Chapter 4

The day after the Oscorp attack:
When Peter Parker was eating lunch with his longtime friend and co worker, Betty Brant, he did not expect to see Flash Thompson walk into the resturant they were in. Flash was wearing an US Army cap and he recognized Peter. Flash put his head down in shame; remembering how badly he treated Peter back in high school, before he was forced into military bootcamp and shown just how much of a jerk he used to be. Peter, seeing the shame in his eyes walked over to Flash, though he wasn't sure why. Never did he thought he'd ever willingly walk up to Flash, but his Uncle Ben would want bygones to be bygones.
'I forgave Flint Marko for accidentally killing Uncle Ben. This shouldn't be too difficult.' Peter thought as he walked over to Flash, confusing Betty.
"Flash Thompson? You are Flash Thompson, right?" Peter asked. Flash nodded.

"Hey Parker. How are you?" Flash asked awkwardly.
"I'm ok. How about you? You look kinda nervous." Peter replied. Flash sighed.
"Just remembering how I used to treat you. I'm sorry. Especially after your uncle died and all, and I still treated you like trash... if I could take it all back..." Flash started to say before Peter waved him off.
"It's ok. Join me and my friend, Betty for lunch?" Peter asked. Flash smiled and nodded.

Mary Jane was practicing for her Broadway comeback with her friend Louise. They were at Louise's house looking over their scripts.

"MJ, relax. You got this." Louise told her friend. MJ nodded, but her mind was not on drama at the moment. It was on the fact that it was the day when she was first saved by Spider-Man at Oscorp's World Unity Festival. The first time a super villain was nearly the cause of her death. A scenario that would happen again and again. Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom and Sandman, though Sandman had not wanted to go that far as to threaten someone's life. She was frustrated, just remembering how she kept being the damsal in distress was beyond frustrating for her.
"MJ, please focus." Louise said to her friend, worriedly. MJ sighed.
"Sorry, Louise. I just thought of a bad memory." MJ replied. Louise nodded before her phone's notification ringtone played. Louise checked her phone and squealed in excitement at whatever was said in the text message she saw.
"Oh my gosh!" LouIse said. Mary Jane smiled at seeing her friend so joyful.
"What's going on? It's got to be good with the reaction I just saw." MJ inquired. Louise looked at MJ with a big smile on her face.
"So there is this guy I met a few years ago. He was in the military, visiting his family. Well, the thing is... we started dating and now he's back in New York. He got granted honorable discharge and he's a civilian now." Louise explained. Mary Jane playfully hit her shoulder with a smile.
"So does the soldier boy have a name?" Mary Jane asked. Louise nodded.
"His name is Eugene Thompson, but his friends called him 'Flash'." Louise replied. Mary Jane looked at Louise in shock.
"Is something wrong?" Louise asked.

Betty Brant was surprised when Peter invited his former high school bully to eat with him and her, but she couldn't help but he impressed by Peter's maturity. She was also surprised that Flash Thompson seemed to genuinely want to start a friendship with Peter, as the two former Midtown students were laughing about movies and tv shows they were watching lately.
"Say Peter, sorry to change the subject and all, but aren't you a photographer for the Daily Bugle these days?" Flash asked. Peter nodded.
"Yeah. Betty and I both work there." Peter replied. Flash sighed.
"Why would you work for a guy like Jameson? He keeps badmouthing Spider-Man even though the dude saved the city so many times. The guy is like a solider himself in a way, in a one man war against crime, making sure to protect civilians who can't fight the fight themselves. I couldn't work with a guy who can't see the good in heroes." Flash said. Peter nodded.
"I see where you're coming from. The reason I work for Jameson is because when I started off, he was the only newsman who would print my photos. Every other newspaper wanted to avoid hireing 'rookie photographers' and I just rose the ranks as time went on." Peter explained. Betty nodded.
"Even though Jameson pretends that he hates Peter's work, calling it crap when everyone else can tell he's lying out of his teeth when he says he hates the pictures. I never did like that about Jameson at all." Betty added. Flash shook his head.
"Yeah, well. I couldn't work for a guy like Jameson, but I suppose I can respect the fact that he was the only one who gave you a chance. And, Peter... thanks for giving me a chance. Again, I know I don't deserve one... especially after I tried fighting you for accidentally tossing a lunch tray at me that one day... but thanks." Flash replied.
"Yeah, well.... One can choose to let their past define them forever or they can move forward. I choose to move forward." Peter replied. Betty smiled as raised her cup like it was a glass.
"I think we should make a toast... to moving forward." Betty said. Peter and Flash brought their cups up and banged their cups with Betty's.
"To moving forward." Peter and Flash said.

