-Chapter Nine-
Officer Chad drove down the town road. He was going down passed the line of shops at the center square. People were out and about and cars slowed not wanting to get pulled over. Some glanced at the large border patrol police car.
"Look, there's a first timer in there", said Officer Chad smiling.
After years of experience we had talent for telling which one's were the new drivers.
"Be nice, your putting him on edge. He has a mother to deal with, I think that's enough", I said.
Officer Chad raised his hands up, "I never said I was going to pull him over", he said defensively.
I rolled my eyes, "Sure....whatever you say", I said pretending to be annoyed.
"Alright now your making fun of me", he said.
"What? I can't poke fun at you for pulling over twenty two teenage drivers in one half a week?", I asked.
He laughed, "It was the beginning of summer. Plus I was doing my job, what were you doing?", he tested.
I shrugged, "Work", I replied.
"Uh-oh is your memory failing you now?", he asked teasing and drove forward crossing an intersection.
"What street did we just pass and what was the one we turned off -",
"Oh no! Not this again!", I objected. Observation, great! I was not paying attention!
"So...what street did we pass and which one did we turn off of?", he asked.
I frowned, "I don't know!", I confessed.
I really didn't, I was too busy listening to him rather than paying attention to the signs. Besides, I was supposed to be off work. Officer Chad smiled.
"Hey red light", I said.
Officer Chad slammed on the brakes just in time. I jolted forward slightly coughing. Down went the bubble gum.
"Way to be observant", I coughed picking up my sunglasses.
Officer Chad was a bit embarrassed as I sat up setting my shades on top of my head.
"You okay?", he asked concerned.
"Yeah, I'll be good", I said.
"You swallowed your gum didn't you?", he asked.
"Well, yeah, better that than on your dash board", I replied.
He chuckled uneasy, "I think I could have handled cleaning that up, maybe donuts isn't really the prime thing to go eat now", he said pulling over. He was smirking. I knew what he was thinking.
"What? What oh no! I just swallowed gum and now you are going to make me go run and check the streets!?", I exclaimed.
"We have time, go, go, you have five minuets", he said.
"No! I am not going all the way back there to read a sign", I objected.
I pulled out my i-phone about to unlock it but Officer Chad snatched it.
"Eh-eh.....that's cheating", he warned.
I gaped at him and groaned. He was serious. Seriously enjoying himself.
"Ugh! Fine!", I grumbled pushing open the car door.
"Five minutes!", he called.
"Oh be quiet!", I shouted back jogging away.
I made my way through people carefully. Boy was it far. I made it to the street. I turned after reading Fredrick's Rd. I stared at the side walk. Great it's up hill. Knowing Officer Chad he was really keeping time. He was just that kind of guy. And if I didn't make he would rub it in. I huffed picking up my legs.
This guy...he's nuts. But he's so damn cute!
I made it back up to see Officer Chad looking at his watch. He was really timing me.
I made it back breathing heavily. Running, first down then up hill, and totaling to three quarters of a mile. Not easy in five minutes.
I pointed back, "First....Fredrick's.... road....", I raised my finger for him to wait catching my breath.
I pointed to the intersection. "San Ann...road", I breathed out.
I looked up, "What'd I get?", I asked.
Officer Chad smiled looking up guilty of something.
I turned putting my hands on my head, "You...aw you! You cheated me!", I said.
"Well you were the one who ran off on me though we were already here", he said.
I turned my head seeing a donuts shop. The open sign was blinking and flashing the red and blue neon strips of lights. I grumbled smiling.
"We both know that, that's not true", I said still trying to catch my breath.
I wagged a finger at him, "You owe me", I said standing up.
He laughed, "Well, then let me buy you a donut", he said.
"More like a dozen", I corrected.
