Chapter One

Working for Zhang Yixing was way less scarier and way smoother than I imagined it to be initially. Even though it has been barely two days, which mostly consisted of bringing coffee into his office and checking three newest reports and articles for mistakes, I had already got accustomed to my new workplace. He had been out this morning to interview someone, or at least that's what I understood because everything I could really concentrate on was the way his round glasses slid down the bridge of his nose as he stared at me with his office bag in his hands.

I was working on one of his reports and I could not resist to admire his style of writing, the way he used the correct and most intense words at the perfect time while cunningly linking them with a sarcastic word play. My hand was placed underneath my jaw, my cheek leaning against my palm as my eyes scanned the main body of the article for the hundredth time. Despite carrying a few mistakes, the article was almost flawless; I believed that those tiny typos occurred upon his fingers flying over the keyboard in speed of light.

My eyes were practically glued to the computer screen, making me unconscious of my other surroundings and even the fact that Lisa lightly knocked on the door. The fact that she marched straight inside after noticing that getting my attention was futile this very moment was justified by the absence of Mr. Zhang, who was supposed to return any time soon with the expectation of a finished oral report of his article.

"Have you gone deaf? I was knocking on the door over five times." She walked towards the small desk that was directly opposite of Mr. Zhang's and stood beside me, scanning the words that were shown on the bright screen. "Oh no, you're submerged in work already..Is that his new article?"

I nodded my head slightly while my eyes remained flying over the perfectly structured and authentic sentences. "Yes it is, I'm supposed to finish the report by the time he comes back."

She focused on the watch wrapped around her wrist and narrowed her eyes. "Didn't he say that when he left the office? You've been doing this for over three hours now. Why don't you come and join Jihyo and me for lunch? It's already 4pm."

I closed the file after reaching the end of the last paragraph and shook my head. "I still have to check typography in another of his essays, and I should wait incase he comes back soon. I don't want to be impolite."

She laughed, a disbelieved tone lacing through her words. "You've been working here for three days he won't expect you to always be here, especially not at lunchtime."

I simply ignored her as my fingers wrapped around the computer mouse to click open the other file that consisted of his monthly essay for a journalists magazine that was organized by many companies like Junmyeon's.

"So you're not coming?"

"I told you, I think I should be staying exactly because I've been working here for such a short amount of time." I sighed and gave her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I'll go to lunch with you tomorrow and any other time as long as Mr. Zhang is present."

"You're acting like Mr. Zhang is your boss instead of Junmyeon." She rolled her eyes in annoyance as my own once again focused on the screen instead of her, giving my back a small pat and sighing in exhaustion. "Alright whatever, I won't bug you anymore. But don't blame it on me later." She chuckled at the end, which reassured me that she was not mad at me after all.

"See you later, Lisa."

As silently as she had entered the office previously, she exited it after my eyes had shifted to hers for a split second. For a moment, when she opened the door, the noise caused upon keyboards, technology and vocal chords filled the room for a blink of an eye, before I was shut out from the noisy and busy world again.

She was not wrong at one point, I was already completely intrigued and engrossed by his works as if they were circling around mysteries and myths that were new to my mind and consisted of cases I've never perceived before. But it was quite the contrary; it were ordinary, daily topics and issues, which made my interest in it even more obscure then it was in the first place.

I corrected a few of his mistakes, one of which made a small smile rise at the corners of my mouth as I found it several times. The topic of the essays were casualties of our world as in those who were submissive to darkness in their very own mind as if it was possessing them.

"Oh? You're liking what you're reading?" I got startled as his voice suddenly echoed in the entire room whereas it was previously engulfed in utter, nerve wrecking silence that he broke in a matter of a snap of fingers. My head snapped up to face him instinctively.

He quietly laughed with an honest smile, closing the door behind himself before loosening the collar around his neck. "I didn't know you were that concentrated, excuse me."

"No, no." I gave him a nervous smile as I nodded my head towards him, before I finally closed the file of the essay I finished correcting thoroughly. "I didn't notice you had entered, it was not your fault."

The smile he was wearing grew steadily as he placed his brown leather bag on the surface of his glass table, a brown paper bag following shortly after. He slid the sleeves of his dark coat off his arms and tilted his head back into his neck agonizingly slow, enabling me too see his prominent Adam's apple that pressed tightly against his throat from the inside as he gulped.

