MIND OVER MATTER
'I just can't believe it has stopped again,' I said, patting the back of my phone on the back of my palm.
My phone hadn't been working fine since Portia- one of my flat mates- had accidently spilled orange juice on it, last night. It had been working fine a while ago while I was talking to Arthur but it just shut itself down after that.
'Buy yourself a new one,' Sasha suggested, dipping her nachos in the cheese dip, never moving her eyes from the screen of the TV playing, 10 Things I Hate About You. I rolled my eyes. As if that were an easy thing to do, I thought.
I grabbed some nachos and stuffed my mouth throwing my phone aside. 'I have to save money to pay Arthur back for the gift he bought my mom,' I replied. After having finished with everything at uni, I was free until the New Year. So I decided to go home for the Christmas holiday. Arthur was staying with his Grandparents for Christmas so I was kind of looking forward to it.
'You don't have to pay him back,' Sasha said with stuffed mouth. 'I mean, you are dating him now.'
'It's just been one date,' I laughed rolling my eyes. Last night was fun but I still wasn't sure what Arthur had on his mind. I knew I had some strong feelings for him but did he really feel the same? What if he didn't? What if the kiss last night just came with the flow of the moment? What if he had regret it the next moment? All the 'what ifs' were driving me crazy. My train was in about three hours so I was just wasting away time with Sasha.
'Can you drive me to the phone store?' I asked her. She shrugged and switched the TV off placing the bowl of nachos in my lap she got up and said, 'let me get ready.'
Within five minutes Sasha was out wearing a nice brown corduroy jacket with some black jeans and boots. I always admired her fashion sense. But I really didn't want to settle for the way she got that. I mean I hardly had any time to read magazines right now. Sasha drove me up to the nearest store where I gave them to fix my phone, but the people instead of fixing it, broke it even worse. I was so annoyed when they said, 'We're sorry ma'am. But you will have to seek a new set.'
Sasha drove me to Starbucks to elevate my mood. We grabbed some coffee and muffins before heading off to the station. She turned the radio on and Carly Rey Jepson's Call Me Maybe was playing. Sasha and I began singing out loud.
'Stay tuned for after the ads we are having a talk with the lads of...' there was silence for a second before the RJ began talking again in more energetic voice, 'yes! You guessed it right, the lad of The Black Illusions!' I was sad yet I couldn't help but smile at the name of the band. The excitement to see Arthur again was taking over me now. After the ads got over with the RJ returned with the boys. 'Well, here in the studio I am sitting with the boys of every teen girl's wild fantasy. Yes, the smart and handsome boys from The Black Illusions! Blake Friel.'
I saw the biggest grin on Sasha's face when Blake said, 'Hey, Tim.'
I nudged her and she rolled her eyes. The RJ went on, 'The Weiz Twins- Noah and Nolan.'
'Hey everyone!' both said in unison.
'And Arthur Crawford!'
'Hi, all,' Arthur said in his chivalrous voice.
'So, guys how's it going?' Tim asked none in particular.
Blake replied for all. 'Well, it's going great, mate. We're recording some new tracks for our album right now and then there's going to be a few gigs coming up.'
'Excited?'
'Absolutely!' Nolan or Noah answered. 'That's the best part when we get up on the stage and have fun.'
They talked for a while and played songs along. When the final segment came up, we were actually stuck in the traffic. While waiting for the road to clear up, I heard Tim ask, 'Okay, now the question everyone is dying to know. Who is single?'
'I'm taken,' one of the twins answered. I wondered if that was real or it was Marcus again. The other one answered, 'single.'
'Single as well,' Blake replied.
It was Arthur's turn now. It seemed like I had my full concentration on the radio while I was nibbling on my thumb. It seemed like he was taking too long to answer. Was it really him or was it because I was waiting for an answer?
'You just broke up a few weeks ago Arthur,' Tim said. 'Or are you guys back together?'
'Single,' he replied and my heart almost sank. 'But I have someone on my mind,' he added, with an audible grin. My heart skipped a beat.
'Well, I guess we know who that is,' Sasha giggled.
I blushed as she drove out towards the station. 'Would you mind telling us who the lady is?' Tim probed.
'I'd rather not,' he replied and I sighed in relief while I heard Tim sigh in exasperation. Sasha pulled near the front of the station and helped me to the platform where we were waiting for my train to arrive.
'So what's going on between you and Arthur?' Sasha asked, sitting down on a bench at the platform.
I sat down beside her with my coffee in my hand. I sighed, 'I really don't know. We haven't ever talked about it.'
'What do you mean?'
'You heard the interview,' I said. 'He's single.'
'Yeah and I heard that part as well that he has someone on his mind.' She nudged me with a playful grin.
I smiled rolling my eyes and brought the mug of my coffee close to my mouth. Holding the straw between my teeth, I answered, 'could be someone else.'
