chapter 4

I sighed, "where to Ma'am?"

"Clarendon County... Townsend Family Healer." I called out to him.

We road from the town catching the sign, Jamestown, the dense forest surrounded us as the time went by. I shut my eyes trying to rest a little which to my surprise came easily. No nightmares, nothing but darkness, a jolt woke me and I looked outside the window seeing we were in another town.

I hopped out the couch looking around the streets my eyes widened at what I saw, yes there were people but they were injured. Lots of them, I turned to the Coachman as he finished unloading mine and my father's luggage in the building, "How much do I owe?"

"Oh no Ma'am, I've been paid already..." the older fellow said shaking his head.

"Here I insist." I said handing him a tip.

He stared at me in shock and smiled, "Well Ma'am if you ever need a ride just go down to that build, it's the letter office, ask for old Charles and I'll come to ya." He said down to me.

I nodded, "okay sure thing... Old Charles"

With that he hyyahed and trotted off down the dirt road. I looked back at the large building in front of me, it wasn't big but it wasn't small.

The porch was covered by the over hanging roof with benches, and the sign hung over the wooden door. I walked in looking around seeing the luggage piled up by the door.

The open room was large and empty, further ahead there was a staircase leading up to another level. "This is home.... I guess I should unpack my luggage now while I later for them to deliver the rest of our stuff..." I mumbled picking up some bags walking up the short stairs placing the bags down at the top. I walked to the first door on the the level and opened the door.

It was a bedroom, I sighed and went and got the bags bringing them into the barren room. I did the same with the rest of the bags bringing them up. After that was done I patted my dress and walked into the hallway exploring the other rooms.

Once looking around the building I sighed, 'What am I going to do with all the space?'

I sat down on the bed in my room and opened the notepad that belonged to my father. I need to do some planning to exactly what I was going to do with the shop.

"Okay I guess for the extra rooms upstairs I can use those for patients I need to watch over constantly... and down stairs is where I'll practice and treat everyone... hmmm that back room I can store all our herbs." I said to myself writing down the ideas.

"I need a place to make my medicines...."

All the new things and plan were tough I only knew as much as my father was willing to teach me. I watched everything and know how to do it but regardless of that  it was a lot.

I stood and stretched, I got the freedom I wanted so I had no time to complain about it. Walking down the stairs, my stomach grumbled, I got the pouch of coins from my father's bag and walked out the door locking it with the key in hand.

I looked around 'where would I go to get some food?'

"Ma'am?" A voice called behind me I whipped around, there was a young man standing there shyly.

"Yes?"

"I happen to notice you were the one the moved into the healers place... you new here?" He asked.

"Ummm yes I arrived early this morning to this colony from England." I told feeling uneasy, I wasn't used to being approached  by anyone.

"Oh well I was going to stop by an' ask if you would like a tour of the town?"

At this I lightened up a bit, "Oh sure I was about to go look for food actually... do you know where I can get some?" I asked.

He lit up like a lamp, "I sure do! I know the best place!" He said grabbing my wrist dragging quickly.

I smiled nervously, "Ummm so what's your name?" I asked him as he kept dragging me.

"Names Jack... Jack Smith."

"I'm Scarlet Townsend"

After a few more moment we stopped in front of a large building. I looked at the sign, "Mother Margaret's Inn?" I questioned him confused.

He walked in still pulling me in tow, once inside my face scrunched up at the assorted smells that invaded my nostrils. I coughed breathing in the smoke that hung in the air.

Jack pulled me to the counter, "Mother Margaret, I want you to meet Scarlet."

The lady at the counter who was cleaning a glass looked at me, smiled, "Well honey hello." She greeted.

I shivered something from her smiled told me not to place my trust in her, and normally when my instincts flared up I followed. I smiled kindly back at her, "Hello." I nodded.

"She's new here." Jack said jutting his thumb towards me.

Her smile only great more wicked, "really..."

I paled at bit but kept smiling, "Yes Ma'am, Jack here said this was the best place to get food in town."

I answered her sitting down on one of the stools, "What will you have?" she said pointing to a sign.

"Ummm..."

"Get her the regular, my treat."

I whipped around facing Jack, "Oh no you can't it's fine really."

"No its my treat." He said again assuredly.

I stared at him shocked, 'Why is he being so nice? He doesn't even know me?'

The lady rolled her eyes and went off, me and Jack carried out a small chat as she came back with a bowl of food.

It looked like stew, I said my Grace quitely and took a bite, to my surprise it was very delicious. I savored the warm flavors that filled me mouth.

Like Jack had said he payed and we left only to go place to place around the town. I made note of a few of them I would have to stop by later.

When the tour was finally over I turned to Jack, "thanks for the meal and showing me around town, it was very sweet of you." I thanked him seeing a few men in front of my new home. "I must go."

"Wait! Will we be able to chat again?" He asked blushing slightly.

I smiled, "sure I could always use some extra help."

With that I left and unlocked the door, so the men who were carrying the heavy crates could get in, "just place them down here where ever." I told them.

Once all the large crates were placed they popped them open and left before I could give them anything. Looking around the now filled room I shook my head locking up and went upstairs.

I was exhausted from the day, the excitement, fear, anxiety wore me out. Rest greeted me peacefully that evening.
