-Chapter Three-
I pulled into the driveway putting the car in park and turned off the engine that same evening. Cassidy and Louisa got out getting the groceries from the back and I shut the driver's door yawning.
"Long day, long day", I yawned.
"Haven't we all had a long day?", asked Louisa.
"Yup", replied Cassidy kissing Louisa on the cheek.
She smirked hitting Cassidy's butt in response making her jolt. It was their way of flirting. I smiled rolling my eyes. I didn't care. They respected that I wasn't lesbian. What they really respected was that I didn't mind sharing the rent with them despite their love interest. It made me uncomfortable sometimes I'll admit, if I walked in and they were making out on the couch. But they would immediately stop. They were kind and didn't want to make me feel awkward. Never had either of them tried anything either. They loved each other and I was their buddy in between.
Sure I get looks at work for conversing with them sometimes or being associated with them for those who knew and didn't approve. There would always be such people. Yet some opinions must be accepted and respected.
I walked into the house setting the keys in a counter drawer sitting down and taking off my boots.
"Chica go shower before you dust everything up!", called Louisa from the kitchen.
"On it! On it!", I replied untying my laces and pulled off my work boots setting them on the shoe rack. It was 8:30 already. I was tired. Yet I knew Louisa was hygiene fanatic and completely neat person. So do what the woman says!
I finished just as Louisa yelled through the halls, "Chica! Dinner's ready!".
"Coming!", I called drying my hair with a towel and dropped it over my broad shoulders exiting before she could call again. Louisa was like the mother of the group. She always cooked, she would not have it any other way. She was head strong and tough of Mexican descendant. Her parents had come over legally in 1991 when she was ten.
Cassidy and me, well we were both from Texas. Now living in Nuevo Laredo in the law enforcement career. Cassidy was originally from Galveston. Both Louisa and Cassidy didn't have supporting families within their relationship. Louisa's family were conservative and devoted Catholics and utterly were discontent with the idea that their daughter was having an affair with a woman.
I smiled sitting down at the wooden table in the dinning room next to the kitchen. I reached to start as greedy as I was when Louisa snapped, "Hey! We say grace first!", she warned.
"Oh! Sorry!", I replied apologetically looking at her. She rolled her eyes sitting down herself at the head of the table. The cook always sits at the head of the table in this household. She extended her hands to both of us motioning for us to hurry up.
I took it with my left and Cassidy's with my right reaching over the table. Louisa and Cassidy closed their eyes as Louisa began to speak. I peeked looking at them both as Louisa spoke,
"Dear Lord, we are gathered here tonight thanks to you. You protected us again and kept us out of harms way. You let us catch those who were trespassing and I pray you will help them learn the right way of doing things. And may our brothers and sisters who are working the night shift be protected by your grace and that you show mercy on those over the Rio. Let the drug dealers see justice and that you protect those who are struggling tonight, and thank you for all you've done for us. For the family. Friends and another night together. Amen",
"Amen", Cassidy and I said in unison.
I wasn't much of a religious fanatic. Christian. Believe in God. I don't go to church except for Easter and Christmas time since I work on Sundays. Louisa though goes every Wednesday, and Sunday with Cassidy. Still devoted and loves everyone she still goes to church from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Reads the bible on her night stand and is a perfect gal. A genuine gal. Cassidy goes because she loves Louisa and wants to show her support. It's become a part of her life. They've been together three years now. At first it was just Louisa and Cassidy who were looking for another partner to pay and share the rent.
I took the offer and the first thing they said to me was that they were a couple. That's what had turned several to decline, I'll admit my face was a bit surprised but you get used to it. And I thought it over, taking the offer. It's been two years since then.
Besides Louisa was a damn good cook!
Me....I tended to burn everything anyways.
