"Maybe one day, I'll be what you need. But don't wait to long... Because the day you want me may be the day I've finally given up."
I let that quote replay in my head over and over again trying to make myself feel better about the recent events that have happened over the past few days. Events that I wished I could have forgotten.
I remembered days before when he gave me hope, when he made me think that maybe things could have been worked out but he didn't want to work things out, he didn't want to fix things he wanted to leave things broken, he wanted to leave me broken... Broken and alone.
I walked down the lonesome streets with a smile on my face and sadness in my heart, I have never felt so stupid. I have never felt so lonely. I wanted someone to make me feel the way that he made me feel... Happy and alive. I wanted to be his forever and I wanted him to be mine.
As the thoughts swarmed in my head like bees in a beehive I tried to pay attention to where I was going but I didn't really know where I was going at the moment, I was lost, lost without him.
I tried to control my feelings and I tried to control my thoughts. I left my thoughts alone and tried to pay attention to my walking and the people surrounding me, I stopped and slumped myself against a old red brick wall that belonged to a store.
I remember the way that he looked with a smile on his lips and laughter leaving his mouth. I sighed and shook my head trying to get him out of it.
"One day I won't need you." I thought to myself.
After shaking the thoughts of him out of my head I realized that I was going to be late to work. I pulled myself together and left the old brick wall.
As I walked down the streets I noticed a few people passing by, it was chilly in the streets of New York, it was the end of fall and beginning of winter. The people that passed by me wore scarves and coats and everyone in a while someone would have on boots.
As I walked down the slow street it began to get colder and colder and I only wished that I didn't just wear a sweatshirt and jeans. I shoved my freezing hands into my sweatshirt pockets and tried to keep them warm, I crossed the semi-busy street and soon knew that I was close to work.
I walked faster and as soon as I saw the familiar grocery store sign I instantly became elated; not because I was going to be working but because I was now going to be warm. As I reached the automatic doors they slid open and I walked in and i was immediately greeted by the warm air that the heater above was blowing out.
I instantly walked to the back of the store and went into the one person bathroom and I checked my appearance, the mirror was dirty with smudge marks and water stains. I looked around the bathroom and noticed used paper towels on the floor and cobwebs in the corner.
I wonder what people think when they walk into the bathroom and see that it's a mess. I looked at my appearance and saw that my cheeks were flushed a deep red and underneath my blue eyes with brown flecks the bags were very prominent, you could definitely tell that I hadn't slept in a couple of days.
My long light brown hair was slightly wavy and I definitely should have brushed it before I left for work. I ran my fingers through it a couple of times trying to make it look better.
I groaned, I now knew that I looked like absolute shit. My mascara that I had put on hours before now has fallen and I had to wipe it away and try to make myself look better.
After a couple of minutes in the bathroom I finally gave up with trying to look somewhat decent. I walked up to the front of the store with a small smile playing on my lips, only so no one would walk up to me to try and conversate.
I hadn't talked to anyone in a couple of days unless you count me ordering Chinese takeout from online and asking how much I had to pay when they got to my door. I was walking to the small space in the front of the store until I noticed there was a little girl who looked to be about 7 trying to reach something on a high shelf.
I walked over to the little girl.
"Need any help?" I asked her. She jumped a little when she heard me talk, she seemed a little startled by my presence. She turned around and gave me a small nod, she pointed to a small bag of hard candy and I got onto my tippy toes and grabbed the small bag.
The little girl thanked me and walked with me to the front of the store, I walked behind the old and dusty cash register space and rung up the candy, I took out some cash from my pocket and placed it in the register. The little girl gave me a strange look but smiled and left the store.
As soon as I finished my shift I left the warm old building for the cold dark outdoors. As I started my walk home I zipped up my sweatshirt and shoved my hands back into my pockets, the temperature seemed to have dropped as each minute passed and it made me wish that I had a car.
When I got home I decided to order some pizza - online of course - after 20 minutes have passed there was a knock on my front door, I gathered up the money and opened the door and traded the money that I worked not so hard for for the amazing thing that was getting handed to me.
After eating I tried to get some sleep, when I laid down in my bed it was so comfortable like I could fall asleep instantly, I turned my bedside table lamp off and laid my head down on my pillow.
I reached down for my comforter and brought it up to my neck. I closed my eyes and silently prayed that I would actually get some sleep.
I tossed and I turned throughout the night with my eyes wide open and my mind unclear, I could only think about the way that he would hold me at night and the way he would bring his body closer to mine as he slept, I also thought about the way he made me feel... Happy;complete.
As the minutes turned into hours I became more and more frustrated and desperate. As I struggled to fall asleep I only thought about how easy it must be for him to fall asleep, how easy it is to wake up in the morning and pretend as though nothing had happened between us... Like we were nothing.
The pain that I felt was absolutely excruciating, I got out of my warm bed and walked out of my room with the lights still off. I walked to my front door and put on a pair of soft slippers that I had and I grabbed my apartment keys off of my kitchen counter.
I put my hand on the door handle to my front door and instantly remembered to grab a coat, I slipped on the coat and left my apartment, I walked down to a gas station that was only a couple of minutes away from my house.
