Chapter 5
Next memory.
The first year of high school passed quickly - thank God. Of course, it didn't seem like it at the time, with every day bringing a new group of people to ignore us. But Iro wanted to go out with a bang at the end.
She took me to the same salon as before to get my hair re-dyed near the end of Year seven. The brown roots hadn't been hugely showing for a while, but it was become obvious now. We stood outside the salon for a while, while she told me her plan.
She wanted to dye her hair too.
"Why not?" She said. "I'm already socially outcast anyway. Let's do this."
I managed to convince her to wait until the end of the summer to get hers done. And mine. "The roots will show." I told her. "Just wait until the summer's over."
So we did. While most of our year went and mooched around the city, waiting for Year eight, we stayed around each others house, in each others rooms. She would plan decorate, and I would plan read, or play music. Once I helped her to design a small wall area in her room - the first wall. She gave me the brush and sat back on the bed to watch.
I swallowed. I didn't have her natural talent or confidence. So the first dab of paint to go on was blothcy. I swallowed and looked over at her. She smiled encouragingly. So I kept going.
I fogot I was painting on a wall. I forgot she was behind me, watching. I just painted, adding to her world. Once I was done, she nodded.
"I'll do your room, you do mine, okay? We'll do it over a week - we can sleep in a tent. Then at the end of the week, we go back to our room." She hardly gave me a choice. That was something I loved about her. She as so straight forward about everything. We didn't even ask our parents. I knew she couldn't with her dad, and my mum was always so busy she didn't mind.
So that was how I ended up in her room for a week of the holiday. Alone. The first day I spent just looking at the wall, trying to decide. Then, just as the sun started to set, I lay out the newspapers on her floor, and put the first bit on.
Once I did that, I couldn't stop. Purple seeped into pink and blue, then green and orange, then yellow and red... The whole spectrum of colours. Iro had to send my brother round to get me out of the room.
I showed him the plan I had come up with. He nodded. "Crazy. Like Iro then." I nodded, smiling. He got it.
I met with her back in the tent, in my garden. She had already cooked some sausages over a fire. Vegetarian. She had recently decided that she wouldn't eat meat anymre. All in all, quorn wasn't that bad. Quite nice, actually. She had buttered a roll, and placed the sausage on it with a little ketchup, then put it on a plate with some rice, and left it for me.
I smiled, rubbing my hands down my trousers. She laughed. I looked down and realized why. My hands had become streaked with a rainbow of colours, which were now streaked down my jeans. I smiled at her laugh. So light, so free, like the last year hadn't happened.
I ate the slightly-smokey food, and we lay down in the tent. I was about to go to sleep when Iro sighed.
"Tomorrow." She decided. "Tomorrow, we're not sleeping in this tent."
"Why not?" I asked her. She flicked me from inside her patchwork sleeping bag.
"Becuase it's stuffy. It's the summer. Let's sleep under the stars!" She grinned. I smiled back.
"Let's do it."
So the next day, we took down the tent and set up a area to keep out sleeping bags dry, then went back to each others houses. I continued with the mad idea I had. Iro continued with whatever she had planned.
And that night we slept under the stars. She looked so beautiful in the starlight, like she had been touched by the moon and covered in a silvery blanket. Her face was slightly turned towards me. She was asleep.
I kissed her cheek lightly, then turned over and went to sleep myself.
The rest of the week went by in more or less the same way. On the last day, Iro asked for more time. I agreed. We went on for another two before she told me she was done.
"Can I tie dye your sheets?" She asked me.
"Only if I can for yours."
"Deal."
We spent the third day dying anything we could come up with. The curtains were batiked. The duvet cover and pillow case tie dyed. The thred bare carpet on my floor was appliqued - she stiched a flying bird on.
Then we returned to our rooms.
We went to hers first. She walked in and breathed in the smell. I had put some lavender on her windowsill. Then she twirled around the room and raised a eyebrow at me.
"Well." She said. "It represents me enough."
I had splashed a rainbow of colour over every wall. Some were more fluffy, some more chaotic, sharper. But she liked it.
Then we went to my room.
Iro had created her world inside my room. A huge dragon that represented Mr. Lynx flew over one wall, destroying a village. Then a mountian in another, with a guarded village. The third wall had a ocean, with weird and wonderful creatures floating around.
The forth wall was another village, but this one was being targeted. It was a village of what she had represented herself as - the flying catty creatures. A hoard of small dragons flew around the village, some further away, some right over it.
But a single fox protected the village. It had a pelt like the night sky.
I looked around the room and held back the urge to cry. Instead I hugged her.
She hugged me back.
S-y-m-b-o-l-y-s-i-m!
Up to this chapter was all written in one day - well, night. I came up with the idea of a gay story with a gay couple a while ago, for someone's short story idea, but didn't go through with it. I then looked back at the chapter I had written but decided to change the gender.
Why? Because I a female. I relate to females more. But I've probably been publishing this. Well, I defiantly have if you're reading this.
Before the question, a quick shout out to XxPhoenixOverlordxX for informing me about apparently being somewhere in the 900's of short story - for this book. Awesome!
Do you have a friend who youu could do stuff like that with? Not nessisarly camping out and redesigning rooms - more just crazy stuff where you do things for each other. Or just crazy stuff in general. If you do... *glances at the comment section* Well, you know what to do.
Until next time,
~Glitch