"This interview was more than just exhausting." He hung his coat on the back of his chair and glued his hand flat against the table as he eyed me with a remaining smile. "How were things here? Were you able to finish the article?"

"Yes, I finished everything. I also corrected a few mistakes in your essay that might have occurred because of the keyboard, but it was amazing besides that."

His eyes widened in surprise, which was also displayed in his thrilled tone. "You already corrected the essay? I wasn't expecting it that soon, you're fast Jiye." His eyes trailed up to focus on the clock that was hung on the wall behind me, before they met with mine again. A small frown creased his forehead. "Have you had lunch yet? Don't tell me you were working on these since I left the office."

"No Mr. Zhang, I wanted to wait for you to return incase you wanted to hear my report already." I shook my head, slightly embarrassed, and cleared my throat as my hand operated with the computer mouse. "But it is alright, I'm not that hungry anyways."

I was a very good liar, but it seemed like my stomach seemed to protest over my statement as it slightly growled, perfectly audible in the small moment of silence we shared. Mr Zhang let out a quiet pit of laughter as he stepped forward to my desk, placing his hand at the edge of my table as his body was located behind the chair I sat in.

"First of all, please don't call me Mr. Zhang. I'm just Yixing." For a moment his voice carried a cheerful, childish tone, before he leaned down and hovered over my back to extend his hand towards the screen to my computer, pushing the power button.
"And secondly, you'll treat yourself with some food right now. I just bought a huge portion on my way back so you can have some of mine."

He remained in the position behind and slightly above me too long, considering his head was separated from mine by only inches and his warm exhales danced through the hairs on my neck that stood at their ends eventually. I shivered upon the radiation of heat and wrapped my fingers around the armrest of my office chair nervously. "Mr.- I mean Yixing, you don't have to do that. I am perfectly fine with having something later, my shift will end in two hours anyways."

He pushed himself off the table and leaned against it with his hip and arms crossed over his chest, displaying his well muscled arms that seemed to almost rip his dress shirt apart at its seems. "I insist on it, Jiye. And how do you know I won't make you work overtime?" He chuckled and rose one of the corners of his lips into a handsome smile as he eyed me curiously.

Carefully and slowly, I lifted my head to stare right back into his eyes. "You will?"

He released his arms from their position on his chest with a laugh that was overshadowed by his heavy sigh. "Of course not, I was simply joking."

Mr.- Yixing's movements held something interesting and unique as he strode back to his own desk where he had placed his things before. He removed his bag filled with folders and papers and chugged it onto the floor, making me flinch momentarily, before fishing out two big boxes out of the paper bag that he put down in front of me.

"Whenever I'm terribly hungry I'm no fun so let's not let this happen to you either, alright?" Pushing his own chair closer to my table, he spoke quietly while watching me in remaining curiosity. "Since we will keep each other company for a lot of time we should both make sure the other's needs are satisfied and saturated."

I finally returned his smile and leisurely leaned back in my chair. "That sounds good."

"Deal?" He peeked at me from the corners of his eyes as he opened one of the boxes that whose content was still steaming hotly, leaving a sheer glaze on his face.

"Deal."

Zhang Yixing was not the grumpy, old and neurotic journalist I thought he would be. He was merely a few years older than myself like Junmyeon, and spent his entire time creating lovely constructions of words, tellings and those word plays I adored so much. To say the least; he was someone I was glad to be working with now and in the future, and my primary worries seemed completely irrational now that we were conversing so openly.
Of course I was the slightest, tiniest bit intimidated by his appearance. I could not deny how breathtakingly handsome he looked wearing those round specks, and how precise his every movement seemed in comparison to mine of gross motor skills.

But well, he was my superior. I had to remain as calm as possible, even if my palpitation increased every time our eyes stared into each other for longer than two seconds.

"So about my article-" Shoving his fork through the remnant of vegetables, his eyes aimlessly trailed along the objects on my table as he was trying to find the right words in his head. "What do you think about my style? I mean I know what other people say, but I want to know what my own assistant thinks I can perhaps improve?"

I chocked on the food I was chewing in my caverns as if he had just said the most lunatic thing that I would ever hear. "Improve? You're joking, right? You want my advice on something that lacks literally nothing?"

He smiled sheepishly as he put aside the fork and closed the empty food box. "I'll take that as a compliment, thank you Jiye."

