until it was too late. Swatting the smaller toy with his clawed hand, 1160 let out a deep bellow. His jaws open wide, he chomped down on the dinosaur and shook him violently. By now, the air was filled with the screams and shrieks of the other experiments. Was the Bron toy also screaming? Throwing the small toy down onto the concrete floor, 1160 let out another thundering roar.
Gunshots rang out.
Feeling something sharp and small prick his skin, 1160 hissed in retaliation as he spun around on his heel. He found himself face to face with a dozen armed men. And they were still shooting at him. Baring his teeth, the subject accepted their challenge. His left hand shot forward and pushed one man back, smashing his fragile body against the wall. Roaring at the other pesky humans, he bolted out of the room. The squadron followed, leaving behind poor Bron to be picked up by a group of scientists.
The other experiments fled for their lives as 1160 raced by. The humans gave chase, firing their guns. Feeling a stinging sensation in his hand, the subject stole a glance. There were three tranquilizer darts. He could feel more all over his head. Of course they were trying the old dart trick to stop him. They were gonna need a lot more darts though if they wanted to do that. Worse, they were in his domain now. He had the upper hand. Entering a dark room, he lurked in the shadows near the door. Two men foolishly followed him and immediately got eaten. The taste of their blood in his mouth, 1160 turned to greet the next man with open jaws. Instead, he found a canister rolling his way. It suddenly exploded and the room filled up with a red colored gas.
His eyes stinging from the smoke, 1160 stumbled around blindly. Sure, all he ever saw these days was red. But this? This was different. He couldn't see anything beyond the red smoke. And it was getting harder to breathe. His lungs ached from how much coughing and sputtering he was doing. Collapsing onto the floor, 1160 feebly dragged himself. To where, he didn't know. He just needed to escape. But it was too hard. His chin hitting the floor, the subject gasped for air. His head felt like it was spinning out of control. He was seeing images flash before his eyes. A pile of bones in a dark cave, blood raining down upon him. Distant voices rang in his ears while a giant hand reached out towards him.
Then everything went black...
