Chapter 2

Laying on his side on the tile floor, Yarnaby sighed heavily. There was nothing to do in the little room that he was cooped up in. No furniture, no activities of any kind. He had been staring at the wall for hours, trying desperately to remember anything from his past life. He kept drawing a blank on that though. The creature couldn't remember a single memory. All he has ever known was the empty room he currently resided in.

The door creaked open. Great, more people to accidentally freak out. Yarnaby didn't mean to scare the people in white coats but it always happened every single day. The creature lost count of how many days it's been. He continued to lay there on the floor, ignoring whoever had just entered the room.

Then the person spoke.

"Hello Quinn, do you recognize me?" a masculine voice spoke. Yarnaby's head shot up. That voice, he knew that voice. Rolling over onto his back, the multicolored creature found himself face to face with the speaker. A tall man with glasses and dark hair, he wore a white coat like the others. But he looked so familiar to Yarnaby. Where had he seen this man before?

"Do you recognize me Quinn?" the man questioned, adjusting his glasses. His cold eyes narrowed as he quietly studied Yarnaby's face. Was he looking for something? What was it? Yarnaby stared back at the man, trying to figure who the heck he was. The man seemed to sense the dilemma the creature was having because he placed a hand on his chest and introduced himself, "Quinn, you know me. I am Dr. Harley Sawyer, your friend. Remember?"

Dr. Harley Sawyer! The Dr. Harley Sawyer?! No, it couldn't be! Could it? Curious, Yarnaby stood up and approached the man cautiously. He needed to get a closer look. The man must've read his mind because he crouched down to the creature's level. Now seeing him eye to eye, Yarnaby stared at the human. His face was so familiar, something from a time long ago. The creature could faintly recall memories of this man, this doctor. Whatever happened in his old life, this man had been a frequent visitor. He had been a friend, his friend. Excitement coursing through his veins, Yarnaby lovingly tackled Harley to the floor.

"What the- get off!" Harley angrily shouted. Startled, Yarnaby scrambled off of the doctor and scampered away to a corner of the empty room. Sitting down, the multicolored creature stared at the human. Picking himself off of the tile floor, Harley dusted himself off before turning to face Yarnaby. Clearing his throat, he murmured, "Let's try that again. Quinn, come here."

Quinn? Who was this Quinn that Harley spoke of? Yarnaby tilted his head in confusion. He didn't know anyone named Quinn. Then again, he didn't really know anybody. The creature stared at Harley, waiting for his friend to do something. Folding his hands behind his back, the man met Yarnaby's wide eyed stare as he spoke again, "Okay... let's try this. Come here Yarnaby."

Yes! There was his name! Letting out a squeak of joy, Yarnaby jumped up to his paws and scurried over to Harley's side. Stopping himself before he could accidentally mow his friend over, the multicolored creature sat down and gazed up at the human. A small smile crept onto Harley's face as he addressed Yarnaby, "Good, very good. You can understand me and follow orders. That is a start." The man then reached out and patted Yarnaby on the head as he continued, "I'm very proud of you." A warm fuzzy feeling building up inside his chest, the creature purred sweetly.

It was great having a friend like Harley.