"You don't have to thank me." I said.

"Jiye." He looked at me while debilitating in his head for a moment. "You're still young, you only finished your studies, this job is a great opportunity to gain experience in this field. I'll gladly give you advice if you are to write an article on your own in the future."

I gave him an honest smile as my fingers travelled to the power button of my computer screen in order to turn it on. "Thank you Yixing, I'll surely come back to that some day when I will be writing my first article with frustration." I let out a few chuckled as my eyes were concentrated on the display.

"But I must say, I'd like to see what you can do." He rubbed his finger against his chin in deep thought while leaning closer over the table. His eyes sparked in excitement as my own widened in surprise, gulping down the hint of ambiguity that laced through his words. "How about..you write a little something? Nothing big, just a small article around a topic I will give to you?"

"Are you serious?"

He laughed as he said, "Of course I am. I'll be the only one to read it and I'll give you an honest feedback and advice on how to improve things, if there are any to improve at all."

"I'm sure there will be a lot." I shook my head and watched him in curiosity as I
crossed my arms over my chest loosely. "So what should I write about?"

"I'll have to think about that for a while. I have your phone number from your file, so I'll send you a text message if something sparks my mind later today." He rose his eyebrow. "Is that okay with you?"

I was more than okay with this; the day went by slowly but bearably, Yixing was working over his newest piece and some secret project I could not yet know about while I was breaking my mind over ways to express things in the text he expected of me. I had not yet received my topic, despite that my mind was racing with the thought of not wanting to disappoint him in any way.

I kept stealing glances of him every now and then, thinking I could detect the topic he'd tell me to write about in the way his facial features scrunched and softened every now and then. Nonetheless, there was nothing to perceive beside his tongue slightly sticking out of his mouth in concentration, and his eyes narrowing and squinting to read the words displayed on the screen better.

"Is something wrong?"

At one point he had caught me staring at him intensely but not necessarily on purpose. I was merely thinking about the topic and letting my eyes trail aimlessly around the room, magically they always seemed to land on his face or whatever object was located on his desk.

I had shaken my head when he did so, he had laughed, shaken his head with a chuckle and averted his gaze from mine again to continue working on his computer with his fingers gliding over the keyboard in speed of light.

The last two hours of my shift went by in a jiffy just like that, it was six when I started to gather the stuff that I had scattered all over my very own desk, and shut the computer down finally.

"If you don't need me anymore I will get going." I tilted my body to the side so I could eye him behind our computer screens that were back to back.

He nodded his head and his eyes shifted to mine for a second, before they were glued to the screen again. He seemed fully concentrated and busy. "I'm fine, thanks for your help today. See you tomorrow, Jiye." He gave me a sweet smile as his fingers tapped against the keys.

"Good night, Yixing."

I chased after Lisa after seeing her leave through the exit of the office. I held my bag tightly and bumped against her back on purpose, laughing as she got startled by the sudden, unexpected impact from behind her.

"Leaving without me?" I asked, still laughing and joining her at her right. "You knew my shift ended at six as well!"

"I thought you'd be staying until Yixing left." She wriggled her eyebrows, which made me jokingly punch her shoulder.

I sighed as we finally left the office building, striding towards the parking lots where both of our cars were waiting for each of us. "He's not that bad, I don't know why you were so exasperated in the beginning."

"Well, to justify myself, he seems in a good mood these days, maybe that also influences the way he treats his colleagues. Everyone is wondering what is in his coffee every morning since he treats everyone so politely, he used to be really nonchalant."

I scrunched my eyebrows in irritation as I spotted my car in the far left corner of the large parking lot area. "Nonchalant? He seems very open and interested, he even asked me to write an article so he could evaluate my writing and skills."

"An article? What about?"

I had no answer, at least not that exact second. However, not long after I had entered the car all by myself and sat behind the steering wheel the phone in my handbag loudly signaled that I had gotten a new message. My hand extended to reach and rummage through my bag instantly, fishing out the phone as my fingers came to grasp it.

Momentarily my breath hitched as the screen was still bright to show the new incoming message from just a few seconds ago. Firstly, my eyes detected the unknown number- which I supposed was Yixing's- before they trailed to the right were his short message was displayed behind a small, green banner.

"It's Yixing, and your topic is 'sociopaths'"
