Chapter Eight Hope
Ward tried pulling his arms free. His wrists were still latched to the chair. Then Simmons walked into the room with Mac.
"So you want me to push him, down into the basement?" Mac asked, confused.
"Yes," Simmons replied. "Right into the prison."
"Why are you doing this to him again?" Mac asked.
"He just tried to kill me but luckily Fitz iced him.
"I did not!" Ward butted in.
"I'm just doing some normal experiments," Simmons went on. "I'm trying to see if this healing medicine I made will work."
"Ok......." Mac replied, not knowing anything about medicine and thinking Simmons was doing the right thing.
He pushed Ward on the chair and down to the basement. As soon as Mac left, Simmons grinned.
"Alright Ward, we are about to start the process. In the end you will have powers, or as Skye would say, a gift."
Ward glared at her. Leave Skye out of this.
"I made the vaccine up myself," Simmons explained.
"Why?" Ward asked. "I thought you were afraid of powered people!"
"Exactly," Simmons replied. "You'll see what my brilliant plan is."
Ward looked at her, scared but not showing it.
Simmons placed four needles of purple liquid onto the counter. She then put the needles into Ward. One on each of his arms into the veins, and then one on each of his upper arms. He started breathing hard and glared at Simmons.
"What did you do?!" He asked.
"Don't worry," Simmons replied, with a crazy look in her eye. "I'll be back when your finished."
Simmons turned around and went up the stairs. Ward glared at her until she left. Then he started pulling at the latches again. I have to get out of here. I can't turn into a monster.
❃
"Coulson!" Skye yelled and rushed over to him. He was on the ground and was groaning. "Are you ok?!"
He groaned. "What's Lincoln doing here?!"
"I guess he really loved me," Skye replied, thinking. "But I'm with Ward now. I don't want him."
"Well, don't tell him that," Coulson advised. "He's knocked out right?"
"Yeah."
"Then let's get him into the car."
They walked over to Lincoln and iced him, just in case he woke up. Then they put him in the back row of seats.
"We should get back to the base and lock him in the basement," Coulson said.
"Yeah," Skye replied. "Ward's gonna flip when he hears what Lincoln said to me."
❃
Ward started shaking as the electricity started crackling, flashing, and turning on and off.
"SIMMONS!!! AHHHHH!!!"
Ward broke the latches on his wrists and fell off the chair. He ran into the wall and fell on the floor shaking. He got up again and ran into the other wall. He had a massive headache and was closing his eyes. His body was red and sweating, he felt like he was on fire.
Simmons watched him from the tablet.
"It's working! He is going to be able to make fire and be dangerous!"
"Simmons!" Skye yelled. "We're home!"
Simmons gasped. "Shoot." She grabbed the tablet and hid it behind her back. She forgot the TV was recording Ward too.
Skye dropped her backpack on a chair and walked around the base, looking for Simmons. "You are never going to guess what we found on that mission," Skye continued, a broad smile growing across her face. "Simmons I need to tell you what happened it is hilarious! You are going to fangirl like there's no tomorrow-"
Skye walked around the corner and looked at the TV. Her facial expression went from happy to horrified. "WARD!!!" Then she turned to Simmons. "WHY IS HE IN THE BASEMENT?! HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S BEEN POISONED?!" Then Skye gasped, realizing something. "Simmons.....did you do this?!"
Before Simmons could answer, Coulson bolted around the corner. "What's wrong?! I heard yelling!"
"Look at Ward!" Skye yelled and pointed to the screen.
Coulson gasped. "Why is he in the basement?! Why is he red?! WHY DOES HE LOOK POISONED?!" Then Coulson turned to Simmons. "SIMMONS! ANSWER!"
"I'm going down there!" Skye yelled, before anyone could stop her. She grabbed some towels.
"SKYE!" Coulson yelled. "DON'T YOU-"
It was too late.
"Ward! Ward!" Skye yelled, running down the steps. She pressed a button on the tablet, and the barrier disappeared. She obviously thought Ward wouldn't hurt her. She rushed over to him. He was running into walls.
"Hey, hey," she comforted. She put her hands on his shoulders.
He fell over and looked up at the ceiling, but looked like he was looking into another dimension. Obviously, humans shouldn't have this vaccine. Simmons' plan was working wonderfully. Skye bent down on her knees and started wiping his sweat off with the towels. Her hair got in his face, and he breathed in her scent. She slipped a shirt over his head and tried lifting him up. He was too heavy. She got his shoulders and head onto her lap.
"Hey," she said, while stroking his face. "It's ok. I'm here now."
