Chapter Two
MAGGIE
I focus on spreading the butter over my stack of pancakes as the others quickly dig in. Judith talks to Negan through a mouthful of food about something Michonne had told her the day before, her voice a bit muffled.
She's so peaceful around the man, not sharing the worries us adults have. But why should she? She was merely a toddler when Negan forced himself into our lives. She couldn't fully grasp just how horrible he'd been.
"Where's Hershel?" Judith's voice pulls me from my thoughts, and I turn my head to look across the hall into the living room where my son's playpen is set up.
"He's still asleep, but I'm sure he'll wake up soon." I tell her, giving her a small smile when she nods and continues to stuff her face, a string of syrup dripping down her chin.
"I heard he's walking now?" Negan's eyes meet mine as he waits for a response, and I'm momentarily left speechless.
"Um, yes, he's getting better at it." I reply softly after clearing my throat, keep my answer pleasant for Judith's sake. If it were just Rick at the table with us I may not have been so nice. Negan nods, and I heave out a soft sigh of relief when he drops the subject and turns his attention back to Judith.
The floorboards creak behind me, and I can tell by Rick's smile that Michonne has made her presence known.
"Morning sweetheart. Maggie left a plate for you on the counter," Rick informs her, voice filled with love and admiration towards his wife.
Michonne makes her way over, plate in hand, and stops next to Rick. She leans down to tenderly kiss his lips, and I avert my gaze with a smile as his hand rubs over her small bump.
I'm happy for them. It's about time they feel comfortable enough to move on with life, especially after Carl....
"Michonne and I have to go on a quick supply run. I was hoping one of you could keep an eye on Judith while we're gone?" Rick looks between us, and I can feel my protective instincts kicking in as Judith starts to beg Negan to stay.
"We'll both stay." I say without any hesitation. I refuse to leave the man alone with a child. I'll just have to let my personal feelings go for a couple hours. I've gone this long without killing him, so this will be a piece of cake. I hope.
