Chapter 21
AN: This is not where I was planning for this story to go, but here we are.
Jack looked up at the door, surprised. He glanced at Katherine, who seemed just as perplexed as he was.
"You expecting someone?"
She stood, shaking her head. "It must be some of the boys." She opened the door and came face to face with a couple who looked to be in their mid-30s, and neither of them looked happy.
"This is the Kelly residence?"
Katherine nodded slowly, and Jack stood up, motioning for Louis to stay seated behind him. "Can I help you with - ?"
They cut her off, brushing her aside and letting themselves in.
"Who the hell are you?" Jack demanded, but they ignored him. Louis had gone pale.
"Louis Anderson, what do you think you're doing?" The woman's gaze was set on the teenager, who was still seated on the couch.
"Ma... Pa..." He stuttered, looking utterly terrified. Katherine quickly made her way over and set next to him, determined to not let these people touch him. He grabbed onto her arm, and she let him.
Jack was still standing in front of who they now understood to be the Anderson's. Katherine was worried that arguing with them would take its toll on him mentally, but if he had thought about that, he obviously didn't care.
"Listen, I dunno what you folks think you're doing here, but this is our home, and you don't have the right to just - "
"He is our son!" Louis's father practically shouted. "We could have you arrested for kidnapping!"
Jack was trying to keep his temper in check. "It ain't kidnapping if he came willingly."
"He wouldn't willingly come to live with two strangers."
"They're not strangers!" Louis blurted out before he could help himself, and his father glared at him.
"They're as good as! You've known them for what, five months? We raised you!"
"Not very well." Katherine muttered under her breath, quietly enough that only Louis could hear, and he gave her a small smile, which she returned.
"Maybe I haven't known him as long as you, but I know him better than you ever will. I know he's scared to go back to you. Scared you'll force him back into treatment for no reason."
"That's one thing he got right." The woman looked at her son. "We've made an appointment with that Dr. Miller, the one who was treating you before the institution was shut down. You're sick, and you need to get better."
Louis froze at the name of the doctor, and Katherine put a firm arm around his shoulders. She hadn't realized how bad his situation was.
"The only thing he's sick with is pneumonia, and you didn't even notice." Jack accused. "All you care about is fixing things that ain't even broken."
The Anderson's seemed taken aback by this information, and they gave their son a once over, trying to find any symptoms, but in the end, clearly resolving to ignore them.
"He seems fine to me." His father said decidedly. "Come on now, Louis, we're taking you home."
Louis was clearly panicking, so Jack answered for him. "He's not going anywhere."
"He can answer for himself." Mrs. Anderson said. "Louis, come."
The boy's entire body tensed up, but he managed to get out a quiet, "No."
"What?" His father didn't except this answer, and Katherine stood after giving Louis a reassuring squeeze around the shoulders.
"He said no. Now leave, or I will get you arrested for trespassing."
She stared them down with a cold glare, and they watched her for any signs of wavering, but there were none. Mrs. Anderson let out a frustrated noise, and her husband was clearly outraged.
"Fine. But we're suing."
They turned and stormed out.