He looked up at her, and slowly sat up. It looked like there were fire flames in his eyes.
"Ward," Skye said, and stood up. He stood up too, towering over her. "Ward."
He started walking toward her. Skye put out her hand in defense. But she couldn't do it. She couldn't throw Ward back with her powers. He then put out his hands and shoved them onto her shoulders. He pushed her. Skye went flying back, looking at him in shock. For a second, it seemed like time was frozen. Skye froze in the air, about to crash into the wall, and looked back at Ward, horrified. He looked back at her, just coming out of his trance, and realizing what he had done. He looked back at her too, horrified. She slammed into the wall and fell down. He rushed over to her. She was lying on the floor, her arm across her body, just laying there, so perfectly.
"Skye, Skye!" He yelled. This time, he knelt down beside her and picked her body up. He held her in his arms. Her eyes were closed. Ward turned around to see Coulson pointing a gun at Ward.
"I'm gonna say this very carefully," Coulson said. "Drop. Her."
Ward looked at him ferociously and thrusted out his hand. I'm not the bad guy! Don't point a gun at me!
Fire came soaring out of his hand, it hit the floor where the barrier usually is. He moved his hand all around until he couldn't seen Coulson anymore, he had separated Coulson from him and Skye. Then Ward turned back to Skye and looked down at her. His hand was burning up.
She slowly opened her eyes and looked up at him weakly. "Ward.....stop.....you need to calm down."
"I don't know how," he continued. Then he lifted up his burning hands. "I can't stop this!"
Skye sat up and ignored the blaring fire alarm that was ringing in her ears. It was just her and Ward. "I felt the same way with my powers. It's ok. I know how you feel. I can help you."
Then a bunch of steam came rushing into their faces, interrupting them. Skye saw somebody dressed in special armor and had a helmet on, like a fireman. He was holding a fire extinguisher. That's where the white steam was coming out of. Then Coulson jumped through the steam and grabbed Skye. The person in the armor put out the rest of the fire. Coulson dragged Skye out of the cell and on the other side of the barrier. He grabbed the tablet and turned on the barrier so Ward couldn't escape.
The guy in the armor took off his helmet, it was Hunter.
"Are you guys ok?" He asked.
Coulson sighed, breathing hard. "I think so. Let's get out of here."
❃
"I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU DID THIS!!!!" Coulson yelled, infuriated. There was a vein popping out of his head.
Him, Skye, Simmons, and May were in his office.
"I-I'm very sorry sir," Simmons said. "May said it was ok to do it so I thought-"
"MAY?!" Coulson yelled. HOW COULD YOU?! WHY WOULD YOU?!"
Skye sat on the window sill in Coulson's office. She was looking at Ward on the tablet. She didn't care about what happened between May, Coulson, or Simmons. She just wanted Ward to be ok. She watched him make fire appear in his hand and leap back in fear, which made him fall on the floor. He was totally out of his trance now, and didn't know what was going on with him. Skye looked at him sadly. He needs help. I need to help him. I've been in this situation before, I could help him. He's totally out of his trance from Simmons' experiments now, he won't hurt me, will he? Skye turned her head and looked at May.
She glanced at Skye before looking back quickly at Coulson.
"I don't trust him," she answered. Despite everything her head was held high. "And I liked Simmons' plan of getting rid of him."
Coulson looked at her, appalled. "He's our team member now! How could you do this?!" Then he turned to Simmons. The vein was still popping out of his head. "Is there anyway we can fix him?"
"No sir," Simmons looked down. "It's permanent."
Skye glared at her. She slammed the tablet down and leaped off the window sill. She started walking towards Simmons, her hand ready to throw her back. "You little-"
"Skye," Coulson interrupted. "I've got this."
Skye went back over to her seat at the window, holding a lot of feelings in.
"May," Coulson continued. "We make decisions together."
"I'm part of the council!" She said.
"You aren't the only person in the council!" Coulson yelled. "I mean half of the council is dead!"
Coulson sighed, rubbing his forehead. "You two are done! Get out of my sight!"
Once they left, Skye slowly walked up to Coulson's desk, still holding the tablet. They both sighed and looked down, thinking about the same thing.
"Sir, I need to take Ward for a little bit."
"I think that's a good idea," Coulson replied.
Skye looked up, surprised. "You do?"
"Yes," Coulson answered. "I trust you. You were in his situation once, and someone trained you." Coulson looked at Skye with a serious face that she had only seen when he had told her that she had alien blood in her. "Can you help Ward?" He asked.
Skye stared at him for a long time, as if thinking about it. At last she made up her mind and nodded. "Yes sir. I can."
