Waywards
A few weeks later Darcy's phone rang, sending out the familiar chimes of a song she wrote for Alan.
"Yellow? Green. Orange...." Darcy answered, she waited for Alan to say the usual Red, Blue, Purple and then she'd say What's Up, then they would start talking about whatever one called about, "Alan? How's New York? Alan?"
"Darcy..." Alan spoke quietly over the phone, "New York is fine. But I have to talk to you about something.... Important."
"Okay. Shoot." Darcy told him, slightly confused. Was this another one of his jokes like when she gave him his guitar? Or was it something different...? Darcy had no clue
"Darcy..." Alan kept speaking quietly, Darcy strained to hear him, "I... I think that it's.. it's for the.... the best... if we..." He let it hang there, out in the air
Darcy didn't believe her ears, "Are you-Are you breaking up with me?" She asked shocked at the words that escaped her mouth. The words were so bold. Such bane words to be spoken about ones relationship, especially, if you thought the person that spoke them to you, was to be your happily ever after. Your significant other. Your true love.
"Darcy... Look, for one thing, you're the one who said it. Not me."
"You hinted at it."
"You said it."
"Darcy... Look I know it must be hard to think about or say... or... something. But as much as I love you, I love music more. Music doesn't talk back or act like a bitch. Music is plain and simple." He sighed, "So yea, I guess I'm breaking up with you."
"Is this... Is this a sick morbid joke?" Darcy asked not believing what was happening
"No Darcy. It's not."
"You don't love music more, it's the fame you love. And the girls! All the pretty fangirls!" She yelled at the phone as if casting a curse or as if her words were missiles directed his way
"No Darcy. You're acting ridiculous. Crazy." He tisked at her over the phone
"Stop judging me! I'm not a child!" She screamed
"It's the music. You don't... You don't...wouldn't understand."
"Then make me understand! Please Alan! You are my everything! Everything!"
"Bye."
"Alan? Alan! Alan?!" Darcy yelled into the receiver
It was dead.
In one huge burst of emotion, she flung the phone at a wall causing it to break and leave a dent. She sunk to the floor.
'Why?' She thought
Why.
