-Chapter Two-
I drove the car. I always did. Louisa and I were partners. However, she and Cassidy were gay. They were together, Cassidy was with us today even though it was her day off. She asked if she could join our shift as usual and, as usual it wasn't a bad thing to have her along. They kept their relationship out of the work zone.
Everyone knew, some criticized, others didn't believe it since they didn't express it during their work hours. Others who knew didn't bother with it because it wasn't their business to bother with it. They did their jobs and we all look out for each other.
I followed along the dirt road next to the Rio Grand watching the water and the brush of plants. In case there was anyone. But most came at night. My night shifts were on Fridays and Mondays. The rest of the time I had day shift with Tuesdays and Saturdays off.
Louisa poked me, "Look who's there chica", she teased.
"Hm?", I asked chewing gum and tilted my head looking down the road.
"Chica! He's right there! Right there!", said Louisa pointing across my line of vision.
"Hey!", I said pushing it back.
There was an officer standing at his truck and I slowed intending to pass by but he raised his head hearing the car.
"Look he's waving you over! Stop the car chica!", said Louisa.
"Will you quit it! I'm pulling over calm down!", I said shaking my head but I was smiling.
I put the car in park slowing and lowered the window as he spoke to the small child who was wet and holding a water bottle. I could see his partner interrogating the smuggler who had likely taken him across the river. Inexperienced and new likely to the occupation.
Officer Chad smiled, "Well, isn't this nice, I was wondering when someone would be driving down", he said.
He looked at little frustrated, "I ran out of information sheets, do you have any I could borrow?", he asked.
"Only if you-" "Yeah, hold on", I said turning around and glaring at Cassidy who really didn't like her plan being spoiled by my interruption. "You need the Adolescent one I'm assuming?", I asked pulling out a sheet which was filled with columns and tables and boxes to check.
Officer Chad smiled looking at the child who was looking at both of us with large wide eyes his lips on the bottle cap. He had a towel over his shoulders. "Yeah....", replied Officer Chad. He managed a small smile.
I extended it to him and he took it putting it on his clipboard. "Good day?", he asked.
"Generally", I replied. "You?", I asked.
Officer Chad smiled, "Generally alright", he replied. I nodded, "He's a sweet one", I said look at the child and waved. The kid blinked and raised his hand timidly looking up at me.
"¿Estás bien?", I asked looking out the window. (Are you alright?)
The child nodded.
"Este hombre tendrá buen cuidado de usted , no se preocupe", I assured smiling. (This man will take good care of you, don't worry)
The child blinked nodded and managed a small smile of understanding and seemed a bit more relaxed. Officer Chad smiled understanding that. He sighed, "Well, thank you, I won't keep you", he said.
"Oh no! We aren't in a hurry! Don't worry!", said Cassidy before I could say no worries, anytime.
She had beaten me to it. Officer Chad chuckled, "You have the night shift tomorrow correct Officer Klein?", asked Officer Chad.
"She does", replied Louisa.
"You can call her Kathy, everyone calls her Kathy", teased Cassidy.
Officer Chad laughed he was put in an awkward position but he side stepped, "I was moved to Friday night shifts, I was just curious to see who else would be out Friday evening", said Officer Chad.
"I'll be there", I replied.
He smiled stepping back, "I've got to get back to this one, stay safe", he said waving.
I waved a small one back at him, "You too Officer Chad", I replied and waved again at the child driving forward continuing on.
I rolled up the window, "Chica!", groaned Louisa shaking her head.
"What?!", I asked.
"He was going to ask you!", said Cassidy.
"Seriously you two? What is it with you both wanting me to hook up with him?", I asked.
"You like him chica! And he likes you! He said stay safe!", said Louisa.
"Everyone on the patrol and in law enforcement says that", I replied.
"He really likes you! You can tell in a man! I see it chica!", said Louisa.
"At least they are both on night patrol now", said Cassidy shrugging.
"Work date", said Louisa
I wagged my finger back and forth, "No, no, no! I may like him, but oh no! Work is not the place!", I said.
"He needs a woman chica! Someone to hold, someone to hold him! You need to tell him before it's too late!", said Louisa.
I laughed, "Pulling that card on me now", I said. "We are serious chica! You are doing dangerous work, Cassidy and me have each other and you.....need to have someone too. Yes we are your friends......but you need an amor", said Louisa.
"Okay, okay I get it", I said starting to get annoyed.
"You never know what can happen", said Cassidy.
"I get it Cassidy, I get it", I said smiling.
They both only meant the best as friends. That's why I adored them. They were good friends. Ones who would stick with you no matter what happened.
