Chapter 8

"Glad you finally decided to show up for work." Said Graham as I walked in the sheriff's office. Before I could answer him, the phone rang.

I picked it up and said "Sheriff's office." "This is Dr. Whale." He said. "John Doe is missing." "The coma patient?" I said. "Yes, we need the sheriff down here right away." Said Dr. Whale.

I hung the phone up. "John Doe is missing." I said. Graham's eyes widened. "We'll have to head down there. Are you coming?" He asked. I nodded and grabbed my coat.

I rode in the sheriff's car down to the hospital. When we got there, John Doe's hospital bed was empty.

Regina arrived not too long after. "Why is she here?" I asked Dr. Whale. "She's his emergency contact." Said Dr. Whale. "I called her right after I called the sheriff."

Mary Margaret, Emma, and Henry came running in. "Henry stay back." I said. "What's wrong?" Asked Mary Margaret. "Is it John Doe? Is he okay?" "He's missing." Said Graham.

Regina glared at the group and I had to stand between them to avoid a cat fight. But of course, Regina came over anyways. "What are you doing here?" She asked. "And you." Regina grabbed Henry's hand and pulled him to her side. "I thought you were at the arcade. Now your lying to me?"

"What happened to John Doe?" Asked Mary Margaret. "Did someone take him?" "We don't know." Said Graham. "His IVs were ripped out, but there's no sign of whether he had a stroke."

"What did you do?" Henry asked Regina. Here we go. "You think I had something to do with this." Said Regina. "It is curious that the mayor is here." Said Emma. "I'm his emergency contact." Said Regina. "I found him on the side of the road years ago with no ID. I brought him here."

"Mayor Mills saved his life." Said Dr. Whale as he walked over. "Will he be okay?" Asked Mary Margaret. "Okay?" Said Dr. Whale. "The man's been on feeding tubes for years under constant supervision. He needs to get back here right away or quite honestly okay might be an overstatement."

"Well, you heard him." Said Emma. "Let's quit yapping and start looking." "That's what we're doing?" Said Regina. "Just stay out of this dear. And since I clearly can't keep you away from my son." She grabbed Henry's hand. "I guess I'm going to have to keep my son away from you." "Can we just stop arguing and deal with the problem at hand here?" I said in the most polite tone I could I could. The Mayor glared at me. "Go back to answering phones." She said. I was 10 seconds from punching her smug face.

They started to walk out. "Enjoy my shirt. Because that's all your getting." She said to Emma. "Sheriff, Natalia, find John Doe. You heard Dr. Whale. Time is precious."

"Well the mayor was helpful." I said sarcastically. "Doctor, how long since you last saw him?" Asked Graham. "12 hours or so." Said Doctor Whale. "Then that's where we need to start." Said Graham.

We all went up to the security rooms where Leroy and Walter were. "You two were the only employees on the floor last night and you saw nothing." I said after we explained the situation to them. "Not a thing." Said Walter. "Did anyone walk by?" Asked Emma.

"I didn't see nothing." Said Leroy. "Miss Blanchard, was there anything unusual that you saw when you were with your class?" Asked Graham. "I don't think so." Said Mary Margaret.

"We're looking at the wrong tape." Said Emma as she walked over to the screens. "This was the wall where Henry's class hung decorations. If this was really the tape, we would see the banners the kids hung."

"You fell asleep again." Leroy said, pointing Walter. "You selling me out?" Asked Walter. "I ain't getting fired for this." Said Leroy. "Oh, so drinking on the job is okay?" Said Walter.

"Gentlemen enough." I said. "Where's the real tape?" Emma put the other tape in. We watched John Doe walk out the door.

"He's okay." Said Mary Margaret. "He walked out alone." "Four hours ago." Said Emma looking at the screen. "Where does this door lead?" "The woods." Said Leroy. We all looked at eachother and headed off.

We walked through the woods until suddenly, Graham stopped."What is it?" I asked. "The trail ends right here." He said. "You sure? Cause I thought tracking was one of your skills." Said Emma.

"This is my world. I got this." Said Graham. "Alright, sorry." Said Emma. "What does he mean his world?" Asked Mary Margaret. "Isn't finding people your thing too?" "Sure." Said Emma. "But the people I find usually run somewhere like Vegas. Not a lot hit the woods."

"That's an interesting job, finding people." I said. "How'd you fall into it?"  "Looking for people is just what I've done for, as long as I can remember." Said Emma.

"What made you start?" I asked. There aren't really many exciting things around here, so I was curious. "Your parents?" Asked Mary Margaret.

Emma looked at her strangely. "Henry told me you were in a similar situation to his own." Said Mary Margaret. "Did you ever find them?" "Depends on who you ask." Said Emma.

I heard a bunch of twigs break behind me. Henry came running through the woods. "Henry!" Said Mary Margaret. "Did you find him yet?" He asked. "Not yet. You shouldn't be here." I said.