Curt Connors was hard at work in Horizon Labs' Bio Lab 1. His lizard DNA research was looking very promising.
"Prehaps I can now move on to testing on amputated animals." Connors said to himself as he finished writing down his last bit of notes before he went to his computer, sat down in his chair, and started typing an email to Max Modell on his progress with lizard DNA. As Connors was typing he heard a knock on his door.
"Come in." said Connors. In walked Felicia Hardy.
"Hello, Dr. Connors. I've been looking for Peter Parker all day. Have you seen him?" Felicia asked. Connors shook his head.
"No. Today is his off day, Ms. Hardy. However I can call him and tell him that the Hardy Foundation wanted to see his project today." Curt said before Felicia waved him off.
"No, no. That's ok. This has nothing to do with the Hardy Foundation. Actually it's for another project, that I have had a personal interest in." Felicia explained. Connors looked at Felicia with curious eyes.
"May I ask what kind of project, Ms. Hardy?" Curt asked. Felicia smiled.
"It's just a study of Spider-Man. You see, Spider-Man is one of the few powered individuals that has appeared in this city, and I have always wanted to write a book detailing scientific reasons that Spider-Man may be able to do what he does. Since Peter Parker is one of the best photographers, able to get shots of Spider-Man most could only dream of; I thought prehaps Parker may be something on an expert in studying the webslinger." Felicia explained. Connors nodded.
"Ah, yeah. Spider-Man. He's always been a mysterious protector of New York, hasn't he? One of the most famous figures in the city, while also being one of the most hidden... as no one knows who he is." Curt said, having himself been fascinated by the webslinger. Felicia nodded and turned to the door of the lab.
"Well, thank you for your assistance, Dr. Connors. I'm sorry if I disturbed you." Felicia said.
"You haven't disturbed me at all, Ms. Hardy. You're welcome." Dr. Connors replied. Felicia then walked out of the lab.

Peter swung from building to building as Spider-Man with a smile on his face, as he thought about the fact that he had made a new friend in Flash Thompson of all people.
'If I had told myself that I'd be friends with my old high school bully back when I was in high school, I'd have never believed it.' Spider-Man thought as he swung. Spider-Man shot another web line and continued to swing across New York City. Spidey then swung by the jazz club Mary Jane used to work at before she made it back on into Broadway. Peter saw the place as a reminder of the man he never wanted to be again. The jerk that the symbiote had turned him into 2 years ago. As Spider-Man continued to swing, he decided to stop at his apartment very quick to pay his rent to Mr. Ditkovitch before he forgot.

When Spider-Man got to his apartment, he heard his new cell phone ring. After unmasking himself, closing the window and curtains and checking if his door was locked, Peter walked to his bed and answered the phone.

"Hello." Peter greeted.

"Hello, Mr. Parker, I have some things here that I believe Harry would want you to have." said the voice of Harry's former butler Bernard Houseman.

"I'll be on my way as soon as I finish paying my rent." Peter replied.

Wilson Fisk was at an art gallery, looking at supposed modern masterpieces. He did like most of the art he saw, and even agreed that some of the art in the gallery was indeed masterpieces, but there was a few pieces that he found overrated. However, there was one masterpiece that made everything else in the art gallery seem like cheap knock off art. She was beauty, she was grace. She was exotic in Fisk's eye. The woman seemed to notice that Fisk was looking at her and she smiled at him. Fisk walked to her as she looked at him, almost as if she were daring him to approach her, and she looked pleased to see that he indeed rose to the challenge.

"Hello, sir. How may I help you today?" The woman asked. Fisk smiled as he stopped in front of her and looked her in the eyes.

"I would like to experience this art through the eyes of someone other than myself. I'd hoped that maybe you could help me experience art through your eyes." Fisk told the woman.

"That is a bold request, sir. There is a certain level of intimacy involved in seeing art through the eyes another. Not many attempt to try to see art from the perspective of someone else, not even regulars, yet you ask for such a request in your first time here. You are bold. I can respect that. What is your name, sir?" The woman asked curiously.

"Wilson Fisk. My name is Wilson Fisk. And you are?" Fisk asked.

"Vanessa Marianna. Nice to meet you, Wilson." The woman, Vanessa, responded. Fisk reached his hand out to Vanessa and she took it to shake his hand. After they shook each other's hand, they released their hands and started to walk alongside each other.

Peter Parker hadn't been to the Osborn mansion since he had pleaded for Harry's help when Mary Jane was kidnapped by Venom. He sighed as he walked to the front door of the Oscorp mansion. It felt strange for him to be here, as if the ghost of his past would emerge from the walls of the mansion and haunt him. Norman Osborn probably would if he could. Peter rung the doorbell to the mansion and in what seemed like no time at all, Bernard opened the door. He was an elderly man, who had learned the secret of Norman Osborn after he had cleaned his wounds, it was a secret he had kept from Harry, something he had regretted keeping, but Peter had understood why Bernard kept the truth from Harry. Even if Peter hadn't promised Norman that he wouldn't tell Harry of his father's double life as a super villain, how would you tell a guy that his dad and role model was an insane psychopath that murdered Oscorp's board of directors?

"Hello, Peter. I'm glad to see you here." Bernard told Peter. Peter smiled, he always did like the old butler. He was always very kind back when Peter would visit back in high school, even though Peter wasn't rich or famous. Bernard wasn't vain, nor did he have an air of superiority. Bernard saw people for who they truly were.... Fellow people.

