Ch. 1
Janus sighed, watching his breath turn to mist in the cool February air.
Winter had always been his favorite time of the year. Usually it was because he could snuggle with his boyfriend. Just the two of them, holding each other. Now, though? Now it was because he could feel the stabbing of the cold on his skin, numbing all his thoughts. His friends called it self-destructive, he didn’t particularly care.
“Janus?”
Janus didn’t look up. He could already tell who that was.
“What are you doing here?! Where’s your coat?! It’s freezing!”
Janus glanced up at Logan, who was glaring down at him, shivering with his arms wrapped around himself.
They were in the middle of the park. It was sunset, and Janus was sitting at a bench.
Logan glared at him for a couple more seconds, before taking off his blue coat and holding it out to Janus. His shivering intensified, but he didn’t move to take his coat back. Janus sighed, accepting the coat.
“Don’t you have homework to do?” Janus snarked, slipping the coat on. Logan quickly wrapped his arms back around himself, sitting down next to Janus. Logan pulled the sleeves of his black sweater up a bit more to cover more of his arms, fidgeting endlessly.
“I finished it all.” Logan told him. “What are you doing here?” He asked again.
“You know damn well what I’m doing here.” Janus scoffed. He pulled Logan’s coat a little closer to his body. He hadn’t really noticed how cold it was until he was wrapped in warmth.
Logan pursed his lips. “You can’t keep doing this, Janus. You’re gonna end up killing yourself eventually.” Logan said softly, causing Janus to look away. After a few moments of silence, Logan spoke up again. “Is this about Remus--?”
“It’s always about Remus.” Janus laughed humorlessly.
“It’s been months since you two broke up.” Logan reminded him gently.
“I know.” Janus brought his knees to his chest. “I just can’t stop wondering if he’s moved on or not. If he’s still willing to wait for me.”
“I think that he’s probably given up hope on you by now. It’s almost been a year.” Logan told him honestly. “I would have, at least.”
“He’s not like you.” Janus shook his head. “He’s not like anyone I’ve ever met.”
“Do you want him back?” Logan asked.
“I don’t know if I deserve that.” Janus sighed. “He needs someone better. Someone who is willing to fight for him. Not someone like me.”
Remus deserved someone who wanted him as much as Remus wanted them.
Logan cleared his throat. “I know that, um, you don’t really like this kind of thing, but,” He sniffled, the cold beginning to make his nose run, “I got these tickets to a nature documentary viewing. I would normally ask someone else, but I get the feeling you need a bit of distraction.”
Janus stared at Logan, who was refusing to meet his eyes. He chuckled softly. “Okay.” He told him quietly.
Logan perked up a bit. “It’s tomorrow at six.” He informed him. “I’ll pick you up.”
“That’s why you’re my best friend.” He leaned his head on Logan’s shoulder.
“Because I try to distract you?”
“No, because you drive me to places without me even asking.” Janus laughed when Logan snorted. “Thanks, Lo. Really. You’re sweet.”
They sat there in a comfortable silence for a while, the both of them just staring at the sunset.
“We have school on Monday.” Logan commented idly. “Mrs. Miller is giving us a Spanish test.”
“Don’t remind me.” Janus groaned. “I barely passed the last one.” He sighed. “I’m just gonna cheat again.”
“You’re incorrigible.” Logan rolled his eyes. Janus’ face twisted up in annoyance.
“You know that I don’t know what that word means.” He grumbled. Logan laughed softly.
---
Janus blinked up at his living room ceiling.
"Janus, text us when you're leaving, okay?" His father asked from the front door. Janus didn't even glance at him, releasing a hum in response.
"Make sure you eat something, alright?" His mother asked, coming into his field of view. She brushed a piece of hair out of Janus' face, planting a kiss on his forehead.
She soon joined her husband at the door, giving her farewells to Janus before leaving.
Janus hadn't listened when they told him where they were going, maybe he should've. It was too late now, anyways.
Logan would be coming to pick him up soon. He should probably put his shoes on.
He glanced at the time on the clock.
5:09 P.M.
The viewing would be starting soon.
Ha, viewing. That made it sound like a funeral.
The doorbell rang.
Janus furrowed his brow. Sure, Logan liked to be early, but never this early.
He sighed, getting up.
"Took you long enough." Logan told him once he had opened the door, visibly annoyed.
"You're early." Janus said.
"I am." Logan nodded. "Can I come in? It's cold."
Janus opened the door a little wider, allowing Logan to come inside. "You just missed my parents."
"That's a shame." Logan hummed.
"Why are you here?" Janus tilted his head.
"I figured if I wasn't, you wouldn't have gotten up." Logan explained, sitting down on the couch. "Am I wrong?"
Janus went to deny his accusation, but went silent when he realized that Logan was probably right.
"That's what I thought." Logan chuckled. "It takes fifteen minutes to get to the theater from here, so we have some time."
"How would you like me to entertain you?" Janus asked sarcastically, sitting down next to Logan.
"We should study for the Spanish test." Logan told him. "Where is your textbook?"
Janus groaned loudly.
