chapter 10
The group of people stared at me in shock, I walked closer to them sticking my hand out, "here let me help you..." I said to a younger dark skinned girl.
'They have both Natives and Africans?' I thought as she stared at my hand confused and slightly in fear.
"It's okay I won't hurt you, I want to help you." I said softly.
The people in the group shared some cautious looks with each other before looking back at me. The girl in front of me slowly raised her hand towards mine.
I took her hand in mine helping her to her feet carefully, her hands were rough and calloused. I could tell they went through years of hard work and suffering. Once she was up I started helping the others rise, "do any of you understand English?" I asked slowly.
They stared at my till girl about my age raised her hand, "yes, I do." She said nervously.
"It's okay, I really won't hurt you." I reassured her trying to calm their nerves. "What are your names?" I asked her.
She went through the list of alien names I've never heard of, but guessed probably descended from their ancestral tribes. "My name is Marjani, you can call me Mary." She said finishing softly.
I nodded, "may I ask you to translate for me?"
She nodded, I turned to face the group fully, "okay, I want to check everyone, is anyone hurt?" I asked while Mary translated my question into their beautiful language.
"Rabo in la ogaado haddii qof dhaawacmo?"
The group looked from her to me, "I'm a doctor I can help, I don't want to hurt you.."
"Iyada oo dhakhtar, ayay naga caawin kara ... ma ay na yeeli doono." She said pointing to me.
Eventually the group allowed me to assess them checking if they were okay, "I'll come back later with some medicine to help ease the pain and help it heal faster." I told the group of men who were beaten the worse out of the group.
"Ayay u iman doonaa daawo si aad ugu bogsiisid, iyo joojiyaan xanuunka" she told them they nodded towards me, I took it as a thanks.
"I'll be leaving I promise I'll be back with supplies, where can I find you guys when I get back?" I asked her dust my hands off.
"From here go north follow the edge or the brush." She said softly
"Okay, I'm leaving now to get my supplies." I said turning to leave.
A warm hand encased my small wrist, "God bless you, thank you for helping us and having that done to you." Mary said.
I shook my head, "what I went through is nothing compared to what you guys go through, and it's not fair to you guys."
I watched as everyone's face changed filling with surprise as Mary translated what I said. I nodded turning to leave, I rushed back to my shop leaving strange looks on everyone's faces that I passed.
I made it back to my shop grabbing a basket placing as much medical supplies I could once I did that I ran up stairs to check on Thomas and Ella.
"Oh why hello Scar- What happened?!" Thomas said seeing the already forming bruise on my face.
"Oh nothing much. How's Ella been?" I asked walking towards the bed.
"She's been fine... but are you okay?" He asked concerned.
I smiled at him, "I'm really okay, I just came to check on Ella then I have to go treat some people."
Thomas sighed, "I'm amazed how you can care for others... but I'd be careful, you can't always trust people. Out here it's kill or be killed if you don't watch your back." He said as I checked Ella's vitals.
I mixed some herbs together and placed some more water on to boil, "once this is done boiling mix these herbs in the water, let it cool down and wake her to drink it." I told him heading to the door.
"Oh and thanks for watching out for me." I said heading back down stairs to get me stuff.
I lifted the baskets on my arms trying to balance the weight on both sides. I wobbled outside heading back to the plantation, I looked around the city again, 'hmmm that's strange I haven't seen Jack all day...' I thought going further down the path.
I looked at the trees as they danced in the wind, I smiled. I love nature, I always have, It was another reason why my Father and I were planning to come here. I took a deep breath and sighed trying to relax as much as I could with the heavy baskets.
I stopped in my tracks as the tingling chills raced from the bottom of my neck to my feet. I whipped around staring into the brush, I felt like I was being watched. I could almost feel their gaze burning right through me.
"H-hello?" I called out.
I got no reply but I knew someone was there. "I know your there, out there...." I said firmly. The brush moved, shaking as whoever was there ran off, I darted forward trying to see my pursuer. But to no avail I didn't see them, I got back on the path and rushed the rest of the distance to the plantation.
I didn't enter the front gate, I just came in the same way I did before. I yanked on my baskets pulling them out of the thick growth. I looked at the sky trying to guess the suns rotation to find the direction.
I shrugged and headed off in the general direction Mary gave me, ready to help their people.
