chapter 2
The rest of the day went by in a flash and I was make dinner while my father set the table. Taking the pot off the fire I turned to my father. "fa-" I started when a knock on the door interrupted me.
"Just a second dear." My father said walking to the door.
I nodded and carefully carried the hot pot of food to the table, once done I walked to where my father was. He stood there frozen in front of the door, "Father?" I called but he still didn't move.
Slowly he turned blood spilling from his eyes and mouth, "You left me." he said his voice gargled as the blood kept running from his mouth.
A scream tore from my throat and I tripped falling backwards into a puddle. 'wha?' I thought as I was drenched.
I my heart froze as I stared at my hands, blood, a lot of it. I shook and looked down seeing my father's mangled body by my knees. He head twisted towards me "you did this."
I crawled back crying till I hit something hard looking back behind me it was my father. His mangled form grabbed me choking me with his bloody hands. I gasped scratching at his hand, fighting for air. My efforts slowed as the lack of oxygen got the better of me, I stopped struggling as the darkness accepted me.
I sat in the darkness crying not know what to do or if I was even alive anymore. My leg flared in pain and everything around me turned white, I opened my eyes blinding myself with the ray of sun shining in my face.
I sat up moving my legs to stand, "Ahhhhgggghhhhh!" I cried reaching for the hem of my dress. My once pale right leg was purple and red, slowly I took a deep breathe and laid my cool hands on the feverish flesh.
Taking a few quick breaths in I bit my tongue slightly and mashed on my leg, "mmmmmm!!!!" I moaned in pain not trying to scream.
I felt my wound till I felt a disconnect in my bone, 'I broke my leg... ho-' I thought till I remembered last night and my dream.
Tears filled my eyes again, 'No! Stay strong Scarlett, you need to take care of your leg.' I told myself sternly in my head.
I sucked in my breath and mustered whatever strength I had to stand up on one leg and look around. The cargo deck was quite spacious but the was nothing I could use down here. I studied the deck till I noticed a ladder leading up to the main deck.
I whimpered limping to the ladder slowly hopping up each of the rungs till I reached the hatchet at the top. I opened it looking on the deck seeing the crewmen running around doing their jobs.
I carefully climbed out trying not to slip, as I stood I came face to face with a British soldier. He glared down at me, "Who are you and why were you down there?" he demanded.
I swallowed nervously, "Well Ummm, my Father Dr. William Townsend and I are passengers of this vessel heading for the Carolina provinces." I answered looking around.
His eyes narrowed, "Why were you down there?" he asked me again.
"I went to get some supplies my father stored in there, however I couldn't quite bring them up so I came back up here." I said politely.
He only eyed me, "be off then women! This is no place for you to be." he yelled turning back walking another way.
I rolled my eyes and limped off the deck head to the room my father had his stuff placed for us. I entered and dropped to the bed minding my leg not to make it worst. I sat there fiddling with the sheets before I finally stood and limped to the desk that had my father's case.
Grabbing the heavy luggage limping back to the bed, I opened the case looking at my father's supplies. I reached in and grabbed two hand carved planks and some gauze. Then I reached in and grabbed some willow bark and Coca beans, taking the beans I put a few in my mouth and chewed the bitter beans swallowing them. Then I took the willow bark and chewed on a piece as I placed the two planks on the sides of my leg and tied them around my leg with the gauze.
I laid back letting the medicine kick in, 'Now remember don't take too many of the Coca bean they are a fast acting pain killer that's used for broken bones and it helps the swelling!' I heard my father's voice in my head.
I closed my eyes drifting of into a dreamless sleep, not wanting to think about any of the events that happened.
There was a knock on my cabin's door waking me from my slumber, "Sir, Ma'am, dinner will be served soon." A younger male voice called from behind the closed door.
"Oh umm, thank you..." I mumbled sitting up and looking back around my cabin. My eyes landed on the chest in one corner of the room, I sighed carefully standing not wanting to further injure my leg.
I hissed with each limp I made to it, opening the chest I looked through my belongings freezing when I came across a picture of me and my dad the we got painted my sixteenth year. I slowly sank to the floor clutching the picture to my chest as silent tears rolled down my pale cheeks.
I collected myself wiping the stray tears left, l knew this was going to be a long, harsh trip to a New World with no one to rely on.