'Oh, please!' she said, rolling her eyes this time. 'You guys are dating, Chast! Of course it's you he was talking about.'
'Yeah, but one date doesn't decide that.' I had my own fears in mind, the first one being Marcus. He wouldn't allow this. He didn't want distraction for the boys, and now hearing this interview, I am sure he's going to do something. I just hope he doesn't pressurize Arthur to do something he doesn't want to. Also I didn't want to bother him with this. He was already too caught up in his work that the last thing I wanted for him to worry about was if we were boy friend and girlfriend. 'Can we not talk about this please?'
She shook her head. 'Fine.'
I sat there sipping my coffee, when Sasha suddenly wrapped her arms around me saying, 'Don't worry, I am sure he was talking of you.'
I giggled.
'Are you going to see him over the holiday?' she asked tilting her head up.
I nodded.
'So ask him then,' she suggested. 'Get things cleared up.'
The train was before its scheduled time, and I had no phone to notify my parents of this time change. I turned to look at Sasha. 'Notify my parents of the time change,' I told her running to board on the train.
'Sure,' she said and waved at me. 'Have a safe journey, hoe!'
I giggled, waving back at her. I pulled out my phone from my bag after having got settled in my seat. I patted it and tried to switch it on but it just won't work. I sighed and folded my legs close to my chest staring outside. After a short moment the train began moving and the platform began running away. I wish Sasha didn't have to go to her grandparent's place so I would've had someone to talk to.
The next thing I knew, the train was pulling into the Birmingham station. I got off the train and grabbed an empty bench. I just hoped Sasha had informed my parents of the change in schedule. But I guess she forgot because I couldn't see my parents even after ten minutes of sitting there.
'Is this seat taken?' A sweet voice of a girl asked. I looked up to find a girl with blonde hair and petite figure standing in front of me, smiling at me with both her shiny pink lips and sparkling green eyes. I smiled and shook my head shifting a bit on the bench to make space for her.
'Waiting for someone?' She asked in a friendly voice.
I nodded. 'My parents were going to pick me up but the train had to be before time today.'
She giggled. 'Trains.'
'Hi, I'm Chastity,' I said, offering her my hand.
She grinned, 'Emma! Well, I can give you a ride if you want.'
I sighed looking with her in relief. 'That'd be a great help, please?'
She laughed. 'My driver will be here soon.'
So, Clair gave me a ride home and I must say she really had a friendly vibe. She was pretty open to me with herself. I found out that she was a model and had worked for some TV shows and had just got signed for a movie. I laughed and asked her for an autograph so that when her movie comes out, I'd say that I knew her. She laughed and gave me one as I insisted.
I must've come across as a crazy but I guess she didn't mind. Well, I hope she didn't. She gave me her number too, but when I told her that I didn't have one for now, she just smiled and said, 'its fine, love. Call me anytime.'
At home I got greeted by my mom and dad who apologized for not being there to receive me. They told me that Elliot was going to land down tonight. Dad and I decided to go and receive him. 'Why didn't you call us?' mom asked as we sat down to dine.
'I told Sasha to let you know, but I guess it slipped out of her mind.'
'She did tell us, but dear we're in old age.' Dad laughed. 'You could've called us from the station.'
I told him about my phone problem and he promised to take me to a phone store in the evening. The phone didn't get much better however the man fixed it as much for me to make calls and texts. Although it kept shutting down every now and then, at least I was able to receive texts from Arthur and reply to them.
Arthur: Hey, love! Too excited to see you!! Have a safe journey! X Text me when you get there.
It was from the morning after I got of the call from him. I smiled at his text and began typing a reply.
Chastity: Hey, I'm here in Birmingham! Can't wait to see you too! Xx Sorry, I'm late but my phone broke down and it just keeps shutting down by itself.
He must've been free because he replied instantly.
Arthur: I'll be landing there tonight. Dinner? X
I had almost typed a yes but then I realized that I was going to the airport to receive Elliot.
Chastity: I would've loved to. But my brother is landing here tonight as well. I'll be receiving him. Wait you're still in Lancaster? X
Arthur: Till twelve tonight, yes. Xx Get your phone fixed, I want to talk to you soon. I'll plan something out for tomorrow.Xx
I giggled. He was as excited to see me as I was.
Chastity: Alright. Xx
Dad and I left to pick Elliot up after that. I was glad to see my brother again and he was really happy to see that I was there to receive him. Dad ordered in food and we sat down like we usually did discussing our lives and watching TV after that. Nearly at twelve, we retired to our beds and I should've been tired because I hadn't got a chance to sleep through the day, also because, I reached home in the evening, so I didn't have much time between going to the phone store and then to the airport to pick Elliot up. Surprisingly, my whole body was buzzing. I really wanted to see Arthur. I wished I could pick him up somehow. I contemplated sneaking out to pick him up but, I wasn't the one to drive.