"I can help." Said Henry. "I know where he's going." "And where's that?" Asked Mary Margaret. "He's looking for you." He said.

"Your the last one he saw. He wants to find you!" Said Henry as we walked through the woods with our flashlights. "Henry, it's not about me." Said Mary Margaret. "He's just lost and confused. He's been in a coma for years."

"But he loves you!" Said Henry. "You need to stop chasing him and let him find you!" "Kid!" Said Emma. "You need to go home. Where's your mom? She's gonna kill me, then you, then me again."

"She dropped me at the house, and I went right out." Said Henry. "We need to get you back immediately." Said Emma. "No!" Shouted Henry.

"Guys!" Shouted Graham. We went over to where he was. On the ground, we saw John Doe's bracelet covered in "Is that?" I started. "Blood." Said Emma.

We walked until we got to the Toll Bridge. "Do you see him?" I asked. Mary Margaret shined her flashlight and on the stream bed, lied John Doe.

"Oh my god! Oh my god!" Said Mary Margaret as she ran over to John Doe. "I need an ambulance at the old Toll Bridge as soon as possible." Said Graham into his walkie talkie.

We picked John Doe up and put him on dry land. "No no no." Said Mary Margaret. "I found you it's going to be okay." "Helps coming." Said Graham. "Is he okay?" Asked Henry.

"Henry." Said Emma and we both ran over to him. "Don't watch." I said. "Come back to us." Said Mary Margaret. And I could've sworn I heard her whisper "Come back to me."

Mary Margaret did mouth to mouth. And the man woke up. True loves kiss. No, such childish things.

"You saved me." Said the man. "She did it. She woke him up." Said Henry. "Yeah kid." Said Emma. "She did." "Thank you." Said the man. "Who are you?" Asked Mary Margaret.

"I don't know." Said the man. "It's okay." Said Mary Margaret. "Your going to be okay."

An ambulance came and took the man to the hospital. I rode in the sheriff's car as we followed the ambulance.

We watched from the other side of the glass door as they put in the man's IVs. A woman with blonde hair walked right through the door. "David?" She said. "David? Is that you?" "Excuse me ma'am." Said Doctor Whale. "You can't be in here."

Doctor Whale ushered the woman away from the hospital bed. "Who is that?" I asked. "His wife." Said a voice behind us.

We turned around and saw Regina. "His name is David Nolan." Said Regina. "And that's his wife, Katherine. The joy on her face, well it's put me in quite the forgiving mood." She glared at us and then looked at Henry. "We'll talk about your insubordination later." She said. "Do you know what insubordination means?" Henry shook his head. "It means your grounded."

Katherine walked out of David's room. "Thank you." She said. "Thank you for finding my David." "I don't understand." Said Mary Margaret. "You didn't know that he was here in a coma?" Yeah, where did this woman come from?

"A few years ago, David and I were not getting along." Said Katherine. "It was my fault I know that now. I was difficult and unsupportive. I told him if he didn't like things, he could leave. And he did. And I didn't stop him. It was the worst mistake I ever made."

"You never went to look for him?" Asked Emma. "I assumed he'd left town all this time." Said Katherine. "Now I know why I never heard from him. Now I get to do what I haven't got to do in forever. Say I'm sorry. Now we get a second chance." I smiled slightly.

"That's wonderful." Said Mary Margaret. "Congratulations." I said. Dr. Whale came out of David's room. "Well, it's something of a miracle." He said. "Is he okay?" I asked. "Physically I meant." Said Dr. Whale. "His memory is another issue. It may take time for it all to come back."

"What brought him back?" Asked Mary Margaret. "That's the thing." Said Dr. Whale. "He did it on his own." "He just got up and decided to go for a stroll?" I asked. "He woke up and he was delirious and his first instinct was to go find something I guess."

"Someone." Said Henry. I motioned for him to cut it out for right now. Luckily, he listened. "Can I see him?" Asked Katherine. "Of course." Said Dr. Whale.

Katherine went in to talk to David. "Henry, let's go." Said Regina. Henry got up, but stopped. "Wait! My back pack." He said. He grabbed his back pack and stopped by Mary Margaret and whispered. "Don't believe them. Your the one he was looking for." "Henry," Mary Margaret started, but was cut off. "He was going to the troll bridge. Just like the end of the story." Said Henry. "Henry, he was going there because it was the last thing I read to him." She said.

"No! It's because you belong together." Said Henry. "Henry." Said Regina. Henry again started to walk away, but stopped at me and said. "We'll find Jared. I promise." And him and Regina both walked out.

Emma followed, but I had to leave with Graham. We drove back to the sheriff's station. "Graham?" I said. "This is the right thing. Right?" "What do you mean?" Asked Graham. "Reuniting him with Katherine." I said. "Well why wouldn't it be?" He asked. I shook my head. "I don't know." I said.

We got back to the sheriff's office and I drove my pickup back to my apartment. As I fell asleep that night, I could have sworn I heard a flute playing outside my window.
