EIGHT
HADES TOOK THE CUCUMBER off his eye and peeked to his right hand side to check on his sleeping wife and then his eyes were drawn to his exhausted sister in law who was very invested in the popular 90s romcom, 'While You Were Sleeping'. The woman was wrapped in a cocoon of blankets and hugging a teddy bear, clutching onto a used tissue.
"What the fuck did I miss?" Hades laughed, darting his eyes between the screen and Hera. However, he was given a harsh "SHH" as a reply.
"Have you heard from Zeus?" Hera asked quietly. She hasn't heard from the man in a few days and was beginning to grow quite worried. It wasn't unusual for him to go on business trips for a few weeks and forget to inform her but something felt off.
"It's been 30 minutes Hera, no I have not heard from Zeus."
"Neither have I." A voice emitted from behind the sofas. It was the one and only Poseidon, holding a sealed brown envelope and wearing an odd sense of motivation in his eyes.
The room went quiet and all that could be sensed was Persephone's heavy breathing.
"I need to talk to Hera. Alone." Poseidon's glare was fixated on his brother.
"Anything you need to say to her you say to me, she'll tell me anyway there's no point in hiding."
"This has nothing to do with you."
"It has everything to do with me you little bitchass cunt, do you really think I trust you with her after all you've done you fuc-" Hades stood towering over his brother. This was his favourite part about his childhood. Being physically superior in fights.
"Hades." Hera held him back, "it's okay. I'll be fine." She squeezed his arm reassuringly and left the room, with Poseidon following her.
"I'm concerned about Zeus." Poseidon started after Hera shut the bedroom door. "I haven't heard from him in days. I know how much he means to you - "
"Well obviously, he's my husband." Hera brushed Poseidon off. His behaviour was unusual.
"I'm just saying, no one from the office has heard from him and he isn't in the best place right now. Not with all this publicity and your loss."
"Which are both your fault."
"If something were to happen to him, which I fear has, someone needs to take over as CEO and you're under qualified." Poseidon's tone was soft and carried a weight of grievance. He began to take papers out of the brown envelope.
"So you want me to sign the business over to you?" Hera scoffed.
"I only get it if something does happen. Just, think about it." Poseidon left the papers on her bed and left the room. He saw a flashing coming from the office and sourced it to the fax machine. He pressed the voice mail button and Zeus's voice emitted from the box.
"Hey Hera, im uh, I'm not dead. I'm just on a business trip which was really last minute. Believe me I didn't want to leave you like this but it had to be done, these next few meetings could be so bene-" boring, Poseidon thought before he deleted the messages.
Hera stared at the papers and read through the contracts a few times. If she did this, she'd own nothing. If Zeus is truly dead. She'd lost everything and Poseidon had won.
Poseidon left the house, pulling out a picture from his wallet. It was old and taped together several times. The figures in the photo were none other than teenage Hera and Poseidon. At their homecoming dance in high school. Poseidon traced Hera's face before turning to look at her bedroom, who's light had just turned off.
"None is this would've happened if you just stayed with me Hera." He sighed walking away from the mansion.
Hades didn't check on Hera before he left the house with his wife in his arms, bridal style. As he drove home he felt a pit in his stomach grow deeper and deeper as he drove further and further. A voice telling him he was wrong getting louder and louder.
Hera clicked her pen as she read through the contracts one last time. It's been a few days since she had heard from Zeus and the man isn't exactly loved within the industry. The authorities were alerted but this couldn't be a terrible decision. Poseidon had worked along side Zeus for decades.
As Hera's pen touched the paper, her door swung open. "The traffic was so fucking bad is there a concert or something?" Zeus entered the room with his bags in hand. Heras jaw dropped. "What did I do now? Oh-" the bags also dropped to the floor to accommodate the petite woman into his arms. "Hera I cant breathe, are you crying?" He wiped the tears from her eyes before she stepped back, collecting herself.
"I- I thought you were dead or something I don't-" she managed to say between deep breathes.
"I was gone for 4 days you're so dramatic, I left a voice message to the fax? What are those papers?" Zeus went to pick the papers up however Hera stuffed them into a drawer before he could.
"They're nothing to worry about, I didn't get the fax message but it doesn't matter you're here and you're with me and it's fine." She huffed before smiling at Zeus.
Zeus cautiously approached Hera before hugging her one last time and kissing the top of her head. "I'm going to go have a shower, you put something nice on. We'll go out for dinner today, how does that sound?" He muttered to her, eyeing the envelope on the bed. The address reading 'Poseidon Olympus.'
That bastard.
