Chapter 67: Renae

A/N: New POV Approches! Enter: Mama Rae

Renae smiled as she watched Evie walk beside Gordon and Nadia beside Luca. She looked at Minerva and Cameron walking hand in hand and Raquel and Wade in the front of the group taking charge like two little commanders.

It's been so long since I've seen them all so content.

"And what do you two know about Nadia and Luca?" She said as she looked at Charlie and Jack beside her.

"I don't talk about Mr. Shola's personal life, but they're really good friends," Jack chuckled.

Renae pursed her lips, "I suppose that's why you're so good at your job," she murmured and looked at Charlie. "And what do you know?"

"Not much, dear. I had my talk with Luca. He seems like a nice man to me. Like Jack said, they're good friends and I think that's wonderful."

Renae sighed and looked back at the couple in question. Nadia slid on the wet slate underfoot and Luca caught her around her waist as if the action were second nature. He leaned down and whispered something in her ear. She looked up at him and burst out laughing as they continued through the slick trail.

A smile graced Renae's lips as Luca kept his arm around Nadia and tucked against him as if he were protecting her.

"Mm, okay. So Luca treats all his friends like that?" She said and cut her eyes to Jack.

"No, but he cares about Miss Nadia and that's all I'll say about it," he shrugged.
She raised an eyebrow. "How long have you been his bodyguard?"

A smile tugged at Jack's lips. "He's been my charge since he was five years old. I've been with the Shola family for thirty years. Luca's like a son to me."

"Goodness, aren't you ready to retire too?" Charlie said as they followed the group underneath the gushing waterfall.

"No," he chuckled. "I can't imagine not working for the Sholas. They're the only family I've had the pleasure of being part of besides my military squad."

"Oh Jack, were you an orphan? If you don't mind me asking?"

"I don't mind, Mrs. Coleman."

"Please just call me Renae. We're practically the same age," she smiled.

"Thank you, Renae and yes I was an orphan. I went through the foster care system and eventually enlisted in the Marines when I was old enough. How did you know I was an orphan?"

"I'm a retired teacher, but I still know all the signs. I'm glad you found a family and you're always welcome in ours too," she said and looked back at Nadia and Luca. "Maybe one day the Sholas and Colemans will be one family anyway."

"Mm-hm." Jack and Charlie agreed.
Renae's eyes grew wide and she whipped her head at Charlie, "You do know something! Tell me what you know. Did they admit something to you? What about Evie and Gordon?"

Charlie burst out laughing. "They haven't told me anything, darling, but look at our girls. They're happy and when they're ready to tell us they will."

She squinted her eyes at him. "You're way too calm about this. I'll get it out of you," she grumbled but there was laughter in her voice.

"Mama Rae, do we have to go to the top?" Minerva whined as they stood at the top of another set of stone steps.

"To the top! You need to sweat out that alcohol. Keep moving, Nervy," Renae yelled back to her.

"I told you. I don't know why you asked," Nadia huffed as she pushed Minerva forward while Cameron and Luca laughed behind them.

"It's not that bad, you two," Luca laughed.

"Shut up, we're only half way through this shit. You know nothing, Luca!" Nadia yelled back at him which only made him laugh even harder.

Renae couldn't stop the bright smile that spread across her face. She didn't need Nadia to tell her what was going on between them. The look in her eyes and the banter she and Luca had told her enough. Charlie gave it away too. He was far too calm about everything.

My baby girl finally found the one.

A/N: Awww I kind of loved that Jack opened up a bit and Mama Rae cracks me up!
