chapter 5
I laid in my new bed staring blankly at the bare ceiling. I didn't move, just laid there frozen in place by the horrifying dream I had last night. I closed my eyes, "God, please... take these nightmares away... forgive my selfishness, and may you bring peace to my father." I prayed silently.
I sat up in my bed looking out the dusty window over the small town, my new home, Clarendon. I basked in the warmth of the morning sun, till a banging on my door startled me.
I hopped out of my bed jogging down the stairs dodging crates till I made it to the door. I cracked to the door seeing a tall figure till a familiar voice called out, "Heya Scarlet!"
I sighed placing a hand on my chest, "Hello... James~?" I said trying to remember the fellows name.
His cheek twitched slightly, " No but close, Jack." He said.
"Jack! I knew it started with a J!" I yelled chiding myself.
He chuckled, "it's al'ight" he muttered putting his hands in the pockets of his trousers.
I cleared my throat, "Ummm what can I do for you? Jack." I asked politely.
"Oh uhhh-" he stammered slightly a blush dusting his tanish cheeks. I raised and eyebrow at him, "Well I was going to ask if you needed any help with setting up the shop...?" He said shyly.
I looked around, I was A LOT to do all by myself turning back to him I nodded, "I swear would appreciate the extra hands"
He smiled brightly as I invited him in, "just a second..." I said rushing upstairs. I entered my room grabbing my bag digging through it for my own work trousers and top. Quickly I changed and grabbed the notepad with the plans I had scribbled on it.
"Okay..." I said tying my hair up with some thin rope. I walked to the crate against the furthest wall on the left, Thank God my father had organized everything into each individual crates cause it would have made unpacking even more torturous.
I removed the popped lid carefully peering inside, multiple jars were piled up in the crate. "So I guess we'll start with this one... do you think you could help me move this to that back room just over there around the corner?" I asked him bending over the crate.
After hearing no reply I turned to find him staring at me, 'Wha-' "Jack?" I called out to him confused.
He shook his head, "oh!" He yelled rushing towards me. "Sorry, not used to seeing a women in men's clothes."
I nodded at his explanation, "yeah... can you push the crate that way?" I asked again grabbing the other side pulling it while he pushed moving it to the back room.
Along the walls there were shelf spaces, lots of wide space as well to make medicines. I nodded momentarily approving of the room. I walled in to the back wall pulling a board off what looked like a window letting the sunlight filter in.
"So what do I do?" Jack asked me.
I turned to him, "bring me the jars, and place them on that counter." I ordered walking to the furthest wall again.
He carefully started bring the jars placing them on the counter top, I sighed this was going to take forever. We had a lot of medicine for all types of things, even our own homemade remedies.
"So what is all this stuff?" He asked placing more jars down.
Rather than giving the full explanation of the plants and herbs I told him the simple truth, "just some dried herbs for illnesses and other problems." I said shrugging.
After placing the full crates in the room and emptying them my stomach growled. Jack stared at me and chuckled, "maybe we should take a break and get some food?"
I blushed looking out the window at the bright blue sky, "Yeah I need to do some thins around the town as well." I agreed passing him.
I sighed, Jack is nice... almost too nice, to the point it's starting to freak me out so getting out and away from the more personal questions I sighed. "So Scarlet, where to first?" He asked walking beside me.
"I need to exchange my... I just need to go to the bank..." I said hastily covering what I was going to say. My family wasn't rich but we sure we're far from poor, the money I had with me made me uneasy. Especially telling people I don't know, they already look like they want to take advantage of me.
We turned towards the bank and started off, crossing the dirt roads. The silence between us was thick and awkward, 'hmmm... should I say something? I really don't wait to talk cause I've done so much already...' I thought.
Someone cleared their throat, bringing me out of my muse, "yes?" I asked politely turning to Jack.
He jutted his right thumb to the building behind him, "I believe this is the place we were heading to?"
I nodded in relief, "Thanks." I said walking past him in rushed steps down the road to the wooden building. I gazed at the bank, it was a nicely built wooden building with bared windows.
I pulled the door open and walked in seeing some of the folks from around the town in line. I walked to the line followed closely by Jack. I stood there observing all the people there, I frowned at them. 'Why are so many people injured?! Even the old...' my face softened into a sad look as I looked at a old fellow arguing with the clerk.
"There's nothing more I can get! But if I don't have money my child will die!" He yelled.
I looked at him, "die?" I muttered.
"That's not my problem you can either pay for the loan you have already or get out." The man behind the counter said boredly.
"W-what?! Do you not care if a child dies! Look at her she's sick! If we don't get the medicine she'll die!" The old man yelled. I now noticed the small child he clutched in his shaky arms.
"Nope, don't care all the children die around this age anyway." The man said glaring at the two over the counter.
"You heartless fool, demons be your soul!" The older man hissed turning around stomping pass us and out the door.
I turned racing after the them leaving Jack, "Scarlet?!"
"Sir! Sir wait!" I called to him.
