NINE

(A/N: HOLY COW I HAVE NEVER CHECKED HOW MANY READS THIS HAS GOTTEN AND 1.33K?!?? THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH AHHHH. I honestly feel like this is my worst story so thank you for putting up with it 😄)

You spend the next morning wandering the camp, sending glares towards anyone who gives you a weird look. Life would have been much easier if the truth about your gender wasn't let out.

But it's too late to worry about that now.

You park yourself underneath your favorite tree, too tired to try to climb it, and start looking through the book you have. You are so absorbed in the book you don't even notice the two people standing in front of you until their shadow casts darkness on your book.

You look up to see Alex and John in front of you. A scowl crosses your face and you ask in a very annoyed voice, "Yes?" Alex meekly starts, "I just, well, I wanted to say..." he stops, looking like he doesn't want to say what comes next. He was slowly backing up, so John pushes him forward to encourage to continue.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I treated the way I did last night," he sincerely says. Pained, but sincere. He looks to John for a nod of approval that that was enough of an apology as you search his face for sincerity.

"Fine. I forgive you. But I don't care how drunk you are, you treat me, no, anybody that way again I will personally slug you in the face." You grimly stare at his face until he carefully nods, looking slightly mad but like his apology was genuine.

You close your book and walk away, not wanting to be too close to him any longer. Alex may have apologized, but you didn't trust him. Usually you don't get so angry about things like this, but Alex somehow really ticked you off. Maybe time travel messes with your temper? Maybe it's what you've experienced in the last few days?

You are writing some theories as you make your way to your tent, hoping nobody is there so you may sit in peace.

*time skip because why not*

The next day, you walk out of your tent to be greeted by one of Washington's aide-de-camps running up to you. "Miss Y/N, the General would like to speak to you." You eagerly nod and follow him towards the general's tent.

You bite you lip nervously, dozens of thoughts flashing throw your head. Why would he want to talk to you? Did you do something wrong? Are you being sent back home? You hope not because you are still working on repairing your time machine and not done with this experience.

The secretary you're waking with stops at the entrance of the tent, gesturing for you to go in. You swallow your fear (most of it, at least) and walk into the tent.

You watch where Washington is sitting at his desk and after a moment ask, "Sir?" to alert him o your presence. He looks up to you and clears his throat. "Oh yes, Y/N, please sit down." He gesture to a chair in front of his desk, so you quickly slide in.

After glancing at some papers on his desk, he looks back up to you and explains, "So, I wanted to let you know that my wife is in town. She, and a few other ladies, are staying in the town nearby and making a bunch of quilts for us. I let her know about you in my recent letter, all good things, and she invited you to go tomorrow and sew with her."

You blinked with surprise, slightly shocked but mostly elated that this wasn't bad news. Spending a day making quilts with Martha Washington didn't sound too terrible.

"Oh, uh, yes sir, I th-think I would enjoy th-that," you stutter, trying to process the news. "What time is it?"

"Ten in the morning, and they are in a house right outside of town. I can arrange for a carriage to bring you, if you'd like," he says. "Yes, I mean, please, if it isn't too much," you reply.

"It's no problem. And I'm sure she'll be glad to have you," he smiles at you. You walk out of the tent and chew on your lip anxiously, feeling excited but nervous about you plans for the next day.
