-Chapter Twenty Seven-
Chris hung up finishing the call from Louisa. He swallowed hard. Eric looked at Chris from his papers and from taking notes about what Chris had told him about the incident. It all seemed like it just happened out of the blue. Nothing new was discovered and at home the chief was likely asking officers themselves.
It was going to take days to get through them all. Chris knew this. But likely none of them knew anything either. They knew who Klein was. As a co-worker and fellow law enforcement officer who had their back. Chris was sure that they were all just as frustrated as well.
It hadn't even been twenty four hours which technically per US law wouldn't define someone as missing. That would be forty eight hours. Here though, the kidnapping had been witnessed, that changed everything.
Chris didn't like waiting, he utterly despised it. He was trying to think of anything. Of anything. Anything that could hint at the fact that Klein was threatened or endangered. He was trying to think of who it could be out of the list that Eric had arranged and given to Chris as he sat at that long table in silence.
Sometimes Eric would be in the room scratching his head and pacing while muttering in spanish to himself. Other times he would leave and go do his other duties. Chris knew he had other obligations. But wasn't he assigned to this case? Meaning this was where his focus was supposed to be, right? Chris didn't like this.
Chris sighed fingers on his chin and he tapped his tight lips breathing out in disgust and frustration at the files. As well as himself. He couldn't pin point who. And just reading about the backgrounds and criminal charges these men had coming for them once they were caught made his stomach turn. All were charged with drug, theft, murder, some sexual assault, others rape and numerous forms of fraud and illegal activities.
Chris would stare at each picture for a good fifteen minutes or more trying to see if he got some sort of vibe, or feeling from just looking at it. But from all of these guys it was just giving him the same feeling. The same emotional feeling of worry.
He set down the file letting it slip out of his hands onto the table. He blinked looking up and stared at the light on the ceiling blinking back tears. He didn't want anyone walking in to find him crying. It could arouse suspicion. It was a miracle the chief actually let him onto the case and help investigate. Even despite the fact that he was aware of the relationship itself.
As long as they kept it out from inhibiting their work effort and ability to perform the chief would allow it. Technically he couldn't say no. But there were a few legal complications between co-workers dating.
Yet that Chris was here meant that his chief trusted him.
But he was worried sick. His mind was racing and jumping to conclusions about the worst that could happen. Here he was sitting with just a bunch of files about terrible, terrible people. That's all he had. No leads, no nothing. Plus he was working with people he didn't have a clue as to who they were or about who to trust.
Chris blamed himself. He should have gotten there faster. He should have swam over, God willing he would have made it over! Chris was pissed. He put his hands on his head. They were getting nowhere with this. Something had to pop up. Something at the very least! Something small!
At the very least a ransom call. At the very least..something to prove that Klein was still alive.
