Chapter Nine Training

Coulson didn't wait long to send Ward off with Skye. He had sent her off with him that night, he didn't want his Shield base on fire. "You take care of the dangerous, fire one, I'll take care of the rest," he had said, referencing to Lincoln, May, and Simmons. Skye however, only had to take care of Ward. Only. Ward was a handful!
Skye turned the corner on the dark street. Ward shifted a little and mumbled something in his sleep. Skye couldn't help but smile.
Coulson had iced Ward twice before putting him in the shot gun seat in the car. Skye then hugged Coulson goodbye and got in the driver's seat. "Be careful," he told her. "I don't want you getting burned." She smiled at him before driving away.
Skye pulled into the lot of an abandoned hotel. She had found it on the computer with Coulson and thought it was the perfect place. The lobby downstairs was huge, so that's where Skye could train Ward to control his powers. But they needed a place to sleep, so it had bedrooms and bathrooms.
Ward shifted around again and slowly opened his eyes. He rubbed his eyes and looked around. Then, he caught his surroundings. He leaped up, only to find himself very weak and have the seatbelt pull him back into his seat. Skye looked up from her laptop and over at him.
"Sleep good?" She asked.
"Please tell me that was all a dream," he groaned.
Skye sighed and smiled. He's so cute! "No, sorry. Everything that just happened is real."
Ward sighed. Then he rubbed his head. "Did somebody ice me?!" He asked, annoyed.
"Yup."
"Man those hurt!"
Skye chuckled and touched Ward's hand. She looked up at him with her big, brown eyes. "Are you ok?" She asked.
Ward looked down. "No. I mean, I did just get experimented on by Simmons."
Skye sighed and closed her laptop. "I'm so sorry about this. I shouldn't have gone on that mission. I should have-"
"Hey," Ward interrupted and put his hand on the back of her neck, his fingers combing through her hair. "Don't beat yourself up. You're not the one who tormented me. Now," Ward said and looked through the window. "Why are we here?"
"Training," Skye answered and got out of her car. She put her laptop in her bag and slipped it around her shoulder. Then she grabbed a duffle bag that had all her clothes and toiletries in it. Coulson had packed Ward one too so Skye grabbed that one also. Then she grabbed a suitcase that had a fire extinguisher and some other tools that could be used to keep Skye safe from fire. With a heavy bag with a computer, two duffle bags, and a suitcase, Ward couldn't resist helping her.
"Here let me take one."
"No no! Ward don't-"
Ward grabbed a duffle bag by the strap but his hand burned it. The strap broke in two.
"Do that," Skye finished.
"Oh," Ward said, looking down at it. "Sorry."
He looked at Skye. She sighed and grabbed one of the straps, dragging the bag on the ground.

Skye tossed and turned in bed. She couldn't help but feel like she was going to wake up to the building on fire. She finally drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Skye woke up sweating. She had a dream that the building was on fire. Ward was her rescuer and romantically carried her, wedding style, out of the building. But then she had remembered that he was the cause of the fire and he started to heat up. Skye had leaped out of bed, sweating. It was still six in the morning. But Skye couldn't go back to bed. She didn't want to risk having another nightmare. Skye sighed. I can do this. She got out of bed and threw some clothes on. She put on a black t-shirt and black skinny jeans. She slipped into her black boots and headed down to the lobby. She pulled some food she packed in her bag and went into the kitchen. She had put all the cold food or drinks she had brought into the refrigerator last night. She made some breakfast for Ward too. Surprisingly, the abandoned hotel still had electricity.
Skye sat down at a breakfast bar and started eating some cereal. She pulled out her laptop and started emailing Coulson:

Dear Coulson,
Don't worry the hotel isn't burned down, yet. I feel like I have control of things, Ward hasn't even woken up yet. Although it is pretty early. I couldn't sleep last night and I woke up about twenty minutes ago. I'm eating breakfast right now and surprisingly am feeling at home. That's probably because I have moved around a lot and never really had a real home........except for Shield.
Anyway, when you get a chance please tell me how Lincoln's doing. I know he kind of electrocuted you, but he did help me feel at home at Afterlife. He's a great guy, just insecure and nervous. His house did just get destroyed. I hope everything gets sorted out with Simmons and May.
From,
Skye ;)

