Chapter 1
Bright. The lights were too bright. Groaning quietly, the creature shielded his eyes with his hands. No, not hands. They weren't hands anymore. He had paws now, four in total. Each paw had three toes equipped with sharp claws. Why were they like that? The creature didn't know. He didn't even know what he was supposed to be.
He didn't know who he once was.
A sound. He could hear something. It was a door. A door was opening. Keeping his sensitive eyes shielded from the bright light overhead, the creature lifted his head. There were two people in the room with him, a man and a woman. Both wore white coats. Doctors perhaps? The creature wasn't entirely sure. Wait, the people. They were talking.
Talking to him.
"Experiment 1166, Yarnaby. Can you hear us?" the man asked, looking up from the clipboard he had brought with him. Yarnaby. The creature wondered if that was his name. It was now he figured. Heaving himself up to his paws, the creature opened his mouth to speak. His vision suddenly split into two. Plus, no words came out. All Yarnaby heard was a strange gurgling sound coming from his own throat.
"Oh my god!" the woman screamed in horror. Closing his mouth, Yarnaby felt relieved when his vision became one again. He found the woman laying on the floor, scrambling backwards. The man looked as pale as a bed sheet. One would think he had seen a ghost. The two people fled the room, slamming the door behind them. Not wanting to be left behind, Yarnaby followed them and pawed at the door. He could hear screams on the other side. Curious, the creature went over to the window for a look.
It wasn't a window. It was a mirror. Yarnaby was looking at his own reflection in a mirror. Goodness, is that what he looked like? He was covered in multicolored yarn. It reminded him of a lion's mane. His face was quite peculiar though. His head was a sphere, his smiling mouth and teeth were stitched on and his eyes were bugged out. What were the people so scared of? Curious, Yarnaby opened his mouth.
His vision was split again. Frustrated by this, Yarnaby turned his head to the side so he could look at the mirror with one eye. What he saw sent shivers down his own spine. The mouth stitched on his face was fake. His real mouth was his whole head. The creature's head was split vertically in two, revealing huge teeth on his massive sideways jaws. No wonder the people were scared. They had seen a monster. Horrified by this revelation, Yarnaby closed his mouth and shuffled away from the mirror. He couldn't stand looking at his reflection anymore, it was terrifying.
Monstrous.
