Chapter 2
Ginger was opened up to a huge room with an oak table, two dark emerald chairs, and a staircase of light purple stone that she had never seen before. A snow-white horse with a gold necklace was before them. Ginger recognized this horse. This was Pine, the Royal baker of the palace.
"Greetings!" Pine chirped, with a forced smile on his face, "Want some apples?" He trotted over to a sack and ripped it open. In the sack were some crisp apples, their red skin reflecting from the torches.
"Now, now, stop being so prim," another white horse trotted over as well. This one had a set of iron armor with the number 1 carved into its side. He turned his head toward Dust. A sly smile displayed on his face and he narrowed his amber eyes as he said, "Hello, Dust."
Ginger's dad slowly said, "Hello, Snowy. We are here to bring our daughter to her breaking."
"Alright, follow me," Snowy continued. He walked toward the staircase, beckoning for them to follow. Pine started to follow as well until Snowy said, "No, not you, Pine. Back to your station."
Pine groaned and trotted back to his "cooking place." He took a back-glance at Snowy, narrowed his eyes, and opened the door swiftly with his snout.
Ginger walked up the stairs as they sloped up. After a few minutes, she finally made it to the top of the stairs.
The room was packed with horses from the town she lived in. They were all sitting in a few "benches" in which multiple horses could sit on. In the middle of the room was a glass mound in the shape of a cone, except that the top of the cone was flattened to the point where a filly, like Ginger, could stand on. Inside the cone was a small turquoise stone. Ginger recognized this stone as a diamond, the rarest stone ever made in Unum, the world of all creatures. From what Ginger saw, the room all together looked like a smaller version of an arena.
"Goodbye, Ginger. Good luck!" Marmalade whispered into Ginger's ear. She trotted off with Dust to an open spot in the arena.
"Come, I'll show you where to go," Snowy informed Ginger as he trotted to an opening under the arena, beckoning for her to follow.
"Yes, sir," Ginger responded in the appropriate manner as she went into the dark hallway. In the hallway sat a black-white male horse around Ginger's age. He had a big body for a "teen-horse," not to mention his baby-blue eyes.
"Ginger? Meet Raven. He is a 'teen' around your age who will be spending his breaking with you. Please, get along. I'd hate to punish you two," Snowy introduced Ginger to Raven as he walked off into the arena.
"He-hey," Raven stuttered. He started to shuffle his hooves and shake in worry as he tried to look Ginger in the eye.
Ginger put on a sheepish smile and said, "Heya. Don't worry, it'll be fine. It's just... Well... I don't really know what to do. I'm not sure what to even say or anythi-"
"I know. I'll tell you," Raven stopped shaking and smiled as he gave her the information, "So, you go in, not say anything, wait 'till your called, and step on that light when the diamond in the glass turns on. This usually happens in a full moon at midnight, so, we have around..." Raven paused for a moment and looked through the glass window that was in the back of the wall, "... Around 30... AROUND 30 SECONDS? Oh, huh."
Ginger chuckled and murmured, "Well, we don't have to wait long. Wait, how did you know all of that?"
"Oh, my parents told me! Flint and Steel, the former blacksmiths. Fun fact: they argue A LOT. So, if you here shouting in the arena, you know why."
After 30 seconds, Ginger heard Snowy say, "Ok, Ginger and Raven? Follow me, again." He butted Ginger and Raven out the door and trotted in the direction of a huge pillar. On that pillar were two horses. One was pure white with small, thin stitches in his body with blistering lavender eyes. The second was a light brown horse with diamond armor, the armor for the highest authority, with pale yellow eyes. Not to mention the white horse had some diamond armor too.
Ginger recognized the white horse as Un-named, the leader of Confir, land of horses. She also recognized the light brown horse as Cinnamon, Un-named's mate. She shook a bit, and walked to where the pillar was. Then she heard a booming voice.
"I, Un-named, leader of Confir, hear by announce Ginger, daughter of Marmalade and Lieutenant Dust, and Raven, son of Flint and Steel, former-blacksmiths, a permanent member of Confir. In about 1 minute, the crystal will be turned on, and the older foal will be able to be on the pedestal."
The one minute passed as Ginger saw Raven step on the pedestal. The full moon was directly above him. She widened her eyes as she saw a streak of blue light come beneath Raven and hit the moon, nearly impaling Raven without pain. After a few minutes, Raven was back to normal.
"Hey, don't worry. It'll make you a bit dizzy for a while, and you'll be back to normal," Raven said, dizzily. He tumbled to the ground and started to sleep. The crowd went wild with neighs and pounding of hooves of approval.
Ginger stepped slowly onto the top of the crystal and looked up. The moon was above her too now. Suddenly, the room got brighter, and brighter, and brighter than ever. Ginger felt her hooves get off the ground. She tried to scream and jerk her was through, but, she couldn't. It was like the light was keeping her still. Then she heard a whisper, "You are doing fine. I am Cligron, god of these mountains. I welcome you to my special heaven, of silence."
After a few minutes in silence, Ginger had enough. She whinnied and bucked as hard as she could to get out of the short coma, and finally, she felt her hooves touch the ground again. She opened her eyes and felt immediate dizziness. She tumbled down the pedestal and closed her eyes.
"Hey, wake up. You did well," said Raven in Ginger's ear.
She shot up her eyes and jumped up, "Mom? Dad? We can go now!"
Marmalade and Dust galloped down and snuggled Ginger saying stuff like, "Are you ok, dear?" and "Please don't die!"
Dust whispered, "Okay, we need to go now. If you see a bright light, er, I'll explain."
As Marmalade, Dust, and Ginger walked back home, Dust was telling Ginger a bit more about "the breaking." When the moon is high, the crystal supports a light that holds the silhouette of the moon, but the rest of the moon passes through invisible. "It's like the moon never moves," Dust says, "You should expect sunrise soon due to the moon passing though faster than normal."
The sun started rising up from the mountains. Orange light hit Ginger's face.
"Ah, right on time," Dust added, smiling.
