Chapter 10 

I took my towel and walked to the lake. I dropped my towel on a nearby rock and skimmed off my clothes leaving my bathing suit on.  

I dipped into the water feeling the cold water on my warm skin. I backstroked a little for a while and then took a deep swim under water. I felt like frog doing the frog kick. When I got up for air I heard someone cough. "What are you doing here?" I asked.  

"I came for a swim." Wes said. He took off his shirt and stood up and grabbed hold of the hem of his shirt upward and soon his head was out of his shirt. He dropped his t-shirt on the floor and he was shirtless. His shiny tan skin and small abs made me stare at him for a long time. I wondered why he hid this from girls. He'd probably have a lot of friends by now and maybe even a girlfriend then he did a back flip into the water. I kept doing what I was doing before, swimming under water. 

When I went up for air again, I turned to the rock where I put my towel on, to dry my face. But when I turned around Wes trapped me with his hands around me. "What-" "I want to know how you felt about what I told you the other day."  

"How I felt?" He nodded.  

"Uhh... the kiss was a first." I said hesitantly.  

"That was your first kiss?" 

"Yeah and no. I mean I've kissed a boy, but not a real kiss when I sort of had a... boyfriend." "A boyfriend?"  

"Well, umm... I guess we never made it official, but umm, anyway he said he wanted some time and we broke up. Ever since that I've haven't had a boyfriend." "Wow." A pause. "You haven't had a boyfriend since?" I nodded. "If you had one, would you?" "I don't know." I said, "Depends how he is."  

"So if I'd have asked you to be my girlfriend, right now, would you?"  

"I don't know-" I looked at him more closely. He was waiting for a real answer. "Are you actually serious about this? Are you actually asking me to be our girlfriend?" I asked him. "Umm...if you take it like that, then yes I am asking you to be my girlfriend. Or if you want just a first date. Is that a yes or no?"  

"Umm..." I thought of this clearly. I didn't want to end up like when I was dating Justin. "I promise if it doesn't work out we'll get a break from each other. But just give me a chance. I like you."  

"Okay," I said giving up, "only a date, but if it doesn't work out we get a break, okay?" "Yeah, sure I promise. You just made me so happy!" he said spinning me around. I chuckled a little. "And for accepting to be my date you may get a prize." "What is it?" He leaned in and kissed my cheek.

The next morning a trumpet sound woke us all up. "Everyone please report to the front in the drive way." The intercom said. Everyone walked to the drive way and some stood on the stairs.  

I was probably the last one to get out. "Good morning," Ms. Hansen started to say. I started to lean on the log post and then I suddenly felt someone grab my waist, "Good morning." Wes whispered. I smiled at him. "Today will be our first experiment. We will be doing contamination check on the lake's water. Now eat your breakfast then get dressed and meet me here with your partners."

"One partner will get water with this pail," Ms. Hansen held a red pail, "the other partner with the probe will check the temperature and with the salt water test you will see how salty the water is. You will then use a contamination tester." She passed all of us one paper and another paper for both partners. "These are the instructions and the other one is the results paper for each pair of partners. Now write both of your names on the results sheet and get started." Wes and I walked almost to the end of the dock. I got our equipment, "What do you want to do?" I asked him.  

"You can get the water." I grabbed a pail of water and gave it to him.  

"Now that we're dating, what would you want to do first?" he said putting the probe in the pail of water.  

"I'd like an official first date."