I made my way quickly down the street, it was a lot colder than it was when I was walking home from work. It was dark out and the only light there was was the flickering street lights. I could see my breathe, there was only a couple of cars driving around.
After a couple more minutes of walking I finally reached the small gas station that was opened 24 hours. I walked into the small place and instantly smiled when I walked inside.
It was so warm and I was so grateful. The building looked brand new and I knew that they definitely cleaned it up. I noticed that there wasn't really anyone in the small area except for me, a worker and a tall guy with messy black hair.
I walked down each aisle not really wanting anything on the shelves. After a couple of minutes I walked over to the glass cases holding the drinks, I opened the glass case that stored the Arizona drinks and I quickly scoped out my favorite one and grabbed it.
I walked to the front of the store and I payed for my drink, I left the store and walked quickly to the semi-large department store that was right next to the gas station. I walked into the department store and walked into the beauty and hair section.
I walked down the long aisle and looked at the colorful boxes placed on the shelves, I stopped in the middle of the aisle and picked up two boxes of hair dye. "You would look good with that color." A unfamiliar voice said, as I heard those words I dropped the boxes on the ground.
I knelt down to pick up the boxes and when I stood up I was met by the person that the voice belonged to. I was startled and didn't know how to react because the person that was right in front of me was the guy in the gas station.
I was still holding the boxes of hair dye but now I was completely dumbfounded. On his lips was a small smirk that was smugly places. "Hi?" I asked.
"You would look really good with that hair color." He repeated, a smile crept onto my lips and I just laughed and shook my head. He picked up one of the boxes that I had put back, he brought the box up to my face and smiled, I pulled the box out of his hand and placed it back onto the shelf.
We stood next to each other in an empty silence, I didn't know what to say to this random stranger who more than likely followed me into the department store. I kept looking at the hair dyed; there were so many different colors to choose from.
They had the normal colors and then they also had the crazy colors which I was absolutely in love with like blue, I walked down the aisle and continued to look at the different brands and colors.
After a couple of minutes I had three different colors picked out so far I had a dark brown, a blue-purple, and a cotton candy pink. I really didn't know if I really want to do this... I didn't know if I want to change myself, change my appearance.
The guy was still looking at the hair dye, out of the corner of my eye I could see him glancing at me every once in a while.
A couple more minutes of silence passed by and I wondered to myself if he was going to say anything, the silence was slowly killing me and I don't really know why. Things to say we're running through my mind and I tried to find something to say that wasn't dumb. After debating on what to say I decided to stop overthinking everything and just talk to him like a normal person.
As I opened my mouth and was going to let the words spill out like water spilling out of a cup he spoke. "So what are you doing up at 3 AM?" He asked while looking at me, I tried my hardest not to look at him. I tried to distract myself with the information on the box, if I had looked at him I would've only stumbled over my words and not have been able to talk.
"Couldn't sleep, what about you?" I asked. He nodded his head and spoke some more, "woke up and wanted to go out." He said, I nodded my head slightly and grabbed another box and some how ended up knocking over a couple of other boxes in the process.
He quickly walked over to me and helped me clean up the small mess that I had made. When we got all the boxes put up onto the shelf we both stood up, as I stood up I ended up whacking my head and falling onto the ground.
I could instantly feel my cheeks flame up and I knew that my face was beat red. The guy walked back over to me and held his hand out for me, I placed my hand in his and felt a weird burning sensation that I have never felt before, he pulled me up quickly but gently.
When I got onto my feet I clumsily stumbled forward into him, he wrapped his arms around me loosely to stop me from stumbling, after he noticed what he was doing he instantly dropped his arms from around me, the fiery burning had stopped and I only thought to myself what was going on.
I could feel my head pounding, I brought my hand up to my head and I could feel a slight bump forming. He noticed and he put his hand on my head and checked it out, when he did that small action I smiled and felt my stomach flip upside down.
"I'm so sorry!" He told me while grabbing the 3 hair dyes that I had picked out, I just waved him off while telling him that it wasn't a big deal. I grabbed a box of bleach and walked with him exploring the different things in the store.
As we walked around the store we laughed and talked, "so I never got your name." He said. I laughed and shook my head. "Come on, tell me." He said with a smile forming on his lips.
"What's your name?" I asked him. "James, your turn." He said with a small grin. "Alison." I replied simply. "I like it." I felt a blush creep onto my cheeks and a smile lace onto my lips.
We continued to walk down the children's section of the store. "What time is it?" I asked. James pulled out his phone and checked the time. "4 AM." I yawned after he told me the time and realized that I should probably go home and sleep. I grabbed the boxes out of James hands and started walking away from him and to the front of the department store.
I made it to the register and placed my items on the conveyer belt. The girl behind the small register looked tired and bored out of her mind, she bagged my items and told me my total. I took some bills out of my wallet and handed them over to her "keep the change." I told her and walked away with my items.
I looked around for James but after a few moments of looking around I noticed he was standing next to the exit doors. I walked up next to him and we stood in the doorway and talked for a few minutes. We swapped numbers and walked out the doors and went into the cold darkness.
