Ever since that encounter with Nathan, my brain had been hurting from all my thinking. I was constantly thinking about love, and boys, and wolves. Mom worked a lot, so I had no one to talk to. It was like I'd never found my mom. We spent one day together and then she kept working. And by the time she got home, I'd either be asleep, or she'd head straight for her room.
I needed a friend.
I was tired of being alone. It'd been a week since Nathan, and I was so tired of making myself think about boys. I just stayed in this little house and watched movies. I didn't go out anymore, I lost contact with Issac, Erica, Fay, and Darnellel... I swallowed at Darnellel's name. I missed him. I missed him so much, it hurt. I wanted him to realize how much he had meant to me, but he wanted a fast commitment.
I was only seventeen.
I held my medallion, debating on whether or not I should call Darnellel. Should I? Would he answer? Would he want to talk to me? Had he moved on? Did he forget about me? I looked at my medallion and breathed. I opened it and awaited his answer.
"Kate?" Darnellel's face showed up.
"Hi," I said.
"Why are you calling me?" he asked.
"I miss you," I said, wanting to cry.
"Then you shouldn't have left," he said, anger vivid in his eyes.
"I--" I sighed. "I needed time to think. To figure out what the hell... And I found my mom."
"Well, then, it looks like everything worked out just fine," he snapped.
"Okay, I deserve that," I whispered.
I wanted to cry so hard. I was a terrible person. I had changed Darnellel--and not in a good way.
"Do you need something?" he snapped.
I shook my head and closed my medallion. I put my face in the couch pillow and cried. He had just shown me the new him. The person he had become because I wasn't ready for marriage. Why couldn't he understand? I never felt so insulted in my life. I sat up and walked out the door. I had to stop this. I had to make things right.
I had to find Darnellel.
His background when we talked, looked like he was outside. So he was probably exploring. I scanned all the faces I saw--none were Darnellel. I asked random citizens if they had seen him. Some said they didn't know him, or just didn't know where he was. Then I saw a brunette walking up to Darnellel. As soon as I saw them two kiss, I knew I had wasted my time.
I found him and he had moved on. He wasn't even thinking about me anymore. I should've known better. My heart felt like it shattered, my stomach had that feeling that you got when someone scared you. I felt lifeless. Like I was nothing. I wanted to look away from Darnellel's affair, but I couldn't bring myself to. We were so close, yet so far.
Then everything went black.
I wanted to fight for my life, but at the same time, I didn't. Everything was nice, peaceful. I didn't think about this certain concept before, because it would give me panic attacks. But now that I was experiencing it, I wasn't sure what I was afraid of. I was comfortable. Not exactly at peace like others, but comfortable. The fact that I heard urgent voices, was proof I was in the hospital--and that I was still alive.
I then decided to fight for my life. Because there were still unspoken words I needed to get out. I still wanted to become a mother, and a grandmother. I wanted to become an Important. I wanted to be loved, love someone who would stick by me. I wanted so many things, that I could probably accomplish.
My eyes barely opened and I saw a lot of doctors. They just as quickly shut again. I made sure I was still breathing. I forced my eyes open. I looked around me and tried to keep my eyes open. Doctors talking frantically to one another about my condition made my head ache.
"She's awake!" one said.
I then was pounded with questions about my health. I tried to answer to the best of my ability. A nurse finally stepped in and said, "Excuse me. But she has visitors who are very concerned."
They all walked out and the nurse smiled at me. "Would you like to see them?"
"Who... Who's all here?" I asked.
"Your mother, six girls, and...nine boys?" she counted mentally in her head.
I sighed, knowing who she was talking about. "I'd like to see my mom."
She nodded and stuck her head out the door for my mom. Mom walked in and sat next to me. "How are you?"
"I hurt a little," I said.
She gently placed her hand on my face. Tears were rolling down her face. "I can't believe you got this hurt."
"The damage can't be that bad," I said.
"Do you even remember what happened?" she asked.
"Uh-uh," I shook my head.
"You were standing in the street, staring at something when a eighteen-wheeler came and hit you. They didn't run you over completely, but... You lost so much blood. I got called at the school and they told me this and... I saw you in the street, thinking you weren't gonna make it. You looked so vulnerable and helpless... Then they loaded you into the ambulance and brought you here... And you fought through it. This is the scariest moment of a parent's life. I don't want to go through this again, Kate," she said, holding my hand.
