Explaining Hurts
I couldn't sleep. All week, I had to hide my thoughts from Issac. I didn't want anyone to know. No one could know. No one. I kept reliving it every night, and every day. I was just so confused. What girl does that thing? And to another girl? Really? What goes through their head?
"Kate," Erica yelled in my face.
I opened my eyes and sat up. She'd just woke me up from my flashback. I looked at her and exhaled.
"You kept making weird noises and started screaming," she whispered.
"Sorry," I looked down.
"You've been like this all week. What happened to you?" she asked.
I shook my head. "What time is it?"
"Two in the morning, I think," she shrugged.
"Oh," I murmured hugging my knees.
"You know I'm here for you," Erica said.
I nodded. "Just a bad week."
"Can I help? I mean...you're depressed. And you look better than that one day, but... You wanna talk about it?" she asked.
"No," I said.
"Okay, well, goodnight," she nodded and laid down.
I laid down, too, but closing my eyes was the hard part. I didn't want to relive it again. Though this was just one of those things that just couldn't be erased. No matter how much I wanted to forget. I wanted to hit my head extrememly hard and get amnesia. Anything was better than being miserable.
I finally went back to sleep. I wanted to stay in the bed--like I had been all week. But something kept telling me to get out. I showered, got dressed, and walked out of the room, hugging my cloak. I stopped in the middle of the hallway when I heard Darnellel.
"We seriously have to find out what's wrong with her," he said.
"She's been having nightmares all week," Erica said.
"She won't tell you what they're about?" Issac asked.
"Nope," Erica sighed.
"Hey, you read minds, right?" Darnellel asked.
"Yeah, but she's been barricading--"
"Does that mean you can see dreams, too?" he asked.
I didn't like where this was going.
"I've never tried it, but that sounds like a good idea," Issac said.
I turned the corner and came into view. They looked at me and faked their smiles. Their lying smiles. I glared at them and walked off. I hid my thoughts from Issac as a flash of the girl's sick, evil smile entered my mind. I went to Fay's room and knocked on the door. She opened it and looked over me.
"Look who finally came out of hibernation," she smirked.
"Hi, Fay," I rolled my eyes.
"Need something?" she asked leaning against the door.
"Do you...? I-- I just..."
"Spit it out, Kate," Fay rushed.
"Do you have anything that'll make me-- that'll erase memory?" I asked.
She looked confused as she looked me over. "Don't you think if I did, I would've used it by now?"
"You're right. I'm sorry," I let my eyes drop as I walked away.
"Wait," she called and I stopped. "Why?"
"There's just something I want to forget," I shrugged.
"What happened?" she crossed her arms.
Explaining hurts. Especially when it's something this bad. I swallowed and shook my head. Fay grabbed my arm and pulled me into her arm and sat me on her bed. Me being thrown on the couch flashed back in my mind. When she locked her door, I paled. Not her.
"Let me out!" I yelled.
"Not until I know what happened to you," she said sitting in front of me.
"Don't touch me," I backed up.
She looked me over again. "Who was it?"
I shook my head. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Was it Darnellel?" she asked.
"No!" I said louder than planned. "No. Just leave me alone."
"It was Molly," Fay whispered.
"Who?" I asked.
"Vampire. Lezbo. Blonde hair, blue eyed," she said bluntly.
I didn't say anything.
"That bitch," she whispered standing up.
"No! You can't tell anyone," I said.
"You can't keep this to yourself, Kate," Fay said.
"I have been all week," I snapped.
"You can't expect me to let Molly get away with this," Fay scoffed.
I looked down and Fay walked out. I knew Fay well enough to know she was right. She wouldn't let Molly get away with it. I just hoped that she wouldn't tell anybody. I wasn't ready to face everyone and have them look at me differently. I wasn't ready for the "I'm sorrys" and "It's not your faults."
It was my fault. I followed her, I didn't use my magic... I just kicked and yelled. With that info, anyone would think I let Molly hurt me. I may not've let her, but she did. I followed her to her house. If I had come back to the house with Darnellel and everyone else, this wouldn't have happened.
I walked out of Fay's room and went outside. I sat on the swing and looked down. I wanted to be anywhere but here. I wanted to be an Important. I wanted so much, but I wouldn't get it until later. But I didn't want to wait. There were stories about people who went to the state capital and revoked their magic.
That sounded like a good idea now.
I hadn't considered it before. But with everything that happened, I wanted out. I wanted to be like Erica. Human. I wanted to know my parents. I wanted to know if I had any other siblings. Again, so much I wanted, but wouldn't get. Not unless I ran right now.
Run, Kate! This is your chance! Go!
a voice yelled in my head.
But another voice argued back. No, Kate. You have Darnellel, Issac, Erica, and Fay. You can't just abandon them.
I wanted to disagree with the argumentative voice, but I couldn't. I had to stay for them. They cared about me. They loved me. I couldn't just drop the face of the earth for my own selfish reasons. I just didn't know what to do. I wish I did. I couldn't tell everyone what happened. Chances were, they wouldn't believe me.
Not like I cared. I mean, if they didn't want to believe the truth, didn't matter to me. As long as I knew that I was telling the truth. I wondered what my parents--if I had any--would say. Would they believe me? Would they be asking me ten million questions? Would they press charges? Take it to court? I didn't want to go to court, I just wanted to know what my parents would do.
"Kate," Issac said.
I looked over at him and looked back out into the distance.
"I'll believe you," he put a hand on my shoulder.
Crap,
I thought to myself. He read my mind.
"I don't want to talk about it," I sighed,
"Then mind remembering it for me?" he asked cautiously.
I scoffed. "You think I can forget it?!" I was on my feet now. "I wish I could forget it! You don't get to play all innocent because you don't have all the information! I wish I could forget what happened!"
"Kate, I'm sorry," he tried to rush it in.
Tears streaked my cheeks and I sat back down. I tried to barricade the creeping memory, but I couldn't. Not while I was vulnerable like this. Molly's face flashed in my mind again and the memory replayed. It only made me cry harder. Issac wrapped his arms around me, trying to soothe me.
"You can't tell anyone," I whispered.
"Okay," he whispered back.
Like I said--explaining hurts.
