Chapter Seventeen

They steal your fate everyday

-·=»‡«=·-

- I wasn't lying -

Taehyung's POV

Kook:

Hey, you still up?

I furrowed my eyebrows, glancing down at my phone, reading the text message the just came in. My gaze shifted to the window outside, the forest around us pitch black. What was he doing up at this hour? It was twelve, shouldn't he be resting?

Me:

Yeah, why? Shouldn't you be asleep?

His reply was instant, my phone lighting up my face in the darkroom. I sighed, running a hand through my hair as I read the next, a small smile slowly twitching up onto my face.

Kook:

Me? Sleep? Nah. I'm nocturnal.

Me:

Humans aren't nocturnal, Angel.

Kook:

Maybe I'm not human then.

I laughed, hearing my friends stir in their sleep, my eyes narrowing onto them. Jimin rolled over, groaning a bit in his sleep and Namjoon just threw his leg out from under the covers. I slowly stood up, leaving the room and heading towards the couch.

Me:

As if. So, why did you ask if I was still up?

Kook:

You down to go running?

I furrowed my eyebrows, glancing outside again. Running, at this hour? And where? I glanced around, thinking of a way to respond. Say yes, or no? I groaned, standing up from the couch and grabbing a shirt that was laying around on the floor.

Me:

Meet you at your place in ten.

The conversation ended after that, my phone shoved into my sweatpants pocket, my eyes narrowing in the dark packhouse we called ours. I jogged outside, the cold fall air hitting my skin. I pulled my shirt over my head, running through the woods and heading for the street.

I was running down the sidewalk to Jungkook's loft in no time, my legs burning as I ran. It felt amazing. I reached his loft quickly, coming to a stop and knocking on the door. When the lock clicked and the door opened, I smirked, leaning against the wall.

"So, running?" I questioned, seeing him nod, putting a jacket on. His eyes scanned over what I was wearing, a frown placed onto his features. "Do you need a jacket? I have extras." I shook my head, grabbing his hand and pulling him out of the loft.

"Where are we going?" I asked, walking down the sidewalk with him, his hands shoved into his jacket pockets. "School," He teased, his eyes meeting mine. I stifled a growl, rolling my eyes and sighing aloud. "You want to go to school to run? What?"

"Yeah. There's a gate at the end of the practice field and it's always unlocked, we can get in." I rolled my eyes again but smiled this time, picking up the pace of my walk. When we stumbled upon the school, we slowly made our way around the back, heading towards the fields the school owned.

"This way," He said, jogging towards a fence, pulling his hood over his head. I followed, jogging right behind him, reaching the gate he had mentioned. He pushed it open, creaking heard as I slowly opened up for us. I laughed in disbelief, his eyes meeting mine.

"So, you like running?" I questioned him, seeing him nod, walking with me towards the track. "I do. I used to be in track when I was in elementary school. I stopped when I entered middle school," He explained, pointing to the track.

"Why's that?" He shrugged, stopping on the track, back faced towards me. "Got involved in a lot more than I needed to. Hoseok's life became mine and I was stuck in the middle of it. I told you, I was forced to grow up earlier than most. While most kids my age were still playing with toys or going out to birthday parties, I was trying to keep my friends alive."

"So, long story short, I couldn't afford to keep doing it, even if I wanted to." I frowned at his words, seeing him turn to face me, a smile on his face. "Don't worry too much about it though." I sighed, my breath seen in the night air. I walked up to him, pulling him close to me, my arms wrapping around his body.

"Do you still enjoy it?" I whispered, feeling his cold cheek rest against my shoulder. "Running?" I hummed, hearing him sigh. "If I'm honest, then yes. I really love running." I smiled, pulling away from my boyfriend, grabbing his hand and looking him in the eyes.

"Then join track." He shook his head, my hand squeezing his. "Listen to me, I'm here now. I said I'd protect you, and I will, no matter what. You don't have to worry about trying to keep yourself alive, the same goes for your friends. Jimin and Namjoon can protect them, just like I can protect you."

"You said it yourself, you missed out on doing things you loved because of the sake you were looking after others. You have two years left in high school, right? Make the most of them." His eyes widened, lips parting open in shock. I could hear his heart race, his cold fingers squeezing mine.

"Maybe you're right. I'll think about it," He said after a pause, his gaze shifting from mine to the track. "Enough of that, let's run." I smiled, pulling away from my boyfriend and heading towards the starting line that he made, standing a few feet away from him.

He stretched a bit, squatting down and getting ready to run. "We racing or what?" I asked, standing up and looking down at him. He laughed, glancing up at me. "It doesn't matter. I just want to run a lap first. Count me down." I hummed, arms crossing over my chest.

"Three, two, one, go," I announced, seeing him take off, sprinting forward. He raced around the track, slowing down once he came close to to the finish line. I smiled, taking a few steps back as he passed me, a wide grin upon his face.

"Your turn." I nodded, squatting down like he did, letting him count me down. When he did, I took off, not bothering to watch my speed as I sprinted forward. I was racing down the track, the cold wind air blowing through my hair, my legs pushing me forward at an insane speed.