Send.
Skye combed her fingers through her hair and sighed. She finished her breakfast and dumped it in the sink. She rinsed the sink and came back to her computer. She had gotten a reply from Coulson:

Dear Skye,
I'm so happy to hear you are safe. But really, I thought you would be kicking Ward's butt! He made you get up super early for training, and you're letting him sleep in. Make him get up! Unless you don't want to do training right now. I can't blame you. Teaching people how to control deathly powers is a lot harder than push-ups. You really shouldn't be up this early either though! You must be exhausted. Don't stress out, you have been in his situation before, and you know what to do. Just be calm and reassuring. And most importantly, remember to be safe.
From,
Coulson :D

Skye sighed and smiled. She loved Coulson. Especially his emails. She sighed again. She needed to start thinking how she was going to train Ward. She had been dreading the moment and had been putting it off. Skye sat there and thought for a minute. What's the opposite of fire.......water! Hmmmmm.....I wonder.......

Ward sighed and slowly opened his eyes. This bed was so comfortable! Way better than Shield's. Then he realized what his eyes were looking at. The clock. The time! It's ten thirty! Oh, Skye's gonna kill me! I should have been up hours ago!
Ward sprang out of bed and slipped some clothes on. He rushed into the elevator and then ran into the lobby. Oh, where would Skye be at this time! Asleep. No! Not this Skye. Maybe the old, lazy one. But this Skye is assertive! Ward gasped. Am I turning into the old Skye?
"Skye! Skye!" He called, running down the hallway.
Skye looked at her watch. Perfect timing!
He rounded the corner into the kitchen. "Skye?" Ward asked nervously.
"Hey Ward."
Ward cautiously approached her. "Skye I'm really sorry I had no idea what time it was. I totally overslept please forgive-"
"Ward," Skye laughed. "Relax. You overslept, it's fine. You just had a huge couple of days with some pretty big, shocking events. I wouldn't be surprised if you overslept."
Ward looked at her, shocked. "So......you're not......mad?"
Skye smiled. "Of course not."
Ward looked at her, still not believing her fully. Skye tilted her head and smiled. "Hey, come here." Skye got off her stool and hugged Ward. "I know it's been really strange, and weird, the last couple of days. Trust me, I've been there. But you can't give up. It may take a while, but you'll eventually see that you have a gift."
Ward inhaled, taking in Skye's scent. He wanted to say something but didn't know what to say. Skye nuzzled in on his shoulder. Then she sighed. They needed to get to training. She broke the hug and looked up at him. "You ready?"
Ward nodded.
"Ok," Skye smiled. Then she took his hand. "Follow me."
Ward looked at her, surprised. "Wait, Skye where are we going? I don't want to burn the hotel down. What if I-"
Skye led him around the corner and through a door. Ward looked at it. "Oh."
The room had a pool. Skye couldn't have thought of a better plan. She had found the pool room.
"Ok. So Ward. Just aim your hand or palm or whatever you want to call it at the pool and do your thing."
Ward looked at Skye nervously. She gave him a reassuring look. It was like teaching a toddler how to walk. Ward needed all the TLC he could get. He slowly put out his hand. Steam started coming from the water and up into the air. Then, the first flame came out of the water, through Ward's hand. He started to make more flames, until the fire took up most of the pool. Skye looked at Ward. He looked at peace. Then he started turning his hand. The fire started getting bigger. He didn't look at peace anymore, he looked worried.
"Skye," he said. "I can't stop."
The fire crackled as it crept up onto the concrete.
"Skye!"
Skye looked at the fire, horrified. But she didn't know what to do, she was frozen. She then remembered she had a fire extinguisher in her bag and ran to grab it. She pointed it at the fire and started putting the fire out.
Ward's hand was bright red. He looked at Skye for help. He had no idea what to do. "What do I-"
"PUT YOUR HAND IN THE WATER!" Skye yelled.
As soon as Ward put his hand in the water, the water took control of the fire on it. Skye put out the rest of the fire that was on the concrete. She sighed and made a silent prayer to God, thanking Him.
Ward slowly took his hand out of the water, breathing hard. Skye closed her eyes, still shaking from stress. She looked around the room and sighed. "And I thought my powers were destructive."
