chapter 7
I stared at the little girl crying in the bed, her arm was bleeding?! "What happened?!" I asked him.
"She started shivering and started scratching her arm and it just started bleeding!" He said frantically.
I rushed down stairs grabbing a mug, this wasn't Malaria... something like it but it's not that... grabbing some water and dipping the cloths in it I rushed back up stairs.
I grabbed the herbs I brought up stairs earlier and put them in the hot water mixing them up. Rushing back down stairs I grabbed Turmeric and Chamomile for her arm and mint.
I rushed upstairs placing the mint in the cup with the herbs, "sit her up she needs to drink this." I ordered mashing the Turmeric and Chamomile together into a paste.
"Ella... drink this it will make you feel better..." the older man said gently to the small child.
She didn't respond so he held the cup to her mouth slowly pouring a little in a she drank it. "Make sure she drinks it all." I told him, he nodded.
After a few minutes of watching her slowly drink the medicine he placed the cup down, I grabbed the cool rag and cleaned the fresh wounds on her arm applying the paste over it. I tied another clean cloth around her arm watching the small girl as she rested.
"I think it would be best if she stayed here tonight, you're welcomed to stay as well... I just need to keep an eye one her for now." I told the old man.
He looked at the child sleeping peacefully, "... okay."
I left the room leaving the two of them in there, ushering Jack out as well. "Thanks for all your help today... I'm going to get some food now if you want to come we can go to the place you took me yesterday..." I offered walking down the stairs.
His eyes widened, "sure!"
We walked to Mother Margaret's Inn, finally getting something to eat, I look at the food place in front of me again ordered by Jack. 'Does this boy think I can't order?!' I frowned but said nothing.
Jack had already dug into his food which I don't blame him, it was well past noon. I took a bite of what seemed to be fish, and some local vegetables.
I hummed in acceptance, "it's so fresh..." I mumbled in delight.
Jack nodded next to me, "Yep it is, fresh caught and picked this morning!" He said enthusiastically.
Margaret snorted in the corner of the bar rolling her eyes, 'hmmm she's awfully rude... but I can't judge her for that since I don't really know her...' I thought.
"So Scarlet." I heard Jack call me.
"Hmm?"
"Why did you decide to come to the Colonies?" He asked, I froze d mid bite mouth agape.
Everyone else that was nearby seemed to also focus in onto the conversation. My breath hitched I knew the question was coming, sooner or later, I was just unfortunate that it had to be sooner.
I set the fork down lowering my head, I didn't feel so hungry anymore. He cleared his throat, "oh ummm... it's fine if you don't want to answer-" he said hastily.
"Sooo~" he trailed on.
I peeked at him through my scarlet bangs, 'no... please don't ask anymore questions...' I pleaded in my head. Dread well inside me as the look on his face revealed he had another question.
"I noticed when I was looking for the cloths that you had men's clothes... do those belong to your father? When will he get here?" He asked me.
The wind was knocked out of me like a boulder just crushed me, I paled at the memories. 'He's never coming back...' The sad thought crossed my mind quietly.
I stood turning to him smiling brightly, "Thank you for your help today really... I must be on my way. Thank you for the meal as well." I said turning and leaving.
As I exited I heard Jack's protest and others chiding his stupidity. It's not his fault I just didn't want to hurt him by crying.
I looked at the sky, "hmmm I'll take a walk for now.." I decided heading for the forest path I found while looking for the blacksmith.
Once entering the thick forest I stretched trying to relax a little there was so much on my mind. 'Everywhere I go in town I see many injured people, what could be the cause they all seemed so peaceful.'
I thought walking down a narrow path into a clearing between the trees, looking around at the Nature. I sighed, the sound of a snapping stick behind me made me whirl back and stare through the trees. "H-hello?" I called out to see if there was anyone there.
I saw no one, heard no one, frowning I turned back coming face to face with a tanned, pepper haired lady, "Ahhh" I screamed staggering back, tripping over my own feet.
The old lady stared down at me holding my gaze, "Waya." She said motioning to raise up.
"Wa-waya? What does that mean?" I asked her as I stood.
She shook her head, "No, come."
She started off across the clearing, I stared at the basket on her back. It was full of various types of of plants that looked familiar and some other I didn't know.
I rushed after her, "where... where are we?" I asked her.
She said nothing just kept walking, I stopped trying to ask her questions. 'Where is this lady taking me? She doesn't seem to have any ill intentions, but...' My thoughts trailed off when she stopped at a tall tree.
She bent one of the branches breaking it, turning back to me, "here take."
She held out the branch, I took it and examined it, "Acorns?" I questioned confused.
"This tree is white oak, Acorns from it are used as herbs." She explained walking off again.
My eyes widened, 'She's showing me herbs? Why, how does she know I know about herbs?' I catching up to her, I eyed her cautiously.
She turned to her left sharply, I stumbled heading the same direction. I looked around memorizing the route we were heading in to gather the new herbs.
We came into another opening full of blooming pink trees, I gasped at the beauty. "...wow... this is so beautiful, we never had anything like this in London..." I said in wonder.
The lady watched me, "Usdi... come" she held her hand out.
