Chapter 6

Things have changed recently. Yarnaby was now in a new room. This was much smaller than the white room he had grown accustomed to over the months and possible years of his existence. It was more colorful though with the padded walls that reminded him of a patchwork quilt. And it had a window too, no more mirrors. The transfer between rooms had been weird. Yarnaby was sure he had fallen asleep in the white room one night but then he woke up in this new room the following morning. It had been very stressful, especially since it's been roughly two weeks since he had seen Dr. Harley Sawyer last.

Where was Harley anyway? Yarnaby still couldn't tell time but he was positive that his friend should have been here by now. And yet there had been no sign of him in the past two weeks or so. God Yarnaby wished he could tell time. But he wished for Harley more than anything in the world.

Footsteps. Yarnaby could hear footsteps. Was it Harley? He needed to know! The creature jumped to his paws and dashed over to the window just as two men approached the glass. One wore a white coat and the other was dressed in a black suit. Neither of them were Harley. Upset that this was his first human interaction in two weeks, Yarnaby opened his vertical mouth and hissed.

"Save your breath 1166. That old trick doesn't work on anyone anymore," the man in the black suit pointed out sternly. Unbeknownst to him, the fella in the white coat was shaking like a leaf. Baring his teeth fearsomely, Yarnaby paced back and forth in front of the window. He eyed the two men suspiciously. Who were these guys? Where was Harley? He wanted Harley. The yarn along his back bristled anxiously as he let out a scratchy sounding roar.

"Perhaps we shouldn't tell him. We all know that Experiment 1166 was attached to Dr. Sawyer, unlike the others," the man in the white coat mumbled nervously, casting wary looks in Yarnaby's direction. One glare from the guy in the suit shut him up straight away. Taking a step forward, the man in the suit tapped on the glass. Getting Yarnaby's attention, he spoke, "Listen up Quinn, you better get used to Dr. White here. Dr. Sawyer is never coming back. He's... been relieved of his duty as your caretaker."

For probably the first time since he had been changed, Yarnaby was able to comprehend what was being said to him. Harley was gone. He wasn't coming back. Why? Where did he go? What was he supposed to do now? His vertical mouth slowly closing shut as the realization dawned on him, the multicolored creature stared at his paws. Something wet rolled down his face and splashed down on the floor near one of his claws. A tear. He was crying. Harley had often told him there was no use for tears, they were unnecessary. Well, they felt necessary at this very moment. More tears rolled down the creature's face as he wept softly. Turning his back to the two men watching him, Yarnaby collapsed on the floor.

He needed his friend more than anything right now.
