chapter 1
My feet slapped the paved road as I ran through the streets of London, I looked over my shoulder hearing a shout in the distance from where I came. "HURRY AND CATCH THE GIRL! DON'T LET HER ESCAPE!!!"
I looked back to where I was running, trying to wipe the tears that blurred my view. "THERE SHE IS!!!" Another voice yelled closer to me.
I turned the corner running as fast as my aching legs would carry me, weaving through alley ways trying to shake my pursuers. Running from the buildings coming out onto the docks, I looked around hastily trying to find a place to hide.
The clouds parted letting the moonlight fall on a ship in the dock; I bolted for it running up the wide ramp on board the deck barely catching a glimpse of her name. ALODIE. I duck down and peeked over the watching the group of men who were chasing me emerge from the buildings.
"Where'd she go?!" one of the lackeys yelled looking around.
I panted as the sweat ran down the side of my tear streaked face, the group parted and the leader stepped forward. His cold eyes running over the dock till they stopped on the ship I was hiding on. I could almost feel his gaze on me, "check that ship..."
With that command my heart raced, '... I'm going to die....' that single thought ran through my head as I scurried on my hands and knees further into the ship. I cracked the cargo doors and dropped down there, though the fall looked short, it was deeper than I expected.
I landed with a sickening crunch, slamming my hands to my face biting it to keep me from screaming. I dragged myself to a tiny space and hid there, not long after two of the men in the group hopped down here as well.
I held my breath as their steps grew closer and closer towards where I was hiding. Tears welled in my eyes and I placed my head down on my knees closing my eyes tightly.
I waited, and waited, and waited for them to find me and drag me off the boat by my hair, but nothing happened. Opening my eyes and quickly peeked around the room seeing that no one was there,I ducked back down exhaling in relief.
I sat there staring at the dark walls, 'This was not supposed to happen, none of this should have happened' the tears I held in before silently slid down my cheeks.
The throbbing pain in my leg increased immensely "agggghhhhh!!!" A groan escaped my lips. The darkness in the corners of my eyes ate at my vision, blurring and blinding me from the world around.
"Fath-er..." I cried out finally succumbed to the darkness.
"-et.... -rlet....Scarlet." A deep voice called my name.
I slowly opened my eyes staring deep into my father's baby blue ones, "Father?!" I exclaimed surprised sitting up fast.
My father jumped back in shock clutching his chest, "What?!" he yelled back confused.
I looked at my surroundings, I was no longer on the ship nor in pain. I was at home in my father's study sitting in his desk, I looked at my father tear spilling over my eyelids.
"Oh dear what is the matter?" he asked pulling me into an embrace.
"Thank God it was only a dream..." I cried into his chest.
My father was the only family I had left, my mother died during childbirth so it has always only been us. My father is a physician and we own our own shop where I'm currently practicing Medicine, though that's a secret since it's forbidden for women to anything other than housework.
"What was only a dream?" he asked pulling away from me.
"Oh it's nothing to worry about!" I wiped my tears away and stood, "So we're heading to the Colonies?! Right?!" I said skipping excitedly after him.
"Indeed we are." he said still packing all of our belongings.
"Which Colony are we going to?! Virginia? Maryland? Pennsylvania!?"
"We are going to the North Carolina province." My father said smiling at my excitement.
"Province? So it's not a Royal Colony?"
"Yep it's lead by the Lords Proprietors."
"That's a weird name..." I said cocking my eyebrow.
My father only chuckled, "it's a group of eight Lords that are governing. Now enough with your questions, go finish packing! The voyage over there will take about six to nine months so I can tell you everything on the way to the colony." My father said placing the now full case by the door.
"Okay!" I ran off finishing the last of the packing we had left, father told me people were going to be here to help take our things to the ship and load them.
Tomorrow, tomorrow is the day we were going to be free. Free of the country, the people, this life, we are starting a new. I sighed watching the town fly by as the horses pulled the coach to the dock, everything was so peaceful. We watched as they loaded our belongs on the ship named, ALODIE. A sense of Deja Vú passed over me when I read the name, chills ran up my spine in fear.
"Is something wrong?" I heard my father's concerned voice.
"No, it's nothing I'm fine father..." I assured him.
"You seem rather pale though?" He questioned again.
"Yes... I'm... I'm alright father..." I said trying to convince him and me.