"I'm sorry," I looked down.
"I'm just glad you're okay," she smiled and kissed my head. "Others want to see you."
"Would you send Mason in next?" I asked.
She nodded and walked out. Mason walked in and I half-smiled.
"Hi. Oh my gosh, you look terrible," Mason said.
"Yeah," I looked down. "I've been told."
"I am so sorry, Kate... This shouldn't have happened to you," he took my hand.
"It's not exactly the worst thing that's happened to me," I shrugged.
"What do you mean?" his asked, his voice filled with concern.
I looked at him through my lashes and shook my head. "Don't ask."
"Okay," he nodded, understanding me. "Well, I just came to see you and hope you get better. The pack is here to see you and... Let's just say they already like you. And you seem to be well liked by many."
I breathed. "I guess. I just feel like I'm alone sometimes."
"As long as I'm around, you'll never have to feel alone," Mason said.
"Mason... Please... Don't do this," I said, swallowing the ginormous lump in my throat.
"Do what?" he asked.
"I can't uphold any form of relationship right now. And don't try to deny that you've already developed something towards me. I have had my heart broken already. I'm just not ready," I said.
"Okay," he said hugging me. "I'll see you later."
And with that, he left. More and more of the pack came in and wished me the best. Fay and Erica were actually nicer to me than I had expected. We tried to make a happy mood in the room, but with the circumstances, it was extremely hard. I didn't want them to leave--I wasn't ready to face Nathan, Issac, and Darnellel. Especially after Darnellel practically told me how much he hated me.
When Fay and Erica left, Issac came in next. He ranted on about how he kinda liked Fay, but can kinda see how Erica liked him. I didn't exactly talk--I just listened. I was so tired of talking. It was weird for me. It was so much easier to sit back and listen to others. Talking about myself made me feel weird and selfish.
"Well," Issac stood. "Me and Mom still have some things to catch up on. Get well, sis."
"Bye," I whispered.
I was scared for who would come in next. Nathan, or Darnellel? What would they say? Would they be happy or sad I was here? Would they try to harm me? Did either one of them have something else to confess to me? What would happen next? And would I like it?
Nathan walked in and I looked at him. His face was filled with shock, anxiety, and I could see the water in his eyes already forming. He sat next to me--like everyone else had--and just stared at me. I wasn't sure what he was thinking, but I wasn't about to sit through silence forever. I wanted to know what he wanted--what he needed. Why he was here?
"Please say something," I said.
"Come home with me," he said.
"Nathan, I can't--"
"No, listen," he stopped me. "This is what I meant that day in school. About living perfect lives. We can still do that, Kate. We can start over. Live on our own. Have a family. Kate, I love you too much to lose you."
"Nathan, you know I can't," I shook my head. "I found my mom, I just got over a lot of things that have happened... I'm starting over on my own."
"Please just think about it?" he pleaded.
"Fine," I sighed. "But don't obsess me with it."
"Deal," he smiled and walked out.
Time for Darnellel.
He walked in and it felt like my heart stopped beating. I was afraid and happy at the same time. And the heart machine made that visible to Darnellel. He didn't sit down. He just stood there, looking at me like I was some random person.
"How'd you end up here?" he asked.
"I got hit by an eighteen-wheeler. At least, that's what my mom said," I shrugged.
He just nodded and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Just to see if you were okay."
"I thought you hated me," I said.
"I don't hate you," he shook his head. "I'm just hurt by you."
"What did I do?!" I sat up. "All I did was say no to the marriage and try to figure things out!"
"Look--"
"No, you look! The reason I'm in here, is because I had set out to find you and make things right! But then I saw you kissing some brunette and that's when I got hit! Should I have left? Yeah, sure. Did I want to? ABSOLUTELY!!! But could I? No! I couldn't bring myself to leave, yet again with how our conversation ended earlier," I exploded.
I could see the hurt in his eyes. I could see he understood what I was feeling. I sensed his empathy radiating off him. He was in utter shock. I laid back down in the bed and closed my eyes.
"Kate, I... I don't know what to say..." he said.
"Don't. Just go," I breathed raggedly.
Stress overtook my heart and then that was when the fight for my life resumed. Heart machine going crazy, my pulse racing, me not being able to make myself stable... I wasn't sure how this would end. But I fought and fought.
