-Chapter Twenty Eight-

Hours went by....hours which turned into days...and more days. A week. Still Rogers had gotten no news. There were no further updates. Everyone on the home front was sifting through everything. Every case file. Every pick up. Every single damn report that Klein wrote!

But nothing! Nothing pointed to anything!

Louisa and Cassidy had opted to stay in Chris's house. Cassidy couldn't deal with the fact that Klein was not there. Louisa was having difficulty holding it together as well.

During the day Rogers would see them driving and walking up and down the river. As if hoping to find something. Something important that was left behind. But they were always sent home. They stayed close to the river though in the parks sitting on benches.

Rogers came home again as usual late at night. He knew his kids were sleeping. He entered the house shutting the door as best he could hearing the screen door creak behind him.

He'd go into the kitchen and pop open a bottle of beer. He drank more than he usually did now. One a night. Miranda would be sitting on the couch reading the newspaper. Either to receive updates on the case and what was going on politically.

Rogers sat down next her. Miranda set down the newspaper. She had been looking at the missing person's photo. It was on the fourth page now. Used to be on the first page. Right on the front. A picture of Officer Klein and a detailed overview. Then what had happened and the number to call.

But it was worthless to distribute here. Here you just got a bunch of nut jobs thinking they could get reward for giving information that they actually didn't know, or it was complete bogus because they yearned for attention in the spotlight.

"Anything?", asked Miranda.

"No", replied Rogers taking a drink.

"They'll find her sweetie", said Miranda.

"Yeah but when? When? When it's too late?!", snapped Chris raising his voice.

Miranda was silent.

"I'm sorry....it's just...", his voice trailed off and Rogers scratched his beard.

"How are Louisa and Cassidy?", asked Miranda.

"Holding up...managing. They are staying at Chris's place. He's still over there", said Rogers referring to Mexico.

"Does he have anything?", asked Miranda.

Rogers shook his head, "No, he's as stuck as we are", said Rogers.

"I'm sorry sweetie...", whispered Miranda stroking his shoulder.

"Sweetie...you need to go tell Tessa happy birthday", said Miranda quietly.

Rogers kicked himself, "Oh shi--damn it!", he said correcting himself.

Rogers set the beer bottle on the coffee table having only drank a little. He stood wiping his hands on his trousers. He groaned, He didn't have a present. He had forgotten to pick it up.

"Sweetie", said Miranda.

Rogers looked at his wife who was pointing at a wrapped present on the kitchen counter. He kissed his wife, "Thank you", he said.

"You're welcome, now go. You already missed her party today", said his wife. That too...

Rogers sighed taking the small box in his hands. He knew what it was. It was small enough for his large hand to take in one. So he went down the small corridor.

First he went to his four year old son, Ben. That squirt was already fast asleep. Holding the plastic Kylo Ren lightsaber in his arms and sleeping with it. Rogers smiled setting the present down and removed the toy carefully. He kissed Ben's forehead.

"Sweet dreams squirt", he whispered and took the present heading out of the room going to the next one after closing the door just a crack.

In the next bed room he entered to find Tessa reading. She was nine now. Five year difference. Happens. She heard her door open and raised her head.

"Hi daddy", she said quietly smiling.

"Hey Tessa, how are you?", he asked quietly smiling back.

"Okay", she replied.

"I know I had to work....and I'm sorry for not making the party...but happy birthday...", he said.

Tessa crawled out from under her covers sitting on the edge of the bed with Rogers and legs tucked underneath her as she took the present opening it.

Her little brown eyes lit up with glee as she saw the small jewelry box with horses on it. Tessa opened the lid to hear a small tune play and the tiny figurine of a rearing horse begin to turn. She giggled happily and Rogers eyes softened.

Tessa closed the box and looked up at Rogers. Her eyes soft and looking at him.

"Daddy", she whispered.

"Yes Tessa?", asked Rogers quietly.

"Kathy didn't make it to the party....is she okay? She promised she'd come", said Tessa.

Rogers winced, he swallowed, "Well...Tessa...um...", he looked back.

"Don't tell your mother I told you this, okay?", asked Rogers.

"Pinky swear", said Tessa raising her little finger.

"Alright good, pinky swear", said Rogers interlocking his large finger in her small one.

Rogers sighed putting his hands on the bed, "Well...Tessa, Kathy has gone missing...she was taken by some very bad people", said Rogers.

Tessa was silent and then spoke which surprised Rogers with what she had to say, "That's why you work later now isn't it Daddy? Your trying to find her?", asked Tessa.

Roger nodded, "Yeah....yeah...we're all trying to find her", he replied.

"Can I help?", asked Tessa.

Rogers swallowed and he put his hand on his daughter's cheek, "No, sweetie... my boss wouldn't allow it", he replied.

Tessa pouted and then she looked up, "You haven't been able to find her have you?", asked Tessa.

Rogers swallowed nodding his head, "Right...we haven't been able to sweetie. But if Kathy was here, I know she would have been at the party and she wouldn't have missed it for the world. She's was just taken by bab people... and I'm sure that if she heard you say what you just told me she'd tell you what a wonderful person you are".

Tessa looked up, "Daddy...why can't you find her?", asked Tessa.

"Because we don't know where she is or who has her", said Rogers.

"Daddy...but isn't there always something? You tell me there's always something. There's always a reason for everything...and a warning...whether it was good or bad. Sometimes it takes a while to think it through", said Tessa.

Rogers stared at his little girl. She was right.

"There's a reason....and a....warning", he whispered.

Rogers smiled at Tessa. He kissed her forehead, "Alright sweetie, time for bed big girl", he said.

"Okay daddy", said Tessa getting back under the covers.

She turned tucking her hands under her head and took her small stuffed white pony, "Night daddy, I love you", said Tessa.

Rogers smiled closing the door leaving it open just a crack, "Night sweetie, I love you too. Happy birthday big girl", he whispered.

Rogers turned out her light and then turned standing there in the hallway. He scratched his chin. It hit him.

Rogers rushed back grabbing his jacket and the car keys. Sure it was nine thirty already in the evening. Miranda looked up from the couch bewildered.

"Where are you headed?", she asked defensively at his sudden adrenalin rush.

"Miranda I got it! Heck! I know who the hell took Klein!", said Rogers.

"Who? Wait a second Rogers! I thought you told me you had no clue!?", said Miranda standing.

"Remember the incident I told you about the day I met Klein?", asked Rogers pulling on his jacket.

"Yes, but I thought you already told the precinct about it?", asked Miranda.

"Yeah I did tell the precinct investigators, but I think, never mind- I know that was the guy because of his shitty language and attitude!", said Rogers.

Miranda stared at her husband for several moments and then as he ket standing there as if waiting for a response, "Well, then get back there!", she yelled shooing him away
