Chapter 2

Dealing with Disillusionment

What makes me suffer the most, shortly after Rylin's rejection, is Aaleyah coming shortly after. God, I don't like that girl. I don't want to stay close to her. When she tries to approach me, I start leaving.

Rylin Miller broke my heart and Aaleyah Ronin is pretending to be able to mend it, like nothing serious happened to me.

No, no, no. I don't give a fuck about her. To me, Aaleyah is nobody. I don't want to deal with her, as much as I want to stay away from Cam.

I can't believe what Rylin said, again. At first I thought it was a joke, but, unfortunately, she wasn't joking. She is absolutely disrespectful, and so are her horrible friends.

At lunch, I am staying on my own. I wish no-one would notice my presence, though everyone is actually doing. What makes me mad is that Cam is following them. I am very disappointed in him. I know he wouldn't be as supportive as I think, but this time he passed the limit. I've already lost the love of my life, though I think I'll lose my so-called friend, as well.

So many people are laughing at me. Milly Lane, Molli Peighton and Kira Trinley, the incredibly nosy and hateful gossips, are taking pictures of my sad face. Even Leah, that devil's friend, is chatting about me on the phone. "So, Lyndsey, you mustn't tell anyone in your grade, because it's a sort of secret. Rylin has just rejected a guy..."

Upon hearing that sentence, I immediately stand up and shout, "A secret, huh! You liar! Don't you even dare talk about me, especially if you mention Rylin, ok?" Then, I take Leah's phone and throw it somewhere in the middle of the canteen. Someone could be walking over it, breaking it. I don't care. Neither Rylin nor her friends have to mess with me.

Leah, confused and angry at the same time, replies sourly, "This is why Rylin rejected you. Learn to control your feelings." She turns her back at me and leaves. God, I hate her. I barely retain myself from yelling a 'fuck you.' In fact, later, I end up doing so.

I am about to sit down again and eat my meager lunch, when a professor, whom I don't recognize, stops me. "Gareth Birch, please come to the Principal's office. Now."

Oh, shit, I recognize his voice. It's the Viceprincipal's. I don't like that man. He's just an envious snake. Envious because he didn't become the Principal, as he expected, and a snake because he ill-treats everybody, especially teenagers. I think it's because he has no children.

Oh, back to events. I have to head to the Principal's office. But why? It's just the first fucking day! Why can't I stay in peace for at least one day?

I follow the Viceprincipal to his chief's office. While it takes just a couple of minutes from the canteen to reach the office, it seems it takes hours. I am a bit worried about a possible detention. Believe me, my parents are so apprehensive that they would do whatever they can to get me out of it, though they would also put me into an embarrassing situation doing so.

As soon as I get in, I take a seat. Even though I've been there only once, I find it so familiar. I don't know what this feeling is. Nothing very good, I suppose. Meanwhile, the Viceprincipal is leaving, much to my distress. I have to face the Principal alone.

"So, Mr Birch, I heard you're having a bit of trouble today," says the latter. I am hearing what he says, but I am not paying particular attention to what it means.

"Mr Birch? Are you well? If you don't mind, could you pay attention, please?"

"Oh, sorry." For some strange reasons, I avoid saying 'I was lost in my thoughts,' given I know he wouldn't believe me.

"I heard you forcedly took Leah Bleta's phone and threw it on the canteen floor. I hope it isn't broken, for your sake. I don't think you wanna pay the reparations or buy her a new one," he states.

I am not willing to buy that snake a new phone. She made fun of me.

"I can explain. She was making fun of me on the phone." I barely retain myself from using swear words, but I can't help raising my voice, something I immediately regret. "I have been rejected by a girl. She and her friends, though, instead of being nice, were mean." I don't want to admit they have behaved like snakes.

"Are you sure? What did they exactly say?" He is becoming increasingly more suspicious, and his furrowed eyebrows are proof that he doesn't believe me. I bet he's going to give me detention. But I don't want to be punished, given my parents would do anything in their power to get me out of it, as I said before.

"When Rylin Miller, the girl who rejected me, and her friends reunited, I felt somehow hurt, because I knew they would say bad things about me. In fact, Jaelynn and Leah did. I admit I lost my mind when I learnt what they did, and therefore overreacted, but I was seriously going to try and make amends. Though, I don't know if it's worth it or if it's useful."

"Have you considered that there are other girls besides Rylin Miller out there, who may also be much more approachable than her?" he asks. Oh, God, he's talking about Aaleyah, the girl I don't want to deal with at all! Why do I have to be so unlucky? Is that midge the only girl I deserve to be close to?

"I know what you're thinking." The Principal's last sentence is bringing me back to reality.

"Really?"

"There is a girl, Aaleyah Ronin, whose only interest is you. She always wanted to talk to you civilly, but you were always distant. Today wasn't different. I don't know what she did to you in order not to deserve your attention, but I highly suggest you stop ignoring her. Is that clear?" Why does it sound like a threat? Is he really trying to make me become her boyfriend?

"Y-y-yes," I stutter, still confused at his last words.

"You can leave now." He points at the door, which I immediately reach, before exiting the office. Naturally, my negative thoughts are following me.

'But why? Why? And, particularly, what can I do? If someone catches me with Aaleyah, I'll be made fun of for the rest of my life. Also, I don't like her. The Principal had better be right, otherwise I'll make sure I'll try to never get in trouble.'
