Chapter 1

Maybe This Is the Good Chance...

School. I wish it never started. Maybe it's just because I am constantly ignored by beautiful and witty girls and noticed by ones I would never, ever want to deal with.

Believe me, with "beautiful and witty girls" I mean that sexy bomb named Rylin Miller and her friends. Well, all but Aaleyah Ronin. She is anything but a midge. There's nothing that makes her stand out. But never mind. What matters is that this year I am going to try and ask Rylin out.

The worst part, still, is that I don't have many friends. Better say, the only friend I have is as desperate as me. I am not kidding. Cam is trying with every single mean to get a date. I am always trying to help him, because we are friends, and friends should definitely help each other, though it doesn't seem as he's as supportive as I thought. When I fail to get a date, he laughs. He knows I am not charming, but, instead of cheering me up, he constantly reminds me how unlucky I am with girls. To be honest, I am fed up with this.

Anyway, Cam and I are walking towards the entrance, when that angel fallen from heaven comes around, quickly followed by her not-so-heavenly friends, Jaelynn, Leah and, obviously, Aaleyah.

They look like they're laughing and chit-chatting loud, like they always do. I'd love to hear Rylin laughing alone. Her voice is so sultry and feminine, her lips are so soft and beautiful... well... I can't find anything wrong with her... or maybe... the fact her divine voice is covered by the others' ungracious laughter, especially Aaleyah's, which is almost causing me a headache.

When they stop laughing, Rylin is smiling and glancing at something quite unprecised. I hope she wants to smile at me, and so I try to glance at her, but she ignores me.

On the other hand, Aaleyah is catching my glimpse. Though, I immediately turn back. I don't want her looks to cross mine. Cam notices this and laughs. Unfortunately for him, I pull him apart and reprimand him, "Why the fuck are you laughing like that?"

"Dude, didn't you understand? He loves you!" he replies, like this is obvious. Well, it isn't.

"I don't like Aaleyah Ronin, how many times do I have to tell you?" I exclaim, pretty frustrated at what my friend has said. I wish he would listen to me more, sometimes.

However, he just smirks. "You can't say you don't like her if you keep staring at her."

"I am staring at Rylin, not at Aaleyah! Do you need me to draw it for you?" I snap back, again irritated at his reaction. This is proof that he isn't supportive at all. A good friend shouldn't behave like that at all.

However, he still believes I am keeping making excuses. Fed up with him, I leave him behind. Rylin and her friends notice this and follow me, maybe under Aaleyah's insistence. While the three witches (this is how I call Aaleyah, Jaelynn and Leah, because they are clearly envious) stay behind and chat, I try to approach Rylin. I know it's high time for me to man up and declare my feelings to her.

"Can we talk?" I ask her. She nods, but doesn't say a word.

I insist. "Seriously, I'd like to talk with you..."

She smiles coyly and laughs softly, before replying, "Is there anything you want to talk about?"

"Actually, I want to talk to you," I point out, a little embarrassed. I think I am even blushing and this makes me feel an idiot even more than I thought.

"Oh, ok, sorry, I didn't notice that. By the way, what do you want to tell me?" She looks very calm and is glancing at me. It seems that she really wants to listen to me, much to my delight. It's really time to man up and do this.

She notices I am lost in my thoughts and shakes me a little bit. "Hey? Are you here?"

"Oh, sorry, I got distracted by my thoughts," I reply, trying to make up an excuse for my shyness.

"Don't worry. It can happen." She isn't angry at all, better say she is still smiling. I am feeling so in peace with myself. She has this effect, and it's good for me.

Naturally, I, worry free, speak up, "Rylin, I think I should tell you. It's something I've never told anybody but Cam. You know, I don't trust people that easily, but I trust my friend. And I trust you."

"Thank you," she mutters, still smiling.

"You're welcome. Anyway, Rylin, I must tell you before it's too late and someone else takes your heart before I do." I am talking so fast that she isn't understanding that much, but I still hope she catches these words. "Rylin, I love you." I am blushing and trembling like an idiot. This is not good. She is noticing, and, suddenly, she stops smiling, much to my disbelief. Her serious looks are too stern for my liking. I can't stand her serious face.

"What did you say?" she asks.

I stand like a dumb ass, without even saying a single word.

"Like, what did you say?" she repeats. "I didn't understand a single word. Can you repeat?"

I try to be clearer and explain, "The truth is this. I, Gareth Birch, love you, Rylin Miller." I point at her and then go on. "And I hope you don't think I am enough a jerk not to deserve your love!"

"Seriously, what the fuck are you talking about?" She looks very confused and doesn't know how to reply.

"Rylin, are you paying attention or what? I thought it would be clear," I reply, a bit irritated at her reaction.

"I am, Gareth, please don't be mad at me," she replies back, still with her calm tone.

"Ok. Now I understand you are paying attention at me. Ok. It's important. I love you. I want you to be my girlfriend. That's it."

Rylin stares at me cluelessly. Again, it seems as she didn't catch anything of what I told her. This is pissing me off a bit. However, it seems as I don't have to repeat myself, and that what she is gonna say is pretty clear.

"Listen, Gareth, you are a nice guy, even if a bit shy, and I enjoy talking to you, but I don't think you and I would make a good couple," she states. "Like, don't get offended, but you don't have a winning personality."

I am offended. How could she say so? It's so mean and disrespectful of hers. She deceived me! Not like she is putting me in the friendzone, she is trying to say she doesn't want to deal with me anymore.

Rylin Miller thinks that I, Gareth Daniel Birch, am a loser!

I am done with her.
