chapter 8
I walked to her in a daze, "We call this Quana... also use it in medicines." She said handing me a pouch full of the flowers.
I looked at them, the to her, "Why? Why are you doing this for me? I asked her confused. "Why would you do this to someone you don't even know?"
Her face softened and she smiled placing a hand on my cheek, I could feel the emotions radiating off her. A mother's love. I swallowed the knot that formed in my throat my eyes filling with tears. 'She's like a mother I never got to have...' The thought floated through my mind.
"There's more to learn." She said.
We went around to many places gather many herbs, she told what they could be used and what they were called. She leaded me back to the edge of the town turning to leave and head back into the forest. "Wait!what do I call you?!"
She turned, "Unitsi..." she said walking away.
I watched her disappear holding my new found herbs, I turned and rushed back to the shop. Before I reached the door it flew open and Jack ran out straight into me.
I fell down and glared up at him, "Oh my! Scarlet! There you are, I was so worried about you!" He yelled yanking me up and off the ground, shaking me in his arms.
He slammed my body against his, my arms acted on their own shoving him away from me. "He staggered back.
I looked up at him with a blank face my eyes seething into his, "Don't do that... Ever." I said coldly.
He froze as I picked up the herbs, I sighed looking at his sad face, "I'm sorry I didn't mean to snap at you, just been stressed."
I walked pasted him into the shop and for once he didn't follow me in. I went to storage room and added my new collection into it.
After I finished I went upstairs to my room, I entered quietly not to disturb the sleeping girl. "How has she been?" I asked stepping next to him.
He faced me with a relieved smile, "Much better than before... Thank you..." he said.
I checked her out smiling, she was getting better, "Mr...." I started.
"Oh, Thomas." He said sticking his hand out. "And this is Ella." He gestured to the small girl.
"Ah Scarlet, pleasure to meet you Mr. Thomas." I said shaking his out reached hand.
I looked outside at the fiery sky, the blazing Sunset glowing, "Like I said earlier I would feel more comfortable if the two of you stayed a few days..."
He nodded, "yes... I'll leave her in your care, and Scarlet I own the farm down the street if you need any vegetables come to me." He said thankfully at me.
I smiled, "Thanks, I would actually like to some rather than keep eating at Mother Margaret's Inn."
The older man huffed at the name, "yeah I wouldn't stick around there, that place is like a trap... I'd watch your back around her, she's not to be trusted." Mr. Thomas warned.
I nodded in agreement to his warning, then all the questions I had about the town started racing through my mind. "Mr. Thomas?"
"You can call me just Thomas." He said chuckling.
"Okay," I laughed with him but became serious when the question left my mouth, "Why is everyone so injured? While viewing the town I've also seen a lot of damaged buildings... what happened?" I asked him.
His face darkened at the questions, "Indian attacks!" He hissed.
I cocked an eyebrow, "Indians? From India?"
"No... the Savages from around here... I believe they call them Natives or something." He said clasping his hands together resting his elbows on his knees.
"What do they look like? Are they not nice?" I asked confused.
"No they ain't nice, them Savages only shook know how to kill. And they kill everyone men, women, and children." He said.
I swallowed nervously, "so they attacked they town?"
"Yes... but we captured some and they are now slaves, along with the Negros." He said grimly. "Further down the main road for the town is a plantation own by Wilkins and you will see them if you look."
I nodded, "okay I'll go by there tomorrow..."
"But be careful, all of them will attack if they feel they can over power... I would also beware the forest. Don't go there by yourself either." Thomas warned.
"Oh... okay?" I said confused it seemed fine to me.
"The Savages live out there, they wait, and attack those who wander by themselves... they have killed before..." he said sadly.
I looked down then at the young girl in my bed, "is she your child?" I asked him.
He nodded, "she is now... my daughter and her husband were killed by them." He said with disgust.
The room went silent, "I'm so sorry...."
He shook his head, "it's fine..."
After that I stayed with him chatting, the sun had long set so I dismissed myself, "I'll be right next door in the other room. Goodnight."
I walked to the empty room looking at the bland room, "I'll guess this can be my room... I'll just move my belongings over tomorrow." I yawned.
I sat on the bed looking out at the stary sky, that lady I met, "Unitsi..." the native word rolled off my tongue. She was nice, though she didn't live in the town so I could only hope I would see her again.
"Waya... what does that mean?" I thought aloud as I laid there staring at the sky, slowly I succumbed to the sleepiness.