When I reached the finish line, I slid to a stop, glancing up at my mate. His eyes were wide, mouth dropped open in shock. "How did you do that?" I tilted my head to the side, cocking an eyebrow up in confusion. "You sprinted faster than any human being I've ever seen. How?"

I smiled, walking towards him and planting a kiss to his forehead. "Well, maybe I'm not human then." I took a few steps back, speaking before he was given a chance to. "Race you around the track! The first one to a mile wins!" I sprinted forward, hearing him yell and chase after me.

I laughed, sprinting a little faster, managing to stay ahead of him for another lap or so. I slowed down, his footsteps getting louder as he neared me, his fist colliding with my shoulder gently. "This isn't a fair race!" He shouted with a wide smile upon his face, eyes dancing with excitement.

"No?" I teased, slowly picking up my speed again, crossing the finish line for the second lap. Two more to go. He shook his head, racing past me, his speed increasing. I gasped, watching as he sped down the track, leaving me behind. I ran after him, catching up with him and then passing him.

"I win, Angel," I whispered, walking up to him as he fell to the ground, huffing and puffing, trying to catch his breath. He looked up at me, furrowing his eyebrows. "How are you not exhausted?" I smiled, extending my hand for him to take. "I run daily."

"Really now? Where?" I shrugged, deciding to keep my mouth shut. He took I'm hand, standing up and wobbly legs. I smiled, leading him over to the massive football field, taking a seat on the school logo. "Plan on going home soon?" I asked him, seeing him sit down.

"And miss out on alone time with you? Fuck no." I laughed, finally just falling against the grass, hands behind my head as I stared up at the stars. "You know," He spoke, laying down too, still trying to catch his breath from our run.

"Nothing about you makes sense." I cocked an eyebrow, turning my head to look at him. He was staring up at the sky, a hand behind his head, another placed over his stomach. "You show up out of nowhere, you're without parents, surviving only with your friends."

I gulped, listening to him. "Suddenly I feel sparks when I touch you and I feel protected when I'm around you. You're somehow connected to your friends, even if you won't admit it. I know something was up when you predicted where they were at the mall." He finally met my gaze, his lips forming a perfect line.

"It's like you talked to them, but in your mind. You're fast, faster than any human I've ever seen before. So, tell me, what are you?" I studied his face, eyebrows are drawn in together, a look of confusion on his face. I sighed, staring at the stars.

"I can't tell you." He groaned, sitting up.

"And why the fuck not?" I glanced at him, letting the emotion drain from my face. "Because you won't believe me if I do." He gripped his hair, tugging on it and sending a glare my way, "You don't know that! Maybe you should try telling me! You never know how I'll react!"

I sighed, sitting up too, anger suddenly flooding my veins. Right, with the mate bond I feel my mate's emotions. I glanced at him, a glare sent his way. "Why do you want to know so badly?" He huffed, eyebrows shooting up with shock.

"Why? So maybe I can understand my boyfriend? Maybe I can understand why he all of a sudden shows up and why all of a sudden I'm drawn to him?!" I ran a hand down my face, my wolf growling into the connection. Anger bubbled up under my skin, my eyes meeting his.

"You want to understand?" I spat, his eyes widening at my tone. "Fine, see if you understand," I growled, his eyes widening more, a whimper escaping his lips. "Park, RM, and I showed up here because we were forced to leave our home country. If we stayed, we'd be dead."

"I was forced to relocate my friends, the only people I can call friends, to a new country just so we could have a chance to make it to our twenties! Tell me, can you relate to that? Can you relate to having a whole fucking-" I stopped, clenching my hands into fists, gritting my teeth.

"I'm a mystery, but for your sake, Jungkook, keep it that way."

He shook his head, throwing himself on me, arms wrapping around my neck. "Please. You can talk to me... I want to know. I want to be there for you, just like you've been here for me." I didn't even think, my arms wrapping around his body as we fell to the ground, my back pressed to the grass.

"I'm trying to protect you, Angel. I can't do that if you know about me," I said, whispering into his ear as he shook his head again. "No, I can protect myself too. I'm not defenseless, so please, just tell me." My mind was racing, my heart pounding in my chest. Maybe it was better if I told him, maybe he would understand.

But what if he didn't?

I sighed, squeezing him tightly, having a battle with my mind and my heart. Keep it a secret or let it out? Put him in danger or keep him safe? He hugged me tightly, whispering how he wanted to help over and over. "Please Tae," He begged, his voice cracking a bit.

"Jungkook, I want to tell you, but I just have to be sure..." He shook his head again, clinging onto me. "I'm begging you, Tae. Just, please." I nodded, kissing his cheek and caressing his lower back. "I'll tell you, I promise. Give me one more week, can you do that for me?"

"A week? You promise you'll tell me?" I nodded, kissing his cheek again. "I promise, Angel. In one week. If I don't then I give you permission to beat me up." He giggled, nodding again. "Okay. I'll give you a week. But, can I just have a hint? Something? Please?"

I frowned a bit, thinking about what I could say.

Then it clicked.

"You know how I said I wasn't human?" He hummed, nodding while his lips ghosted over my neck. I took a deep breath, holding him tightly and praying he wouldn't freak out.

"Well, I wasn't lying."