"I'm glad to be here." Peter replied, though that was only a half truth. He was happy to see Bernard, but he wasn't as pleased to be in a place that had become the source of a host of bad memories.

"Come with me, Peter." Bernard said as he opened the door further and walked into the house, motioning for Peter to follow him. As Peter walked behind Bernard, he saw pictures of the wall of Harry, Norman, him, and Bernard himself. Peter smiled at seeing some of the sillier pictures of him and Harry. Bernard looked behind him and saw Peter's reaction and smiled, in a comforting manner.

"I miss him too, Peter. I miss him too. But we can take comfort in the fact that he did not die a man bound by revenge, but rather that he died a man protecting his family. Even if that family was Spider-Man, it didn't matter because it was Peter Parker." Bernard said. Peter looked at Bernard in surprise.

"You knew?" Peter asked.

"I found out after you came to get Harry's help, 2 years ago. Harry told me, and I told him the truth, that Norman died by the blades of her s glider, not by the hand of Spider-Man." Bernard explained. Peter nodded, taking in the fact that there is now someone other than Mary Jane that knew his secret.

"You already know that Norman's goblin lab was here, behind that mirror. But I recently discovered another hidden lab Norman once used to create Goblin gear. I believe that Harry would rather have that technology used for good. Who better than, to use this leftover technology than his best friend." Bernard explained. Peter looked uncomfortable about the new idea of him flying on a goblin glider. His face made Bernard chuckle.

"I assure you... The tech that is here isn't the tech that you are thinking it is." Bernard said in amusement before he moved a book case, revealing a lab full of never finished gadgets.

"Lab behind a bookcase.... Kinda cliché, don't you think." Peter asked. Bernard laughed.

"That's what I said when I found this lab too." Bernard replied. Peter looked around the lab. Nothing in the room was completed. Peter smiled.

"Ever since I got employed at Horizon Labs, I did want to try building some tech for Spider-Man. Like I had this spider tracer idea in my head for a while." Peter told Bernard, looking at the elderly man with excitement at what he could create.

"Then you should get right to it. Good luck, Peter." Bernard said with a smile, proud of the man who was Harry's best friend.

Ain't that a kick in the Head starts to play:
Peter started to grab a few part and started to mess with some wiring.
Some time later, Peter was messing with a green light and he wrote some notes on a board. He then found a different light and replaced the bulb. The light turned red, and Peter smiled as an idea flashed in his mind.
Sometime later, Peter then was making a few small spider shaped devices. They were red and they matched the spider emblem on the back on his costume.

(This was the shape they had)
Peter smiled, excitedly, as if he were a kid in a candy store.
Some time later, Peter finished some last details on the light that he made. Out popped the Spider-Man mask logo. The Spider Signal and Spider tracers were complete.
"Now to make a receiver for the tracers, and a belt to go under the costume where the costume top and bottom have can disconnect, so I can hold the signal and tracers." Peter said.
Music and gadget making montage ends.

Peter's phone rang, getting Peter's attention. He looked at it and saw that it was Mary Jane calling. He quickly picked it up.
"MJ, hey." Peter said.

"Peter. Did you hear that Flash is back in New York?" MJ asked.

"Yeah. I know. I saw him earlier today. We became friends, if you can believe it. He changed a lot since he went to the Army." Peter replied. MJ sighed in relief.

"So he did go to the Army. He did change. Good. I'd hate for my friend Louise to be played by my old high school ex-boyfriend." MJ said, clearly relieved.

"Yeah. He's different now. Really different." Peter replied.

"Yeah, well... Louise wants to throw him a welcome back to the USA party tomorrow, and she wants me to help out." MJ informed him.

"I'll be happy to pitch in too. Uncle Ben always told me to treat our veterans with respect. I just happen to know one. It's the least I can do for his years in the service." Peter replied. Mary Jane found herself intrigued by this. She didn't know Ben Parker was so supportive of the troops.

"I didn't know your uncle supported the troops so much." MJ said.

"Yeah well. My Dad, his brother, was in the Marines. He died out there.... in a plane crash with my Mom after he retired from service. I didn't know until last year when Aunt May told me. My mom was a FBI agent" Peter informed her. [SHIELD didn't exist in Raimiverse, and the Oscorp scientist thing has been done by TASM.~ Sage]

"Wow. Well, it seems heroism really does run in your family. They'd be proud of you. And one more thing.... Semper Fi, Peter." Mary Jane said, smiling, not that Peter could tell, since she was at Louise's house, and he was at the Osborn Mansion.

"Thanks, MJ." Peter replied with his own smile and he pulled a locket out of his pocket. In the locket was the only pictures of his parents that Peter owned. Richard Parker in his Marine uniform and a smiling Mary Parker. He was proud of the people his parents were, but also eternally grateful for the love his Uncle Ben showed him, raising the son of his brother. Sure, he didn't have his birth parents, but he did have a loving adopted father and mother. Ben Parker and May Parker.
"After I finish up here, I'm paying Aunt May a visit." Peter told himself as he put the locket May gave him of his parents back in his pocket.