I kept tossing and turning in my bed. I knew I should be sleeping and that I'd be seeing him tomorrow, but there was something in me keeping me awake. I picked my phone up and tried calling him. Even though it was eleven- thirty and I was completely aware of the fact that he wouldn't be here for another half an hour yet I tried. My call went directly to voice mail and I disconnected the call and threw my phone on the bed beside me. I grabbed onto a pillow and lay there sleepless in bed, in my baby pink Hello Kitty pyjamas and my black wool knit sweater, staring at the fluorescent stickers, I put there as a kid in order to spend my nights under the stars, that glowed in the dark .
As I just stared at the stars, I couldn't help but think. What if I really wasn't the girl that Arthur had talked of? What if it was someone else? Was Marcus planning a new girl for him? What if he was going out with other girls that he considers his girlfriends? I mean, we have hung out as friends once and though he called last night a date don't really indicate that he could be talking of me. And yes, we have been talking over the phone every night, for quite a time now, but we never once talked about what we are? And for all I knew he could be dating someone else.
I sighed and wrapped my arms and legs around my pillow as the thoughts continued. Yes, we have kissed once, but did he really mean to do it? I wanted to ask him all. The questions were driving me crazy. While I was lying sleepless in my bed, I even imagined all that I'd say to him. But I knew myself too well to think that I really would have the guts to do it. I made the cowardly dog look like the terminator.
My phone rang from beside me and I tossed to grab it at light's speed. Midnight was half an hour stale and it was Arthur calling. Excited, elated, I sat up in bed tapping at the green button, trying to contain myself.
'Get down in five,' I heard him say.
I laughed. 'When are you going to stop doing this?' I asked already tearing the covers off me and jumping off the bed.
'As long as it keeps surprising you,' he said the grin audible in his voice. 'Now get down fast, I'll be there soon.'
'Okay.'
He hung up and I ran over to the bathroom. I didn't want to look like a troll to the most handsome boy. Fixing my hair a bit, I headed downstairs, careful not to wake anyone up and not to run past a wandering Elliot. Thankfully, he wasn't wandering about so I snuck out easy with butterflies in my stomach. It wasn't a long wait till a black range rover pulled in front of the house across from the street.
I didn't run to it, despite my strong urge to do so, all immediately without making sure that it was really him. It could be someone else's car for all I knew. But then he got out of the passenger's seat wearing a grey sweater, black trousers and his black toms. I couldn't contain myself when he turned to me, after mumbling something to whoever it was in the driver's seat, with the boyish grin stuck to his face.
I ran to him, and saw his arms open wide ready to hold me in them whenever we'd collide. I clung to his chest as tightly as possible and he lifted me inches up from the ground. My heart was beating so hard against the ribs hat I felt sort of giddy. I let out a shaky laugh as he did. I could hear his heart scream out to mine. And in that one moment I knew that I was falling hard for him. I could feel each fibre of my body scream out for him. The moment was so perfect that I wanted us to be there forever. I pulled back, trying to hold back the tears threatening to flow from my eyes.
I was greeted by the smile of his that I loved. 'I wasn't expecting such a grand welcome.'
I huffed out a laugh. 'You have your ways of surprising me, I have mine.'
'Oh, is it?' he challenged. I bit my lip and gave a nod. He chuckled. 'Did I wake you up?'
I shook my head smiling at him still taking in the fact that he was yet holding onto my waist.
'I'm sorry, I couldn't wait until tomorrow to see you,' he laughed. He shook his head and then turned slightly to look back at the car. 'I forgot, Chast, this is Edward, my cousin, I'd be staying at his flat for the night before moving in the hotel with the boys.'
I bent down a bit to find a man in the driver's seat that looked in his early thirties smiling at me through the open window. 'Hi,' I said, 'how are you doing tonight?'
'All good,' he said, grinning. 'Arthur hasn't shut about you since he got off that plane.'
I blushed and looked up at Arthur to find him roll his eyes at his cousin with a grin on his lips and a hint of blush in his skin. Then he looked down at me and that smile of his made a wire of my heart twang.
'I love all of your pyjamas by the way,' he said, pointing down at my pyjama with a smirk on his lips. I grinned.
'Oh, yeah? Remind me to buy some for you the next time I go out shopping.'
He chuckled. 'Why wait? We'll go shopping tomorrow. IF you don't have any plans.'
I giggled. 'No, I don't.'
'Good.' He grinned. And leaned down to lace his lips with mine setting the fireworks in my chest free. He pulled back after a short moment on the account of Edward having coughed. I blushed and he tucked a lock of hair behind my ear saying, 'I've missed you so much, Miss Ericht.'
'As I did, Mr. Crawford,' I said, grinning.
