Safety
Caia woke with a start. She, at first, was disoriented why she was in the middle of a forest. She suddenly remembered when she was jarred by Fern, who was hyperventilating next to her. That's what had woken Caia. She was worried for her acquaintance or, dare she say, friend. Caia didn't think it was possible to get paler than Fern was earlier, but she had turned a sickly gray color. She had tried to call out Fern's name, but Fern hadn't responded. Caia thought maybe Fern was asleep and tried to wake her. An extra strong jolt woke Fern up with a bang. Literally. As soon as Fern woke up, there was an audible boom surrounding Caia and Fern. Fern's eyes snapped open at the rather loud sound being emitted from the forest. Caia noticed Fern's eyes were a mix of all of the colors they were seen previously, including some colors Caia hadn't seen in Fern's eyes before, which would have been interesting, but, at the moment, Caia had more pressing matters to attend to. Fern was visibly shaking on the ground. Caia gently sat down beside her.
"You want to talk about it?" Caia asked Fern.
Fern turned to look at Caia in the eyes, Caia noticing that the color had again changed to a maroon. Fern then hung her head, looking as if she had gained twenty years of worries.
"Ten years ago, there was a war," Fern whispered.
"What happened?" Caia asked.
"Thousands of pixies were slaughtered. Some got away. The rest were captured."
"Were you captured?" Caia wondered.
"We need to go," Fern said quickly, her eyes changing color to a dark green as she straightened and looked alert. Caia sensed that Fern was alarmed, as well.
"Are you just changing the subject? Or do you-" Caia laughed, trying to ease the tension.
"Now!" Fern interrupted, not trying to hide her nervousness now.
"Okay, but what are we running from?" Caia asked, hastily sitting up.
"Let's not stay to find out!" Fern shouted, her long, straight pale hair whipping around her shoulder as she looked behind them as they started running.
Fern clapped three times, and they were sucked into a misty door as Caia heard a twig crack behind them and then the most terrifying noise imaginable; it was a cross between a lion's roar and someone screaming. All Caia remembered after that was the familiar sense of free falling.
