Chapter 3
Bianca's POV
We dropped the other groups off at their cabins until finally it got to my group's cabin.
"Group seven," called some random park ranger. My whole group stood and walked off the bus. It pulled away, and suddenly we were alone.
"So, I guess we should go in?" Kevin asked. I shrugged. Lauren nodded, and we all entered the cabin together.
Marcus found a light switch and flipped it, causing the lights to go on and allowing us to see the place that would be our prison, I mean home, for the next week.
Lucy found the note. She picked it up and read it aloud.
"Hello students of International High! As you know, you seven will be sharing this cabin for the next week. We have given you some food in the cabinets, and some fake money to be used for buying more. But remember, you have to cook the food yourselves, and you don't have a stove. You'll have to collect wood and kindling to make a fire to cook over. Matches are in one of your drawers. The GPS that will direct you to the store and your cabin is right next to this note. Your first job opportunity will be tomorrow. Good Luck!"
"Wow," Mike said. Peter nodded.
"I guess we should figure out sleeping arrangements and then try to get a fire started," Lauren said. No one argued, so we went to check out the sleeping rooms.
I immediately knew I couldn't possibly sleep there. There were two rooms, one for boys, one for girls, full of bunk beds and grey mattresses which were covered in pollen. We tried flipping them over, but the other side was covered in dust.
"How about we just all sleep on the floor," Lucy suggested. Everyone agreed.
The next order of business was figuring out dinner. Looking in the cupboards yielded a few packages of pasta, a jar of tomato sauce, some canned soup, a box of rice, six eggs, carrots, onions, and some olive oil. Everyone in the grade knew that Lauren's dad was a chef and was teaching her how to cook, so we all looked at her.
"Alright," she said, taking charge. "The eggs we should definitely save for breakfast, so how about pasta for dinner? One package with tomato sauce should be good for the seven of us."
"Alright, but how will we cook it?" Kevin asked.
"We'll need firewood, right?" Lucy asked. "That's what the note said."
"Who's going to get it?" Marcus asked.
"I think two people should go," Peter suggested. "And how about we draw names to decide?" Everyone thought that sounded like a good idea, so Lucy found a bag and everyone wrote their name on a piece of paper to put in.
"Ok," Lauren said reaching into the bag. "The first person is Marcus."
"Hang on," Lucy said, "Will you be ok collecting firewood? I mean, with your arm and all."
"I'll be fine," Marcus said. "I've had plenty of practice doing things one-armed." He said it causally, but if you listened carefully you could hear a bitter undertone.
"Right," Lauren said. She reached into the bag again. "The other person is Bianca."
Do I never get a break? Not only do I have to tromp through the forest in search of wood, I had to do it with Marcus? I mean really! With that arm of his, he'll be completely useless! I'll have to do all the work. This is the worst field trip ever.
Marcus's POV
Maybe I should have agreed with Lucy when she said I couldn't collect wood with my disability. I was just so determined to prove I wasn't useless! But now, because of that determination, that stubbornness, I'm going to be stuck in the middle of the forest, working with someone who hates me but I just can't stop thinking about. Why, cruel world? Why?
