Chapter 4

Next memory.

High school. The high school spat Iro out like she was a acidic sweet. Society didn't like her view on everything. It had tried to model her in middle school - but instead she had twisted everyone around her pinkie. Now it was hitting her, hard and fast.

The first day was the worst. There was me, with my new hair, my shy attitude, my grey, baggy sweater and jeans making me stand out - but not too much.

And then there was Iro. She marched in after me. Her dark hair still flicked colour - but society had decided that there was to be no colour in high school. It ignored me and went straight for her. Her with her bright, bold clothes and don't-mess-with-me attitude.

We were in the same form group, sitting together. Our form tutor introduced the planners, and what they did. We wrote in our time tables. Iro doodled in the extra slot.

Then the head teacher walked in. He had grey, neatly trimmed hair, and bright blue eyes. He looked like he would be fun. Oh boy, he was anything but fun.

He singled me and Iro out in a heartbeat. He paced around the whole of us to make it seem unsuspicious, but stopped behind us. Looking back, it was probably because of my hair.

But Iro was the one to suffer.

He looked over our shoulder - at my neatly written in timetable, then at hers. It was neat - but in the margins were her wonderful doodles, her beautiful creatures coming to life. His nostrils flared.

He grabbed her while she was in mid flow. "HEY-" She cut herself off, spinning in the seat. The little word made everyone go quiet and look over.

The head teacher flicked past her timetable to a certain page. He lowered the planner again, and tapped a line. "Read that." He demanded. She looked at him, hatred in her eyes, and read;

"The planner should be kept free of graffiti. But... Mr..." She looked at him. Even with the hatred in her eyes, she could still be polite.

"Mr. Lynx." He finished for her, raising a eyebrow. Now I recognized that sign as a indication he was going to get angry. But we didn't know then.

"But Mr. Lynx, it's not graffiti. It's my art." She told him.

He looked down at her. "What's your name?" He asked her.

"Iro."

"Your real name."

"Iro." Her tone was starting to sound annoyed. I silently prayed for my friend.

"Iro, listen." He spoke her word like a disguting cough-sweet. I hated him for that. I hated the fact he had just summed up the best person in my life by her name and what she had done in ten minutes. "I am the head of this school. If I say it's graffiti, it's graffiti." He paused. "Understand?"

She looked him in the eye. "I understand what you're saying, but I don't agree with it." She said evenly, eyes still full of a silent hatred.

His eyes flashed. She'd said it politely, but it was what she said that was making him mad. He had already been molded by society. He thought like most people. In his mind, what Iro was drawing was a crime.

"Stay behind after school." He told her, quiet and deadly. She opened her mouth to protest, but I put a hand on her arm. She looked at me, glared at him and shut her mouth.

He nodded. "Good." Then he turned and left the room.

And after that, the day went from bad to worse. Becuase she was the first person in the school to be chewed out by a teacher - by the head teacher - she was marked out. People watched her, to see if she was delibratly rebelous of just weird.

And she was classed as weird. In middle school, that was okay. But here? Everyone gave Iro a wide breth, and anyone who showed her any pity was socially outcast too.

First day of high school and we'd already been thrown out of society. I could tell Iro was fuming, but held it in until after the deteniton, when we were walking back. A few people were still filing out of the school. They nudged each othe and pointed at us. I guess the rumor of the girl with the starry brain and the girl with the starry hair was spreading quickly, jumping from year to year.

She raged as we walked. "It's not fair." She said. "I was just drawing. It's my planner. It says that too. The planner is property of the student. So if it's mine - why can't I draw in it? I'm not hurting anyone!"

I stayed silent. I had learnt that it was best to let her rant. But even then, I could see the colour slowly being sucked out of her. Faintly, almost unnoticeably at the time - but something had to plug up the holes, or she would deflate and be lost.

It was only going from bad to worse.

Aww.

I love Iro. She's so sweet. And rebelous.

This is reflected on the first day of my high school - I didn't get chewed out, but I know a guy who got a detention for having a little bit of white on his shoe. Plus when I joined, I guess I was the 'weird kid' which was deemed un-allowed by society. Unfair much?

And yes, to anyone who reads this as it comes out, I am updating halfway through my school day. They finally unblocked Wattpad from school, so huzzah - more updates coming your way. I'm working on other books as you read this.

What about you guys? Did you have anything weird happen on your first day of high school - whenever it was? In England it starts at eleven, but I know that in America it starts at thirteen. I'd love to hear them. The stories that is. Not the school.

Until next time,

~Glitch.
