-Chapter 1-
"Para!", ordered an officer (Hold it!) as she saw the sixteen year old looking boy sprint out from the ridge of the Rio Grand River which she and her partner were patrolling. The boy didn't listen he was frightened as he heard her.
"Damnit! He's running! Katherine I've got a runner headed up stream your way!", radioed the female officer sprinting to catch up. But this boy was in his prime time. With his bare wet feet hitting the sand and legs getting cut by the sharp grass that whipped at his shins.
He wasn't going to stop. He wasn't....he had made it over....he had made it over! He was on American soil! He wasn't going to leave.
"Señor, le ordeno que se pare !", repeated the officer. (Sir I am ordering you to stop!)
Her partner was right at her heels hand on her pistol. If there was one there could be more, who knows what they could run into. The scouts must've missed this one big time as he swam across. Either he could hold his breath for a really long time or he was just damn lucky.
"Katherine I have a runner-", Louisa stopped mid-sentence seeing the runner thirty feet away get smashed into.
I barreled into the kid running down the slope and pinned him down cuffing his wrists together speaking, "Lo siento , pero ella le ordenó que se detuviera, pero no escuchastes . Es un crimen no obedecer a un oficial y más, cruzar la frontera de manera ilegal". (Sorry, but she ordered you to stop and you didn't listen. Its a crime not to listen to an officer and cross the border illegally)
I got off him and pulled him up. He began to speak frantically wanting to reason, "¡no! ¡No! Por favor, no me envíe de vuelta! ¡Por favor! ¡no! Tengo familia aquí! ¡por favor no!" No! No! Please don't send me back! Please! No! I have family here! Please don't!) he cried.
He pulled trying to run making me turn and widen my stance pulling him back the way he had come. He kept trying to pull away and escape even stepped on my foot. I pulled it back, "Damnit! Shit!", I shouted as he did that. But I held him as he tried to get away again locking my arms under his arm pits. He thrashed crying and kicking.
"Get his legs! Get his legs!", I said.
"Quieto ! Esto no te sirve de nada ! ¡Cálmate! ¡Detente ahora mismo!", yelled Louisa (Hold still! You arent helping yourself! Calm down! Stop right now!) snagging his ankles tightly in her hands after a few attempts. He didn't listen though, just kept at it.
I locked my fingers behind his head as he thrashed to keep him from moving anymore than he already was. He kept moving about trying to break free. Normally most would be silent and weren't so rebellious since they knew they were in trouble and they couldn't get out of it easily if they had already been caught.
Another pair of border patrol officers came with a car. Two male officers stepped out. Larger than the kid immediately trying to calm him down speaking in the native language to help us get the situation under control. He was loosing his strength to exhaustion and eventually gave in panting and crying. The quarter mile swim and hundred yard sprint through the sand path of stones and swatting grass had tired him.
Now the questions were asked, "Necesitas agua?", I asked. (Do you need water?)
The boy shook his head, "No, no Señora", he stammered. (No, no Mrs)
As stupid as the next question sounded since I had tackled him, it was mandatory to ask, "Estás herido?", I asked afterwards. (Are you hurt?)
He glanced at me and shook his head, "No, no Señora, solo estoy cansado", he replied. (No, no Miss, I am only tired)
"Viniste con alguien más ?", I asked. (Did you come with anyone else?)
"No, no Señora, yo no vine con nadie , yo vine solo", replied the boy. (No, no Miss, I didn't come with anyone, I came over alone)
I sighed standing up from my knee, "Thanks boys", I said.
The officer smiled hoisting him up off the ground, "No problem Kathy", said the officer. He looked me up and down, "He must've given you a hard time", he laughed.
"Other way around", I said twirling my finger. He laughed shaking his head, "Good catch", he said.
"Come, let's get him back", said the officer.
I turned to Louisa and went towards her dusting myself. "You have sand in your hair", teased Louisa.
"Really?", I huffed at her bending over. And pulled out my bun which was now no longer tight and proper. I grumbled shaking it seeing the dust of sand bits fly around. I pulled it back up putting it in a messy bun. I'd fix it later.
"You nailed him good", laughed Cassidy.
"He nailed my fucking foot", I said shaking my right one. It still hurt and I was pissed.
"You want to get it checked out?", asked Louisa.
"No, I'll get over it. I'm not limping", I replied.
"Where did we park the car again?", asked Cassidy scratching her head turning and looking around. I waved for them to follow, "It's not far, come on this way", I said walking passed her.
"Your crazy Chica", said Louisa.
I stuck my tongue out at her smiling, "Come on, you're both slow!", I said walking off.
