Chapter 2: First Day
Faith (P.O.V.)
The hallways of Clairemont were crowded.
The school was packed with people.
I somehow managed to find my new locker.
When I got to my locker, I noticed a group of girls looking at me and giggling.
It was annoying to me how people kept looking at me like I was some freak.
"You know they are just jealous of you," A voice said behind me.
I turned around and saw a boy with curly hair.
"What do you mean?" I asked with a confused look.
"You look decent." He said, adjusting his glasses. "Nobody around here ever looks decent."
"That's interesting, I guess."
"I suppose you are new here."
I nodded my head.
"My name is Max Michaelson," He said, extending his hand.
"I'm Faith Davis," I said, shaking his hand.
"How do you like it here so far, Faith?"
I chuckled, shaking my head.
"I don't know," I said. "I mean, the campus is excellent, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it here, but I'm not sure about the people here."
"You will be fine," Max said, adjusting his glasses again. "They are just staring at you because you are different."
"Is it just me, or do all the girls here look funny?"
"Oh, it is normal here. There is nothing funny about it, according to them."
I chuckled at his response.
Max and I got to know each other.
He is a lovely person.
He showed me the school and helped me find my other classes in case we didn't see each other during the day.
The day was going pretty slow.
I hated being the center of attention in almost all my classes.
The only class I felt normal in was American Government, and I liked that class because my new friend Max also had that class.
He is a nerd, but so what?
He is the most realistic person I met ever since I started Clairemont.
My last class was very dull.
Some girls who sat near me were starting to annoy me, so I used the bathroom as an excuse to get away from class.
On my way back from the bathroom, I noticed strange noises from a nearby class.
I looked at the sign next to the classroom door and found out that the class was video game design.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I stopped to see the class.
The classroom is crowded.
Many people are taking this video game design class.
The teacher got the class's attention to announce something.
"Class, this is Robert." He said. "He is new to this class. Please welcome him, and I want him to join Evan's group."
Everybody looked back at a boy with the most perfect posture I have ever seen.
"Will Robert be able to do this?" The boy asked. "I mean, he did just come today."
"Don't worry. I am sure he will after seeing how your group operates."
"Not like that. Making a video game is a creative job. I just wanted to know whether he can adjust with my group."
The teacher looked at the boy with a disappointed expression.
I don't know what his deal is.
His voice, posture, and facial expression look so cold.
Everything looks cold.
He is very good-looking, but something about him is not correct.
"If he doesn't adjust, you guys adjust with him," The teacher said.
"Sorry, I can't adjust with anybody." The boy said without hesitation.
"Youth attitude, Owens!" The teacher exclaimed. "Let me tell you something, kid, adjustment is necessary in life."
I agree with the teacher.
Adjustment is necessary.
I don't know how I would've survived every time we moved if I had never adjusted.
Adjusting to a new place, people, rules, etc, is very important.
"No, it's not." The boy said. "If you adjust, you will always lose in life."
The teacher started to shake his head.
"Look, Evan, either work separately from everybody else or allow Robert into your group." The teacher said.
The room is silent, and so is the boy.
"Sorry, I can't compromise." He said after a moment of silence. "Either you put Robert in a different group, or I'll work alone."
"What is wrong with you?" The teacher answered, "Due to your ego, you will lose a good project you are experienced in."
"That is not what I intend to do, okay? This is not just any project. Designing is my dream; I must pass this class to get my desired internship. This is my dream, and I can't take a risk with some rookie."
"Excuse me, don't talk to me like that! I'm your teacher, and you can't talk to me like that!"
The boy chuckled at the teacher.
"What is your problem?" He asked the teacher.
"What do you mean?" The teacher asked.
"Don't play dumb, Mr.Bloom."
"You are such an impulsive young boy." The teacher said, shaking his head. "You will lose a good project because of your ego. If you were sensible, would you talk with so much attitude? It is useless making you understand anything."
"That's enough, old man!"
This made all the students gasp.
I even noticed a couple recording the conversation.
The boy stood up and looked the teacher straight in the eyes.
It was silent for a while.
"What do you think of yourself?" The boy asked, breaking the silence. "Do you think you can say whatever you want since you are a teacher? You are not my father or guardian. I don't find anything you say necessary to do. I don't care about your project; I am done talking to you. Speak to my father whenever you can."
After talking to the teacher like that, he picked up his binder and walked towards the door.
I hid so nobody saw me there.
After he left, the teacher stood in awe for a while, and the students talked about the drama.
I decided to head back to class after I saw the time to avoid getting in trouble.
I kept thinking about the drama in the video game design class for the rest of the hour.
It was sad to see a student talk to his teacher so disrespectfully.
He was so rude and insolent.
I hope that I never clash with that rude boy.
When I got home from school, I noticed that Grandma was the only home.
Dad was at work, and I had no idea where in the world Keisha was.
"Hey honey, how was school?" Grandma asked.
"It was okay, Grandma," I said with a sigh. "I mean, it is so different here. The people. Their lifestyle. Dressing style. Everything."
"It is okay. You will get used to it pretty soon. Don't worry. I need you to take the boxes on the table to the basement."
It was such a tiring day. I had to walk from school to home, and I didn't feel like carrying two boxes, even though they were small.
I just wanted to rest, but I am my grandma's favorite granddaughter, and I don't want to upset her.
I carried the boxes to the basement.
When I got there, I noticed a big box.
I went to that box and looked inside.
Inside that box, I saw a small trophy.
I picked it up, and it brought back many memories.
It brought tears to my eyes.
All the trophies and medals meant a lot to me, but I put all that behind me two years ago.
It's amazing how one moment is enough to change a person's life.
It took one moment to change my life forever.
Two years have passed, and my condition is not improving.
I knew that my life was never going to be the same again.
I'm just still too afraid to accept it.
While sleeping that night, I started seeing images in my dreams.
There was the crash, the screams, her voice, and sirens.
I jumped out of bed.
When I woke up, I was covered in sweat, and I was breathing very hard.
I drank water and laid back down.
It has been two years, but these dreams haven't gone away.
The incident is haunting me like crazy.
I try to put it behind me, but I know that is impossible.
It is the one incident that changed my life and broke my family apart.
Even though everybody acts normal, I know deep inside it is eating each one alive.
I want to forget it, but I can't because the person closest to my heart was in this incident.
I shake the thoughts away and stay awake for the rest of the night.
It is 3:30 am, and I know that I won't be able to sleep again if I try.
I am not always like this, but the nights I have this nightmare, it is tough for me to sleep.
I lie awake in bed, afraid to shut my eyes.
I want to sleep, but I am sick of that day.
I don't want to sleep or dream.
